Hunter MP Rotator® Design Guide

High-Efficiency Multi-Stream Nozzle

Product Introduction

The Hunter MP Rotator is a high-efficiency multi-stream nozzle designed for optimal irrigation performance.

Key Features:

Matched Precipitation

MP Rotators are available in two precipitation rate options for flexible irrigation design:

Matching precipitation rate to soil intake rate is crucial to prevent runoff and conserve water. The MP Rotator's options allow for selection based on plant material, soil type, and slope.

Infiltration Rate by Soil Type:

Soil Type 0-5% Slope 5-8% Slope 8-12% Slope >12% Slope
Coarse Sand - -
Fine Sand - -
Sandy Loam - -
Fine Sandy Loam - -
Loam/Silt Loam - -
Clay/Clay Loam - -

Water infiltration into the soil is less than: 40 mm/hr, 25 mm/hr, 13 mm/hr. Cycle and Soak required to avoid runoff.

Application

  1. MP Rotator Application: Specify the MP Rotator as the desired nozzle in a spray head body. Retrofit spray systems by installing the MP Rotator onto any conventional spray head or shrub adapter.
  2. Radius Adjustment: All models allow for easy radius adjustment of up to 25% while maintaining automatic matched precipitation. Turn the nozzle adjustment screw clockwise to reduce the radius or counterclockwise to increase it.
  3. Arc Setting: The MP Rotator has a fixed left edge on 90°-210° and 210°-270° models. Turn the adjustment ring clockwise to increase the arc, and counterclockwise to decrease it.
  4. Pressure: Optimal performance is reached at 2.8 bar (280 kPa). Use the Pro-Spray PRS40 for pressure regulation. To achieve the minimum radius, use the Pro-Spray PRS30 for pressure regulation to 2.1 bar (210 kPa).

MP Rotator Factory Settings:

New MP Rotators are shipped from the factory at the maximum radius setting with the following arc settings:

Layout and Placement

Run Times:

Due to increased uniformity, doubling the run time used for traditional spray nozzles may provide sufficient water while using less overall. Run times can also be calculated based on precipitation rate. Visit www.hunterindustries.com/tools/runtime for calculations.

Precipitation Rate Calculations:

MP Rotators are recommended for head-to-head coverage in square or triangular layouts.

Square Spacing Application Rate:

96.25 × Flow rate of 360° sprinkler (m³/hr) / (Head spacing × Row spacing)

Example: 1000 × 0.34 m³/hr / (5.8 × 5.8) = 10.1 mm/hr

Equilateral Triangular Spacing Application Rate:

1000 × Flow rate for 360° sprinkler (m³/hr) / (Head spacing × Head spacing) × 0.866

Example: 1000 × 0.84 m³/hr / (9.1 × 9.1) × 0.866 = 11.7 mm/hr

Note: Equilateral triangular spacing has a higher application rate than square spacing due to less area per sprinkler.

Zoning with the MP Rotator:

Standard MP Rotators have a matched precipitation rate of approximately 10 mm/hr, allowing any arc or radius to be placed on the same zone. The MP800 Series, with a precipitation rate of approximately 20 mm/hr, should be zoned separately to maintain matched precipitation within each zone.

MP800 Series

Matched Precipitation:

The MP800 Series offers multi-stream, multi-trajectory technology for smaller areas. It delivers water to distances as short as 1.8 m at a matched precipitation rate of approximately 20 mm/hr.

Pressure Ratings:

The MP800 Series prefers 2.8 bar (280 kPa) for optimal performance. To achieve the lowest radius setting of 1.8 m, regulate the inlet pressure to 2.1 bar (210 kPa) using a Pro-Spray PRS30.

Pair the MP Rotator with a Pro-Spray PRS30 to achieve minimum radius.

Pair the MP Rotator with a Pro-Spray PRS40 for peak performance.

MP1000, MP2000, MP3000, MP3500

Matched Precipitation:

All standard MP Rotators have a matched precipitation rate of approximately 10 mm/hr across the radius range of 2.5 m to 10.7 m.

Side Strip and Corner Models

Side Strip Precipitation Example:

The precipitation rate of MP Strips depends on the system layout. The following is an example of a potential design and associated precipitation rate:

Precipitation Rate Using Total Area Method: P = 1000 × Total Flow (m³/hr) / Total Area (m²)

Example: P = 1000 × (0.05+0.10+0.10+0.10+0.05) / 1.5 × 18.28 = 14.6 mm/hr

MP Corner:

The MP Corner is designed for extra coverage in tight corners, reducing the need for neighboring heads to reach into the corner, thus avoiding overspray onto non-target areas.

Uniformity

Uniformity Samples:

The streams of the MP Rotator target all areas of the landscape evenly, yielding superior uniformity over traditional spray nozzles. Several independent studies demonstrate this difference. Read more at hunterindustries.com/site-studies.

The following examples show MP Rotator profiles and associated uniformities from indoor tests. On-site conditions may affect actual uniformity.

Cost and Water Savings

Lower System Cost:

A design with MP Rotators uses less material and equipment than traditional spray designs, resulting in reduced project cost. Lower flow rates allow more heads to run simultaneously, reducing the number of valves needed. Learn more at http://hunter.direct/mprotatorss.

Filtration Recommendations and Wastewater Applications

Filtration Guidelines:

Use primary filtration when operating with dirty water. A general rule is to use primary filtration that is five times the mesh rating of the nozzle filter. Field testing shows the MP800 Series runs well in dirty water with a 120-mesh primary filtration system.

Nozzle Filter Sizes:

MP300020
MP350020
MP Strips and Corner40
MP800SR-9060
MP800SR-36040
MP81540

Hunter's HY filters with 150-mesh size are a great solution for zone-specific MP800 Series arrangements.

Reclaimed Wastewater:

The MP Rotator is suitable for reclaimed wastewater. Its materials (chemical-resistant polypropylene, polyurethane, acetal plastics, stainless steel, and EPDM rubber) are designed to withstand chemicals commonly used in wastewater irrigation.
