ZEISS Smartzoom 5: Your Digital Light Microscope for Guided Inspection

As Simple as it Gets.

Smart Design. Smart Workflow. Smart Connectivity.

Digitalization enables automation in industry and elsewhere, including light microscopy. The ZEISS Smartzoom 5 is a turnkey automated microscopy platform with embedded software solutions that addresses classic limitations of light microscopy, such as depth of field or reflections from metallic surfaces. It assists operators with consistent execution of routine microscopy tasks and is well-connected to the digital world, linking to other instruments, laboratories, and locations.

Smartzoom 5 is the ideal solution for quality assurance applications across virtually every field of industry. It is quick and easy to set up, fully automated, and workflow-guided, making it simple to operate and enabling novice users to produce excellent results.

Simpler. More Intelligent. More Integrated.

Smart Design

The integrated optical module, including the zoom engine, overview camera, co-axial lighting, and encoded objective bayonet adapter, connects with a single cable to the integrated stand. The stand contains the motorized stage and encoded tilt arm, and connects to the operating system via a single USB3 cable. The operating system allows microscope control via the touch screen monitor, touchpad, dual-knob controller, mouse, and keyboard, accommodating users who adapt to digitalization and automation at different paces.

Smart Workflow

Navigate your part or sample easily using the overview image from the optical module's integrated camera. Set up the microscope with the workflow-guided graphical user interface. Capture imaging and measurement workflows on one or multiple components using the job builder in the Smartzoom 5 software. These smart workflow features reduce operational complexity, enabling quality engineers to execute inspection routines with unprecedented repeatability and without requiring deep microscopy knowledge.

Smart Connectivity

Digitalization connects microscopy data with data from other modalities, sharing combined information between operators, laboratories, and locations. Smartzoom 5, with ZEN core, the ZEISS connected laboratory software infrastructure, is a key component of the ZEISS connected industrial microscopy portfolio for multi-modal industrial quality assurance and failure analysis applications.

Extended Depth of Field and Glare Removal

Extended Depth of Field

Smartzoom 5 provides a workflow-guided software routine for automated acquisition of images at different focus planes, followed by image reconstruction with extended depth of field, or 3D surface reconstruction. Telecentric objectives minimize distortions in the Z direction. Images with extended depth of field, or 3D surface projections, can be saved directly, measured in a 2D profile, or imported into ConfoMap for subsequent 3D surface analysis.

Glare Removal

The Smartzoom 5 objectives feature integrated segmented LED ring lighting, offering an alternative to using a polarization filter to suppress glare from reflective surfaces. Images illuminated by different sectors of the segmented ring light are automatically combined by the software to filter out glare. Segmented ring light illumination can be combined with co-axial lighting for all objectives. Digital glare removal offers consistent application, unlike polarization filters that may be applied in different directions.

Workflow-guided User Interface

Smartzoom 5 features an exceptionally user-friendly graphical interface, logically ordered for capturing overview images, automated height adjustment, autofocus, selecting the best image, acquiring images with extended depth of field or 3D images, and generating reports. The interface supports easy sample navigation and allows users to locate or change microscopic regions of interest. Inspection workflows are recorded and displayed clearly, with the ability to save workflows as jobs for operators with limited microscopy knowledge.

Automation through encoding ensures that all Smartzoom 5 components are monitored, with their status stored alongside imaging data. A user management system ensures reproducibility by restricting operator adjustments.

Repeatable Workflows

Digitalization and automation benefit engineers in industrial quality laboratories who need to perform quality inspection consistently, without operational variations. Smartzoom objectives are telecentric to mitigate risks of incorrect image scaling. Automated illumination features like Best Image and Glare Removal enable inexperienced operators to select and apply lighting settings consistently. Job Mode allows for repeatable optical inspection and workflow execution, with predefined regions of interest, magnification, lighting, data acquisition, and reporting settings.

Smartzoom objectives 1.6x, 5x and 10x are telecentric to mitigate risks of incorrect image scaling when a sample or part is not imaged at the exactly prescribed working distance. A standard, non-telecentric lens results in a distortion of perspectives (left). A telecentric lens ensures that the perspectives remain undistorted (right).

Automated illumination features such as Best Image and Glare Removal enable inexperienced operators to select and apply preferred lighting settings consistently.

Smartzoom objectives 0.5x, 1.6x and 5x are of sufficiently long working distance to enable tilting of the arm throughout the -45 to +45 degree tilt range, without risk of crashing the edge of the objective into large components, for example PCBs.

Job Mode is a form of macro recording that reduces the complexity of a microscopy workflow to a step-by-step execution of inspection and measurement tasks. With predefined regions of interest, magnification, lighting, data acquisition and reporting settings-all arranged in a logical and consistent workflow order job templates then can be applied to multiple similar parts in a production batch.
