1. Important Safety Instructions
- Read and understand all safety and operating instructions before the radio is operated.
- Retain instructions for future reference.
- Heed all warnings on the appliance and in the instructions.
- Follow all operations and use instructions.
- Do not use the appliance near water.
- Unplug the radio from the AC power outlet before cleaning. Use only a damp cloth for cleaning the exterior.
- Do not place the radio on an unstable cart, stand, bracket, or table.
- Ensure proper ventilation around the radio. Do not block ventilation openings.
- Operate only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label.
- Position the mains adaptor so it is not walked on or pinched. Unplug by gripping the adaptor, not the wire.
- Do not overload wall outlets or extension cords. Never insert objects of any kind into the radio through openings.
- If the radio is left unattended or unused for long periods, unplug it from the wall outlet to prevent damage from lightning or power line surges.
- If the radio is left unattended and used for a long period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
- Do not attempt to service the receiver yourself. Refer all servicing to authorized service personnel.
- Never push objects of any kind into this radio through openings, as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts. Never spill liquid of any kind into the product.
- The appliance should be serviced by qualified service personnel when: the power supply cord or plug is damaged; objects have fallen or liquid has been spilled into the radio; the radio has been exposed to rain or water; the radio does not operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; the radio has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.
- To prevent possible hearing damage, do not listen at high volume levels for long periods.
- CAUTION: Maintain minimum distances around the apparatus for sufficient ventilation. Do not impede ventilation by covering openings. Keep naked flame sources away. Draw attention to environmental aspects of battery disposal. Suitable for tropical and/or moderate climates.
- Warning: Batteries shall not be exposed to excessive heat such as sunshine or fire.
- The mains plug of the power adapter is used as the disconnect device; the power outlet must be installed near the equipment and be easily accessible.
Important information on charging and using rechargeable batteries
- Recharge batteries at least every 2 months.
- Ensure the Battery Select switch is set to "NiMH" for rechargeable batteries.
- Insert batteries with correct polarity (+ and -).
- For first use, charge new batteries continuously until full. This may take longer than normal.
- New batteries reach full capacity after several charge and discharge cycles.
- Leave the complete group of batteries in place; do not mix batteries of different charge levels.
- Charge batteries at room temperatures between 5°C – 35°C.
- Charging time can take several hours, up to 6 hours or more.
- Do not charge batteries when the radio is hot or exposed to heat sources.
- Clean battery contacts periodically with a contact spray.
- Do not use a mix of old and new, rechargeable and non-rechargeable, or full and empty batteries.
- Do not use batteries with different mAh capacity.
- Do not use damaged, deformed, or leaking batteries.
- Battery level indication is approximate.
- Batteries can become hot during charging.
- Battery capacity is lower in cold conditions.
- Batteries are consumables and do not fall under the warranty.
- Do not dispose of batteries by incineration or with household waste. Take disposable batteries to a suitable recycling center.
- CAUTION: Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced by an incorrect type.
- Warning: Avoid replacing the battery with an incorrect type.
- Do not dispose of batteries into fire or a hot oven, or by crushing or cutting.
- Do not leave batteries in extremely high temperature environments.
- Avoid subjecting batteries to extremely low air pressure.
- Symbols explained: Energy efficiency marking, polarity of DC power connector, AC voltage, DC voltage, class II equipment, For indoor use only.
2. Introduction
Overview of the main unit
- 1 Mode button: Press repeatedly to select the desired mode.
- 2 LCD display
- 3 Info button: Press to cycle through information from the playback source on the radio's display.
- 4 Menu button: Press to open the menu for the current mode. Press again to go back to the main menu or close the menu.
- 5 Back button: While in the radio's menu, press to go back one step.
- 6 Forward button: While in the radio's menu, press to go forward one step or confirm. Press to scan for FM stations.
- 7 Power button: Press to switch the radio on/off.
- 8 Battery indicator
- 9 Tuning / Select / Seek knob: Rotate to adjust frequency (FM), scan for stations, or select/confirm menu items.
- 10 Volume +/- button: Press to increase/decrease volume.
- 11 Mute button: Press to enable/disable mute.
- 12 Preset 5 / Next / Fast Forward button: Select Preset 5, save Preset 5, go to next track, or fast forward.
- 13 Preset 4 / Play / Pause button: Select Preset 4, save Preset 4, or play/pause track.
- 14 Preset 3 / Previous / Rewind button: Select Preset 3, save Preset 3, go to previous track, or rewind.

