Wiring

Caution: Electrical Hazard
Failure to disconnect the power before beginning to install this product can cause electrical shock or equipment damage.

Warning: All components of the control system and the thermostat installation must conform to Class II circuits per the NEC Code.

Wiring Steps

  1. If replacing a thermostat, note the terminal connections on the thermostat being replaced. Wiring may not be color-coded; for example, the green wire might not connect to the G terminal.
  2. Loosen the terminal block screws. Insert wires, then retighten the terminal block screws.

Installation Tip: Do not overtighten terminal block screws, as this can damage the terminal block. A damaged terminal block can prevent the thermostat from fitting correctly on the subbase or cause system operation issues. Maximum Torque: 6 in/lbs.

Terminal Designations

The terminals on the thermostat wallplate are wired according to the HVAC system type and thermostat configuration.

Note: Devices like float switches that mechanically break circuits should be installed to break the control wire (Y), not the power (R). Interrupting the power circuit will shut off power to the thermostat and prevent operation.

Wiring Tips

Wire Specifications

Use shielded or non-shielded 18-22 gauge thermostat wire.

Note: In many heat pump systems without an emergency heat relay, a jumper can be installed between E and W2 to enable single-stage Emergency Heat Operation.

Wiring Diagrams

Typical 2H/2C System: 1 Transformer

This diagram illustrates the wiring for a typical 2-stage heat, 2-stage cool system using a single transformer. It shows connections from the thermostat terminals (RC, RH, Y, C, W/E, G, W2, Y2) to various relays (Compressor Relay, Heat Relay, Fan Relay, Heat Relay 2, Compressor Relay 2) and the power supply (R, C, L1, L2).

Typical Cool-Only System With Fan

This diagram shows the wiring for a cool-only HVAC system with fan control. It details connections from thermostat terminals (RC, RH, Y, C, W/E, G) to Compressor Relay and Fan Relay, powered by R, C, L1, L2.

Typical Heat Only System With Fan

This diagram illustrates the wiring for a heat-only HVAC system with fan control. It shows connections from thermostat terminals (RC, RH, Y, C, W/E, G) to Heat Relay and Fan Relay, powered by R, C, L1, L2. A note indicates that a jumper can be installed between E and W2 in systems without an emergency heat relay.

Typical 3H/2C or 2H/1C Heat Pump System

This diagram depicts wiring for heat pump systems with up to 3 stages of heat and 2 stages of cool, or 2 stages of heat and 1 stage of cool. It includes connections for Compressor Relay, Emergency Heat Relay, Fan Relay, Auxiliary Heat Relay, Compressor Relay 2, Cool Reversing Valve, Heat Reversing Valve, and power supply.

Typical 2H/2C System: 2 Transformers

This diagram shows wiring for a 2-stage heat, 2-stage cool system utilizing two transformers. It includes connections for Compressor Relay, Fan Relay, Compressor Relay 2, Heat Relay, Heat Relay 2, and power supply. An instruction to "REMOVE JUMPER" is present.

Programming

Differential or Swing Setting Tip

The second stage activates at 2x the differential setting and deactivates at 1x the differential. For example, with a 0.5° differential and a 70°F setpoint for heating: first stage turns on around 69.5°F, second stage around 69°F. Second stage turns off at 69.5°F, first stage at 70.5°F. A third stage would turn on at 68.5°F and off at 69°F.

Keypad Lockout

To lock or unlock the keypad, hold down the MENU button for 3 seconds after exiting Tech Setup.

Contractor Call Number Note

If Contractor Call Number is set to ON, the phone number will display after a continuous 24-hour call for heating/cooling or if the FAN button is held for 3 seconds. To remove the number, hold the FAN button for 3 seconds.

A Note About Auto Changeover

In Auto mode, you can switch between Auto Heat or Auto Cool by pressing the System key, once the current mode's setpoint is reached. For example, if in Auto Heat, the heat setpoint must be satisfied before switching to Auto Cool. To switch out of Auto, hold down the System key. To return to Auto, toggle the System key to Auto.

A Note About Programmable Fan

The programmable fan feature runs the fan continuously during any programmed ON time period. This helps circulate air and eliminate hot and cold spots.

Reminders Note

Once a Reminder is set, its elapsed time can be checked in Tech Setup. The elapsed time will appear in the text field. It can also be reset by pressing and holding the third button from the left for 3 seconds. Resetting an expired Reminder can be done without entering Tech Setup by pressing and holding the 3rd button from the left for 3 seconds.
