2.3 Important Notes
WARNING: Improper installation of gas appliances and hoods can create a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure gas appliance is installed correctly and hood is vented outdoors.
- Gas cooking appliances release carbon monoxide. Vent exhaust gases outside only.
- Hood installation height varies. Consult appliance manual or combination matrix.
NOTICE: Hood can be damaged by excessive heat if operated with multiple burners at high settings under a hood installed at minimum clearances and turned off.
3. Installation Requirements and Clearances
3.1 Appliance Dimensions
Diagrams show dimensions for DUH80553/DUH86553 and DUHP0553/DUHP6553 models, including width, depth, and height measurements in inches and millimeters. The hood must be centered over the cooking surface.
3.2 Safety Clearances
WARNING: Grease deposits can catch fire. Observe safety distances.
- Minimum 24" (610 mm) above electric cooktops.
- Minimum 30" (760 mm) above gas cooktops.
- If using both gas and electric, use the larger distance.
3.3 Appliance Weight
Ensure cabinet supports the weight.
Model | Weight |
---|---|
DUH80553UC | 42 lbs (19 kg) |
DUH86553UC | 45 lbs (20.5 kg) |
DUHP0853UC | 51 lbs (23.2 kg) |
DUHP6853UC | 54 lbs (24.5 kg) |
3.4 Electrical Requirements
WARNING: Appliance must be properly grounded.
- Requires a 120V AC, 60Hz, 15A branch circuit.
- Connect only to a dedicated, grounded circuit installed per regulations.
- Check local building codes. Install per local codes, NEC, or CEC.
4. Preparing the Installation
4.1 Ductwork Preparation
Appliance may be vented vertically. Proper performance depends on ducting. Local codes may require make-up air systems.
- DO NOT USE FLEXIBLE DUCT; it causes back pressure and reduces performance.
- Always install a metal vent cover where ductwork exits the house.
- For COLD WEATHER installations, use an additional backdraft damper and nonmetallic thermal break.
- MAKE-UP AIR: Local codes may require make-up air systems for high-CFM ventilation. Owner/installer must determine requirements.
- Vent exhaust air outside. Do not vent into walls, ceilings, attics, crawl spaces, or garages.
- Keep duct runs short and straight. Elbows and transitions reduce efficiency.
Diagram shows ductwork components: 1. Roof cap, 2. Soffit, 3. Cabinet, 4. Hood, 5. Distance above cooking surface (min. 24" electric, min. 30" gas), 6. Vertical discharge, 7. House wiring.
Installing the Ductwork
Follow these instructions for ducted installations:
- Connect hood with an 8" round duct plate for vertical discharge.
- Determine duct path between hood and outdoors. Shortest, straightest route is best. Avoid ducts smaller than recommended. Insulation can reduce energy loss. Connecting to existing ducts may reduce airflow.
- Install a wall or roof cap (sold separately), ensuring no leaks.
- Connect metal ductwork to the cap and work towards the hood. Use 2" metal foil duct tape to seal joints.
Recommended Maximum Duct Length
Follow these recommendations for 80% exhaust efficiency:
8" round duct vertical discharge | Roof or wall cap with damper | Elbow(s) 90° and/or 45° (Standard elbows with 1" internal radius) |
---|---|---|
Maximum duct length | 1 | 0 |
92 ft. | 1 | 1 |
78 ft. | 1 | 2 |
62 ft. | 1 |
4.2 Preparing the Appliance
- Remove all packaging and protective film.
- Remove grease filters. Open latch, push filter down, tilt out.
- Remove wire covers. Remove screw where pieces meet, remove cover from sloped part, remove 4 screws from remaining cover and lift off.
- Remove electrical power cable knockout. Install appropriate ½" strain relief (not included).
Diagram shows removing filters and wire covers. Another diagram shows removing electrical knockout and installing strain relief.
Installing the round duct plate: Install over rectangular opening at top of hood using 2 screws. Can be installed up to ½" off center for off-center ductwork. Insert duct and seal with aluminum foil tape.
5. Installation Instructions
Observe this information when installing.
WARNING: Turn power OFF at service panel before installing. Lock panel to prevent accidental power ON.
5.1 Kitchen Cabinet Types
Identify cabinet type (Framed or Frameless) before installation. Check bottom of cabinet.
Diagrams illustrate framed and frameless cabinets.
5.2 Preparing the Hood Location
- Use diagram for ductwork and electrical cutout placement.
- Partially install four (4) mounting screws into shims or cabinet.
Diagram shows installation dimensions (A-M) for 8" round vertical ducting, including hood mounting screw locations, cabinet front/bottom, duct access hole, and electrical access hole.
5.3 Installing the Hood
- Run house power cable to hood location through strain relief.
- Hang hood on mounting screws. Slide back until screw heads engage slots. Tighten screws.
- Attach power cable using strain relief.
- Connect ductwork using metal foil tape for airtight joints. Ensure damper or duct plate enters ductwork and operates freely.
Diagram shows hanging the hood on screws.
5.4 Electrical Wire Connection
WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Wiring must be done by qualified personnel per codes. Turn power OFF at service panel and lock it before installation.
- Connect house power cable to hood wiring: BLACK to BLACK, WHITE to WHITE, GREEN or bare wire to GREEN ground screw.
- Reinstall wire covers.
Diagram shows wiring connections (motor ground wire, ground screw, house power cable) and reinstallation of wire covers.
6. Installer Checklist
Final Check