- 18 DAB / FM antenna: Position and stretch out for better reception.
- 19 Aux in socket: 3.5mm socket for audio input from external device.
- 20 Line out socket: 3.5mm socket for audio output to external device.
- 21 Headphones socket: 3.5mm socket for connecting a pair of headphones.
- 22 DC IN socket: Connect the radio's adapter to this port to power the radio using the mains.
- 23 Battery switch (NiMH / Alkaline): Use this switch to configure what type of batteries you are using.
- 24 Battery compartment: Requires 4 x D size (AM-1) batteries.
- 25 Battery compartment cover: Remove by sliding down; replace by sliding back up.
3. Getting Started
Finding a suitable location for the radio
- Place the radio on a flat, even surface.
- Do not place the radio near heat sources.
- Ensure sufficient space around the radio for proper ventilation.
- If connecting to Wi-Fi, place in a location with good Wi-Fi reception.
- Avoid placing near appliances that can interfere with Wi-Fi reception, such as microwaves.
Powering the radio
The WFR-28BT can be powered using the power adapter or by using 4 x D size batteries.
Battery operation
- Open the battery compartment cover by pushing it down.
- Ensure the battery switch inside the compartment is set to the correct position (Alkaline or NiMH).
- Insert 4 x D size batteries with correct polarity as shown inside the compartment.
- Close the battery compartment cover by pushing it back into place.
Note: Reduced power, distortion, or a "stuttering sound", or a red battery indicator are signs that batteries need replacement or recharging.
AC operation
Before connecting the power adapter, ensure the wall socket voltage is within the supported range (100-240V ~ 50/60 Hz). Connect the adapter to the radio first, then plug it into the wall socket.
Charging the batteries
Use rechargeable NiMH batteries and ensure the battery switch is set to NiMH. After inserting batteries, connect the radio to a wall socket. The battery indicator blinks green while charging and is solid green when fully charged. Fully charging takes approximately 6 hours, but may vary by battery capacity. The battery indicator turns red and the display shows "Low Battery" when batteries are low. A blinking red indicator signifies a charging error. In Standby mode, a white battery icon with a red "X" indicates a faulty battery.
Performing the radio's initial setup
Upon first power-up, the radio automatically starts the Setup Wizard, guiding you through configuring time format, time/date updates, and network connection.
- Select [Yes] or [No] to start the Setup Wizard.
- Choose the desired hour format (12/24 hour).
- Select the auto update method for time and date: [Update from DAB], [Update from FM], [Update from Network], or [No update].
- If [Update from Network] is selected, set the timezone and Daylight Savings Time (DST) preference ([Yes] or [No]).
- Choose whether to keep the radio connected to the network ([Yes] or [No]).
- The Network Wizard scans for Wi-Fi networks. Select your network name.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted.
A Wi-Fi signal strength icon will appear in the display upon successful connection.
4. Controlling the radio using the UNDOK app
The WFR-28BT can be controlled from a smart device using the UNDOK app, which offers an intuitive interface and allows configuration of many settings. The app is available for Android and iOS.
Using the UNDOK app to control the radio
- Download and install the UNDOK app from your device's app store.
- Ensure the radio and your smart device are connected to the same network.
- Open the UNDOK app. Your WFR-28BT should appear on the home screen.
- Connect to the radio by tapping on it.
- Use the "Source" tab to select the radio's playback source and the "Browse" tab to explore content.
- Playback, tuning, and volume can be controlled using the controls in the app.
Configuring the radio's settings using the UNDOK app
- Start the UNDOK app and connect to the radio.
- Tap the three dots icon in the upper right corner and select "Sangean WFR-28BT xxxxxx Settings".
- The radio's settings will appear on the smart device's screen. Tap any setting to configure it.
5. Listening to Internet radio
The WFR-28BT can receive thousands of internet stations via Wi-Fi.
To listen to Internet radio:
- Turn on the radio and select the Internet radio mode.
- If it's the first time, the station selection menu appears. Choose a station by [Your country], [Search], [Location], [Popular], or [Discover].

Press the Menu button in Internet radio mode. Options include: [Last listened], [Station list], [System settings], [Main menu].
Storing Internet radio stations as presets
Store up to 5 stations or Podcasts as presets. Tune to a station, then press and hold one of the Preset buttons (1-5). A "Preset stored" message confirms storage.
Recalling Internet radio station presets
In Internet radio mode, press one of the Preset buttons (1-5) to recall the stored station.
Customizing your preset list using a web browser
Connect your PC and radio to the same Wi-Fi network. Find the radio's IP address via Windows Explorer ([Network] -> right-click WFR-28BT -> [Properties]). Open your internet browser, enter the IP address as the URL. Use the web interface to manage presets by clicking the [Presets] tab, then [Edit] for a specific preset to change its name and URL, or [Delete] to remove it.

Repeatedly press the Info button to cycle through Artist & track name, Slogan & Description of station, Language & Location, Bit rate, Codec & Sampling rate, Playback buffer, and Today's date.
6. Listening to Podcasts
The WFR-28BT can tune into various Podcasts from around the world.
To listen to Podcasts:
- Turn on the radio and select the Podcast mode.
- Choose a podcast from the selection menu: by [Your country], [Search], [Location], or [Discover].
- Playback controls: Press Play/Pause to pause/resume. Press Next/Previous for episodes. Press and hold Next/Previous to fast forward/rewind within an episode.

The Podcast menu is similar to the Internet radio menu but includes a [Podcast list] option instead of [Station list].

