Using Your Range
WARNING: Fire Hazard
- Do not let the burner flame extend beyond the edge of the pan.
- Turn off all controls when not cooking.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or fire.
Electric igniters automatically light the surface burners when control knobs are turned to the ignition symbol. To set a burner:
- Push in and turn the knob counterclockwise to the ignition symbol. All surface burners will click. Only the burner with the control knob turned to the ignition symbol will produce a flame.
- Turn the knob to anywhere between HIGH and LOW to adjust the flame.
REMEMBER: When the range is in use or during the Self-Cleaning cycle (on some models), the entire cooktop area may become hot.
POWER FAILURE: In case of a prolonged power failure, the surface burners cannot be lit manually. Do not attempt to operate the appliance during a power failure.
Before setting a control knob, place filled cookware on the grate. Do not operate a burner using empty cookware or without cookware on the grate.
Burner Size
Select a burner that best fits your cookware. Burner positions vary based on the model of your range. See the following illustration and chart.
Burner Size | Recommended Use |
---|---|
Small | Low-heat cooking, Melting chocolate or butter |
Large | For large cookware |
Extra-Large | For large cookware, Most powerful burner |
Oval | For longer dishes |
Illustration Description: The illustration shows a top-down view of a range cooktop with burner positions labeled "Back of Range" and "Front of Range". Burner sizes are indicated with circles and labels like Small, Large, Extra-Large, and Oval.
Aluminum Foil Usage
IMPORTANT: To avoid permanent damage to the oven bottom finish, do not line the oven bottom with any type of foil or liner.
For best cooking results, do not cover the entire oven rack with foil because air must be able to move freely.
Positioning Racks and Bakeware
IMPORTANT: To avoid permanent damage to the porcelain finish, do not place food or bakeware directly on the oven door or bottom.
Racks
- Position racks before turning on the oven.
- Do not position racks with bakeware on them.
- Make sure racks are level.
- Place food so it will not rise into the broil element. Allow at least 1/2" (1.3 cm) between pans and the broil element.
To move a rack, pull it out to the stop position, raise the front edge, and then lift it out. Use the following illustrations as a guide for positioning racks.
Illustration Description: The document shows diagrams for rack positioning. For hamburger patties to have a well-seared exterior and a rare interior in the lower oven, use a flat rack in rack position 5. Side 1 should cook for approximately 2.5 to 3.5 minutes. Side 2 should cook for approximately 4 to 5 minutes. Expect a moderate degree of smoke when broiling.
For best results when baking layer cakes on 2 racks, use rack positions 1 (roll-out rack) and 4 (flat rack) with the Convection Bake function. Place the cakes on the racks as shown. If using two flat racks, use rack positions 2 and 4.
For best results when baking cookies on 2 racks, use rack positions 1 (roll-out rack) and 4 (flat rack) with the Bake function. If using 2 flat racks, use rack positions 2 and 4.
Oven Vents
The oven vents release hot air and moisture from the ovens and should not be blocked or covered. Blocking or covering the vents will cause poor air circulation, affecting cooking and cleaning results. Do not place plastics, paper, or other items that could melt or burn near the oven vents.
A. Upper oven vent
B. Lower oven vent
Oven Light
The oven light is a 40 W halogen bulb. Before replacing, make sure the oven and cooktop are cool and the control knobs are in the Off position.
To Replace:
- Disconnect power.
- Turn the glass bulb cover in the back of the oven counterclockwise to remove.
- Remove bulb from socket.
- Replace bulb, using tissue or wearing cotton gloves to handle the bulb. To avoid damage to or decreasing the life of the new bulb, do not touch the bulb with bare fingers.
- Replace bulb cover by turning clockwise.
- Reconnect power.
IMPORTANT: Do not use lamps rated higher than 40 W.
Sabbath Mode
The Sabbath Mode sets the oven to remain on in a bake setting until disabled. For guidance on usage and a complete list of models with Sabbath Mode, visit www.star-k.org or contact KitchenAid customer support.
