Matched Precipitation

MP Rotator Nozzles are available in two precipitation rate options to maximize flexibility in irrigation design.

Standard Nozzle Precipitation Rate

MP Rotator Standard Nozzles feature the industry's slowest precipitation rate, approximately 0.4 in/hr. This rate helps prevent runoff in most soil applications and allows for gentle hydration of the landscape.

MP800 Nozzle Precipitation Rate

MP Rotator MP800 Nozzles have a precipitation rate of approximately 0.8 in/hr, enabling high-efficiency irrigation in small spaces and medium-grade soils.

Visual Description: Diagram showing water falling at a rate of 0.4 inches per hour over one hour, and another diagram showing water falling at 0.8 inches per hour over one hour.

Matching Soil Intake Rates

Matching your nozzle's precipitation rate to your soil's intake rate is crucial for eliminating runoff and conserving water. With two precipitation rate options for the MP Rotator, you can select the best nozzle for your specific plant material, soil type, and slope.

  • MP Rotator Standard Nozzles deliver water slowly, at a rate most soils and slopes can effectively absorb.
  • MP800 Nozzles deliver water at half the rate of a spray nozzle, better matching typical soil intake rates.
  • Standard spray nozzles often apply water at a rate higher than soil absorption capacity, leading to runoff in most soil types.

Application and Settings

MP Rotator Application

Specify the MP Rotator as the desired nozzle within a spray head body. Retrofit existing spray systems by installing the MP Rotator onto any conventional spray head or shrub adapter.

Radius Adjustment

All MP Rotator models allow for easy radius adjustment of up to 25%, while automatically maintaining matched precipitation. Turn the nozzle adjustment screw clockwise to reduce the radius or counterclockwise to increase it. Four full rotations maximize the effect; additional rotations do not alter performance.

Arc Setting

MP Rotator nozzles feature a fixed left edge on models ranging from 90° to 210° and 210° to 270°. Adjust the arc by turning the adjustment ring clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease.

Pressure

Optimal performance and uniformity are achieved at an operating pressure of 40 PSI. Use the Pro-Spray PRS40 Sprinkler Body to ensure pressure regulation at 40 PSI. For the minimum radius, use the Pro-Spray PRS30 Sprinkler Body for pressure regulation to 30 PSI. To achieve the maximum radius, operate above 40 PSI.

Visual Description: Diagrams illustrating the radius adjustment mechanism (a screw) and the arc adjustment ring on the nozzle. Also shows the Pro-Spray PRS30 and Pro-Spray PRS40 sprinkler bodies.

Layout and Placement

Run Times

Due to their increased uniformity, MP Rotator Nozzles apply water more efficiently. Simply doubling the run time used for traditional spray nozzles may provide sufficient water while using less water overall.

Precipitation Rate Calculations

You can calculate run times based on the lower precipitation rate. For more information on run time calculations, visit hunterindustries.com/tools/runtime.

MP Rotator Nozzles are recommended for head-to-head coverage in either square or triangular layouts.

Square Spacing Application Rate

Formula: 96.25 x GPM of 360° Sprinkler / (Head Spacing x Row Spacing)

Example: 96.25 x 1.48 GPM / (19' x 19') = 142.45 / 361 = 0.39 in/hr

Equilateral Triangular Spacing Application Rate

Formula: 96.25 x GPM of 360° Sprinkler / ((Head Spacing x Row Spacing) x 0.866)

Example: 96.25 x 3.64 GPM / ((30' x 30') x 0.866) = 350.35 / (900 x 0.866) = 350.35 / 779.4 = 0.45 in/hr

Visual Description: Diagrams illustrating 19' Square Spacing (MP-2000-360, 40 PSI, 19' Radius, 1.48 GPM) and 30' Triangular Spacing (MP-3000-360, 40 PSI, 30' Radius, 3.64 GPM).

Note: Equilateral triangular spacing results in a higher application rate per sprinkler due to less area per head.

Zoning with MP Rotator Nozzles

MP Rotator Standard Nozzles have a matched precipitation rate of approximately 0.4 in/hr, allowing any standard MP Rotator model (regardless of arc or radius) to be placed on the same zone.

MP800 Nozzles, with their approximately 0.8 in/hr precipitation rate, should be zoned separately from Standard MP Rotators to maintain matched precipitation within each zone, whether using square or triangular layouts.

Visual Description: Diagram showing two zones. Zone 1 includes MP-800 and MP-815. Zone 2 includes MP-1000 and MP-2000.

MP Rotator MP800 Nozzles

Maximize water savings in tight spaces with the MP800 series. These highly efficient nozzles utilize multi-stream, multi-trajectory technology for coverage in smaller areas. The MP800 delivers water to distances as short as 6' at a matched precipitation rate of approximately 0.8 in/hr, less than half the rate of traditional spray nozzles.

Radius and Arc Options

Visual Description: A series of diagrams showing the coverage patterns for MP-800SR (6'-12' radius), MP-815 (8'-16' radius), and MP-820 (15'-24' radius) across different arc settings (90°-210°, 210°-270°, 360°). Each nozzle model is shown with its corresponding radius and arc options.

Pressure Ratings

Similar to the Standard Nozzle Family, the MP800 series performs optimally at 40 PSI, yielding excellent coverage and distribution uniformity. To achieve the lowest radius setting (6'), inlet pressure must be regulated to 30 PSI using a Pro-Spray PRS30 Sprinkler Body. For peak performance, use a Pro-Spray PRS40 Sprinkler Body.

Visual Description: Comparison of Pro-Spray PRS30 (for minimum radius) and Pro-Spray PRS40 (for peak performance) sprinkler bodies.

Side Strip and Corner Models

Side Strip Precipitation Example

The precipitation rate for MP Rotator Strip Nozzles depends on the system layout. The following is an example of a potential design and its associated precipitation rate:

Visual Description: A diagram showing a rectangular lawn area with sprinklers placed at intervals. Dimensions are indicated: 5' width, 30' length sections, with sprinklers spaced 15' apart along the length and 5' from the edges.

Precipitation Rate Calculation (Total Area Method):

P = 96.25 x Total Flow (GPM) / Total Area (ft²)

P = 96.25 x (0.19 + 0.38 + 0.38 + 0.38 + 0.19) / (5' x 60') = 0.49 in/hr

Uniformity

Uniformity Samples

The varied streams of the MP Rotator Nozzle ensure even coverage across all landscape areas when properly installed, resulting in superior uniformity compared to traditional spray nozzles. Independent studies confirm this efficiency benefit. Learn more at hunterindustries.com/site-studies.

The following are examples of MP Rotator profiles and their associated uniformities, based on indoor tests under controlled conditions. On-site conditions may affect actual uniformity, and data may change with product development.

Uniformity Graphs

Below each precipitation graph is a "CU and DU for Rectangular Spacings" graph showing Uniformity % (CU and DU) versus row/head spacing (in feet).

Cost and Water Savings

Lower System Cost

Designs utilizing MP Rotator Nozzles require less material and equipment than traditional spray designs, leading to reduced overall project costs. The lower flow rates allow more heads to operate simultaneously, decreasing the number of valves needed.

Filtration Recommendations and Wastewater Applications

Filtration Guidelines

Primary filtration is recommended when operating with dirty water. A general guideline suggests using a primary filter with a mesh rating five times that of the nozzle filter (e.g., a 20-mesh nozzle filter requires a 100-mesh primary filter). Field testing indicates the MP-800SR performs well in dirty water conditions when used with a 120-mesh primary filtration system.
