Overview

Vivint Smart Lighting is a smart home indoor lighting solution comprised of three components: smart switches (including mounting bracket and cover plate), bridges, and light bulbs. It can be installed as a standalone solution or integrated with an existing Vivint Smart Home system for remote lighting control via the panel/hub or mobile app. The system allows for professional or DIY installation. Users connect the bridge device to their local network router, configure groups of lights, install smart light bulbs, and replace existing light switches with the corresponding smart switches.

Vivint Smart Lighting switches are compatible with both toggle and rocker style light switches and fit single (1) gang, double (2) gang, and triple (3) gang configurations. While setup procedures are similar for all smart switch types, this document uses the single-gang toggle smart switch for switch-specific installation tasks.

Key features include remote control for turning lights on/off and dimming from 0% to 100%. Lights can be configured individually or in groups. An LED light on the switch plate indicates status and provides visual feedback during the pairing process. Smart switches do not require an electrical connection and can be installed on any wall surface.

This document provides a product description, illustrations, installation instructions, basic operation/user functionality, technical specifications, standards listings, and regulatory compliance references.

Smart Switch Plates for Both Toggle and Rocker Style Switches (1, 2, 3 Gang)

Vivint Smart Lighting offers switch plates compatible with toggle and rocker switch styles, available for 1, 2, and 3 gang installations. The switch plates (covers) are the same for both toggle and rocker switches. Illustrations show the three gang sizes, as well as side and bottom views of a single switch.

Diagram Description: Illustrations depict single-gang, double-gang, and triple-gang switch plate configurations. A side view shows the profile of a single switch, and a bottom view details its physical characteristics.

Installation Instructions

Installing and setting up the Vivint Smart Lighting solution is a straightforward, multi-step procedure. Setup involves three main tasks. Both professional installers and homeowners should read all steps carefully for successful installation and optimal performance. Switch-specific steps and images in this guide use the single-gang toggle smart switch. For additional information, refer to the Field Service Pros website.

Main Setup Tasks Outline

  1. Bridge: Connect and pair the bridge to the network/system.
  2. Group: Select or create a "group" to which smart light bulbs can be added.
  3. Switch: Install the smart switch to control the group of lights.

Task 1: To connect and pair the bridge to the network/system:

  1. At the panel, navigate to Smart Home Devices > Zigbee Devices > Zigbee Bridge.
  2. Connect the bridge to the local network router using the provided Ethernet cable.
  3. Power the bridge by plugging the power supply into a wall outlet and connecting it to the bridge via USB-C.
  4. Press the Pair button on the bottom of the bridge.
  5. At the panel, select the "Pair Bridge" button. This process may take a few minutes.
  6. Once the bridge is paired, configure groups for smart light bulbs and set up a smart switch to control them. Select the "Set Up Lighting" button.

Bridge Diagram Description:

Task 2: To select or create a group and add light bulbs:

IMPORTANT: Light bulbs must be added to a "group," even if that group contains only one bulb.

  1. At the panel (after tapping "Set Up Lighting"), select the desired group or enter a name to create a new custom group. Then select "Set Up Bulbs."
  2. Replace existing bulbs with supported smart bulbs and power them on.
  3. At the panel, scan for the bulbs or enter their serial numbers manually. This may take a few minutes.
  4. Once discovered, the bulbs are added to the group. Select "Save and Continue."
  5. To configure another group, repeat the steps above. Select the "Add New Vivint Switch" button to set up a smart switch for the current group.

Task 3: To install the smart switch (cover plates and mounting bracket) to control the group of lights:

NOTE: There are no mounting wall surface restrictions for smart switches. Since no electrical connection is required, switches can be added to any room, with or without an electrical box.

IMPORTANT: Ensure the appropriate circuit breaker is turned OFF before installing the smart switch.

  1. At the light switch location, remove the old cover plate (save the screws). Secure the corresponding mounting bracket (toggle or rocker; 1, 2, or 3 gang) using the 2 screws.
  2. CAUTION: If the old cover plate or switch shows evidence of arcing or burn marks, reinstall the cover plate and contact a qualified electrician to replace the existing switch before installing the Vivint Smart Lighting smart switch.
  3. At the panel (after tapping "Add New Vivint Switch"), prepare the smart switch by pairing it to the network/system. Remove the battery pull tab. The LED light will blink green, indicating power and bootup. Press the PAIR button (or any other button) to scan for the network; the LED will breathe green.
  4. (NOTE: If the network is not found after 1 minute, the search stops, and the LED blinks green again. Repeat the pairing process. To reset the switch, press and hold the button for 15 seconds.) Once successfully paired, the LED will illuminate solid green for 3 seconds. A failed pairing will illuminate solid red for 3 seconds.
  5. For double- and triple-gang switch plates, configure each switch for its specific group of lights by following the on-screen prompts.
  6. Once the new smart switch is paired and associated with a group, it is fully set up. Attach the smart switch cover plate to the mounting bracket. Select "Save & Complete."
  7. IMPORTANT: Turn the in-wall light switch to the ON position before proceeding.
  8. Attach the corresponding smart switch onto the mounting bracket. Slide the lock button on the bottom of the bracket to the right to unlock. Insert the top of the switch plate into the top of the bracket and tilt downward until it snaps firmly in place. Slide the lock button to the left to secure the switch cover plate.
  9. To set up more smart switches, repeat the steps above.
  10. From the panel Home screen, tap the light bulb icon in the navigation bar to control your smart lighting. Lights can also be controlled via the mobile app. Refer to "Operation Overview" for features and additional help resources.

Troubleshooting Tips

If a smart switch is offline, try these steps:

Battery Installation

The battery should last 3-5 years under normal use. A low battery notification will appear on the panel. IMPORTANT: Replacement batteries must be UL Recognized.

To replace the battery:

*The battery may fit loosely in the slot, but the cover will secure it firmly in place.

⚠️ WARNING! The polarity of the battery must be observed (as shown in the image). Improper handling of lithium batteries may result in heat generation, explosion, or fire, which may lead to personal injury. Replace only with the same or equivalent battery type as recommended by the manufacturer.

AVERTISSEMENT!

Batteries must not be recharged, disassembled, or disposed of in fire. Disposal of used batteries must be made in accordance with waste recovery and recycling regulations. Keep away from small children. If batteries are swallowed, promptly see a doctor.