Repeatedly press the Info button to cycle through Track progress bar, Track name, Track description, Artist, Album, Bit rate, Codec & Sampling rate, Playback buffer, and Today's date.
7. Listening to Spotify
Use your phone, tablet, or computer as a remote control for Spotify. Visit spotify.com/connect to learn how.
8. Listening to DAB radio
Tuning into DAB stations
- Turn on the radio and select the DAB radio mode.
- On first use, the radio automatically performs a full scan for available DAB stations.
- Use the Tuning knob to scroll through the list of found stations and press to tune into a station.
Note: Ensure the DAB/FM antenna is fully stretched out and positioned upright before scanning.

Press the Menu button in DAB radio mode. Options include: [Station list], [Scan], [Manual tune], [Prune invalid], [DRC] (Dynamic Range Control), [Station order] (Alphanumeric or Ensemble), [System settings], [Main menu].

Repeatedly press the Info button to cycle through Text, Program type, Multiplex name & Frequency, Signal error & Strength, Bit rate, Codec & Audio type, and Today's date.
Storing preset stations in the DAB radio mode
The WFR-28BT has 5 memory presets for DAB radio. Tune to a station, then press and hold one of the Preset buttons (1-5) to store it.
Recalling a preset station in the DAB radio mode
In DAB radio mode, press one of the Preset buttons (1-5) to recall the corresponding preset station.
9. Listening to FM radio
Tuning into FM stations
- Turn on the radio and select the FM radio mode.
- Rotate the Tuning knob clockwise or anti-clockwise. Press the Tuning knob or Forward button to automatically tune into an FM station with a higher or lower frequency. The radio stops when it finds a station of sufficient strength.
- Fine-tune the frequency using the Tuning knob in steps of 0.05MHz.
Note: Ensure the DAB/FM antenna is fully stretched out and positioned upright before tuning.

Press the Menu button in FM radio mode. Options include: [Scan setting] (for signal strength preference), [Audio setting] (force mono playback), [System settings], [Main menu].

Repeatedly press the Info button to cycle through Text message, Program type, Frequency, and Today's Date. An RDS icon indicates RDS data is available, showing the radio station name.
Storing and recalling preset stations in the FM radio mode
The procedure for storing and recalling FM presets is identical to that for DAB radio mode (up to 5 presets).
10. Listening to Bluetooth audio
Pairing your Bluetooth device for the first time
- Turn on the radio and select the Bluetooth mode. The display shows "No connect".
- Activate Bluetooth on your Bluetooth device.
- On your device, select "WFR-28BT" from the Bluetooth list. (Enter passcode "0000" if prompted).
- A confirmation tone indicates successful pairing. You can now play music from your device through the radio.
Notes: Effective range is approximately 10 meters (30 feet). Connectivity performance may vary by device. Some mobile phone activities may mute or disconnect Bluetooth audio.
Audio playback in the Bluetooth mode
Playback status is shown on the display. Volume can be adjusted on the radio or the connected device. Playback can be controlled using the radio's controls: Play/Pause, Next/Previous track, Fast Forward/Rewind.

The WFR-28BT memorizes up to 8 paired devices and attempts to reconnect automatically with the last connected device.

Press the Menu button in Bluetooth mode. Options include: [Forget devices] (to clear paired list), [System settings], [Main menu].
Disconnecting your Bluetooth device
Turn off Bluetooth on the device, press and hold Preset 2 to enter pairing mode, or switch to another radio mode.

11. The Aux in, Line out and headphones sockets
Listening to audio from an external device using the Aux in socket
Connect an external device (e.g., iPod, MP3 player) to the Aux in socket using a 3.5mm audio cable. Select the AUX In mode. Playback is controlled on the external device; volume can be controlled on both the radio and the external device.
Output audio to an external device using the Line out socket
Connect the radio's Line out socket to an external device's audio input using a 3.5mm audio cable. Select the corresponding mode on the external device. Audio played on the radio will be heard through the external device. Playback is controlled on the radio; volume on the external device.
Connecting a pair of headphones to the radio
Connect headphones with a 3.5mm jack to the Headphones socket. The radio's speaker will be muted. Important: Excessive sound pressure from earphones and headphones can cause hearing loss. Do not listen at high volume levels for long periods.
12. Using the System settings menu
Access the System settings menu via the Menu button.
Options include:
- [Backlight]: Configure backlight timeout or brightness level.
- [Equaliser]: Select EQ modes (Flat, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classic, News, Movie, My EQ) or set a custom profile.
- [Network]: Run network wizard, configure network connection, view/select network profiles, or clear network settings.
- [Time / Date]: Set time/date manually, set auto-update source, set time format (12/24 hour). If Network update is used, options for [Set timezone] and [Daylight savings] are available.
- [Inactive Standby]: Configure the time after which the radio automatically switches to Standby mode when not in use.
- [Language]: Configure the language for the radio's menus.
- [Factory reset]: Reset the radio to default factory settings, erasing user settings and presets.
- [Software update]: Configure whether the radio should check for available software updates.
- [Setup wizard]: Perform the Setup wizard again.
- [Info]: View the radio's Spotify version, Radio ID, and Friendly Name.
Manually setting the time and date
Navigate to System settings -> [Time / Date] -> [Set Time / Date]. Use the Tuning knob to select and confirm the current day, month, year, hour, and minute.
