Introduction

The MB20 functions as either a Bluetooth receiver or a Bluetooth transmitter. It is designed to provide a superior Bluetooth connection to audio equipment lacking Bluetooth connectivity. The MB20 is a Class 1 Bluetooth device, offering a transmission range up to ten times that of a typical Class 2 Bluetooth device (like most cell phones). As a receiver, it employs an extremely sensitive receiver for better reception, even from Class 2 devices. As a transmitter, its range is up to ten times that of Class 2 devices, typically reaching 150 feet (45.7 meters) in ideal conditions with mobile devices. Actual range can be affected by physical obstacles and the performance of the connected devices.

The MB20 features internal sampling and bit shifting for sophisticated up-sampling, enabling high-speed digital processing. Its internal DAC processing at 192 kHz offers gentle audio signal filtering, with a digital output at 96 kHz for wider compatibility with other DACs.

The MB20 supports Bluetooth Transmit and Receive with aptX HD for improved sound quality, and aptX™ Low Latency for synchronized audio and video transmission. Using two MB20 units, one as a receiver and one as a transmitter, creates a full wireless aptX HD code and decode bridge.

Receiver or Transmitter

The MB20 can operate as either a Receiver (RX) or a Transmitter (TX). It can switch between these modes but can only perform one function at a time. The mode is set by pushing the RX/TX Button located on the rear of the unit.

When the RX/TX Button is depressed (pushed in), the MB20 is in Receive Mode. When the button is in the released position, the MB20 is in Transmitter Mode. Pushing the RX/TX button toggles between these two modes.

Figure 1 shows the location of the RX/TX Button on the rear panel.

MB20 Front View

The front panel features the McIntosh logo, product name, and a multi-function Front Panel Button. The button's status indicates the operating mode:

  • White: Standby
  • Blue: Bluetooth Receiver Mode
  • Green: Bluetooth Transmitter Mode
  • Flashing (Blue or Green): Discovery Mode

Figure 2 illustrates the MB20 front panel.

Power the MB20

Use the supplied AC/DC adapter and the included USB cable to power the MB20. Plugging the USB cable into a computer may not supply sufficient power for proper operation.

The DC input labeled DC 5V IN is located next to the antenna connection on the rear panel (see Figure 3).

To properly reset the MB20 when powering off and on, allow 5 to 10 seconds between removing and re-inserting the power cord.

MB20 Rear View

The rear panel provides all input and output connections:

  • Analog Balanced (XLR) Inputs: Left and Right
  • Digital Coax Input
  • Antenna Connection
  • Digital Coax Output
  • Analog Balanced (XLR) Outputs: Left and Right
  • Low Latency/High Definition Preference Button
  • Digital Optical Input
  • RX/TX Button
  • DC 5 Volt Power Micro USB Input
  • Digital Optical Output
  • Analog Unbalanced (RCA) Inputs: Left and Right
  • Analog Unbalanced (RCA) Outputs: Left and Right

Figure 3 provides a detailed view of the MB20 rear panel connections.

Attach the Antenna

Attach the included Bluetooth Antenna to the ANT Connection on the center of the rear panel. Tighten the brass nut at the base of the antenna until finger tight.

Transmitter Mode

In Transmitter Mode (TX), the MB20 accepts a signal from one of the following inputs:

  • Analog Balanced (XLR)
  • Analog Unbalanced (RCA)
  • Digital Coax
  • Digital Optical

The MB20 then sends (transmits) the signal to a connected Bluetooth device. The Front Panel Button glows Green in Transmitter Mode.

To Power On: Press and hold the Front Panel Button for two seconds. The MB20 will automatically search for the last paired device. After one minute, it enters Discovery Mode, where it remains for 15 minutes.

The MB20 will pair with a previously paired device or a new device in Discovery Mode. If no pairing occurs after 15 minutes, the MB20 powers off. If the MB20 has not been previously paired, it enters Discovery Mode more quickly (in 10 seconds).

Discovery Mode is indicated by the Front Panel Button flashing green (single blink on and off). To facilitate pairing, it is recommended to minimize other discoverable Bluetooth devices competing with the MB20.

When the MB20 pairs successfully with another device, the Front Panel Button turns solid green. When connected, the MB20 transmits the input signal via Bluetooth.

Upon powering on, the MB20 attempts to pair with the last paired device for one minute. If unavailable, it enters Discovery Mode. If a brief power interruption occurs, confirm volume settings before using connected devices.

Low Latency/High Definition Preference Button: This button sets a preference for either Low Latency or High Definition connections when the MB20 is in Transmitter mode. If both protocols are available on the receiver, this button selects which one to use. Low Latency is preferable for video viewing to better sync video and audio.

Button Position aptX Protocol Preference
In Low Latency
Out High Definition

Receiver Mode

In Receiver Mode (RX), the MB20 receives a Bluetooth signal and sends it to all connected outputs:

  • Analog Balanced (XLR)
  • Analog Unbalanced (RCA)
  • Digital Coax
  • Digital Optical

The Front Panel Button glows Blue in Receiver Mode.

To pair the MB20 to receive from your device:

  • Ensure the RX/TX Button is in the receive (RX) position (depressed).
  • Power on the MB20. The Front Panel Button will glow blue and blink (single blink on and off) in pairing mode.
  • On the device you wish to connect, scan for Available Devices. The MB20 will be listed as "MB20".
  • Select "MB20" and confirm pairing if prompted.

When successfully paired, the Front Panel Button will display solid blue. Unsuccessful pairing will display solid white. You can use the Bluetooth menu of your connected device to connect and disconnect the MB20.

Clearing and Resetting

To reset the MB20 and clear the pairing list:

  • Press and hold the Front Panel Button for 10 seconds. The LED will blink, pause, and then double blink. Release the button.
  • Disconnect the DC USB Power Connector from the rear of the MB20 for 10 seconds, then reconnect it.

Packing the MB20

When shipping the MB20, it is highly recommended to pack it in its original shipping materials to prevent damage. Save the original box and packing material. If needed, contact McIntosh Customer Service for replacement packing material. Use only packing material in good condition.
