PLANNING YOUR INSTALLATION
When planning your installation, first read the filter cartridge information on page 8, and decide where to locate the water filter housing. Then use the drawings on page 4 to guide you. There are many variables to consider as you plan. Some of these are:
- The water filter housing inlet and outlet internal threads are 3/4" NPT.
- Existing plumbing type (copper, threaded, etc.) and nominal size (1/2", 3/4" etc.)
- Tools you have and your plumbing skills
- Cost of materials needed
- Space available for installing the filter housing
Make a simple sketch of your proposed installation and a list of plumbing materials you will need. Obtain everything you need before starting the installation. Be sure you have the tools required.
TYPICAL INSTALLATIONS / TOOLS AND MATERIALS NEEDED
INSTALLATION ON COPPER PLUMBING USING COMPRESSION FITTINGS (FIG. 1)
Diagram Description: Shows a water filter housing connected to copper pipes using compression fittings. Includes an optional shutoff valve, Teflon tape on threads, compression adaptors with nuts and ferrules, and indicates water flow direction.
Materials and Tools Needed:
- 2 compression adaptors, 3/4" NPT x comp. (compression end to fit existing copper pipe)
- Teflon tape
- Tubing cutter
- Sandpaper or emery-cloth
- 2 wrenches, either open end or adjustable jaw, size to fit compression adaptors
Note: Be sure to allow a minimum space of 1-1/2" under the filter for removing the sump, to change the cartridge.
SOLDERED COPPER INSTALLATION (FIG. 2)
Diagram Description: Illustrates connecting the filter housing to copper pipes using sweat (soldered) fittings. Shows an optional shutoff valve, 3/4" copper pipe, and a 3/4" NPT x sweat adaptor with Teflon tape.
Materials and Tools Needed: (See page 5 for details)
THREADED INSTALLATION (FIG. 3)
Diagram Description: Depicts installation using threaded pipes and fittings. Shows an optional shutoff valve, 3/4" nipple, union fittings, and a 3/4" NPT x sweat adaptor.
Materials and Tools Needed: (See page 6 for details)
INSTALLATION STEPS
A. USING COMPRESSION FITTINGS, FIG. 1
- Apply several wraps of Teflon tape to the threads of both compression fittings.
- Carefully turn the compression fittings into the water filter head inlet and outlet and tighten. Do not cross-thread and damage the threads. Do not overtighten and crack the head.
- Remove the nut and brass ferrule from both compression fittings and set aside. Measure the distance "D" (to the shoulder inside of fittings where copper pipe butts against).
- CAUTION: Turn off the water supply to the main pipe. Open a high and low faucet in the water system to drain the pipe.
- On the main water pipe, mark the dimension "D" where the filter will be installed. Double-check your measurement before cutting.
- Use a tubing cutter to remove the section of pipe. Remove all burrs and rough edges with sandpaper or emery-cloth.
- Place a nut and brass ferrule (from compression fittings) onto both pipe ends.
- With the inlet side of the water filter facing incoming water, spread the pipes apart and fit both pipe ends into the compression fittings. Move a ferrule and nut up to the fitting. Turn on and tighten the nut. Hold the fitting with one wrench while tightening the nut with the other. Repeat on the other side.
- Note: If water flow is from right to left, turn the water filter so the inlet is to the right.
- Before turning on the water supply, remove the sump from the filter head and install the filter cartridge (see page 9).
- IMPORTANT: The house cold water pipe is often used to ground electrical outlets. If the water filter housing has broken this ground, restore it by installing a #4 copper wire across the filter, tightly clamping at both ends.
B. SOLDERED COPPER FITTINGS, FIG. 2
Materials and Tools Needed: 2 sweat adaptors (3/4" NPT x sweat), lead-free solder and flux, soldering torch, Teflon tape, sandpaper or emery-cloth, open end or adjustable jaw wrench.
CAUTION: Heat created when soldering can damage the water filter housing. Use procedures to protect the filter.
- CAUTION: Turn off the water supply to the main pipe. Open a high and low faucet to drain the pipe.
- On the main water pipe, remove a section of pipe about 12" long using a tubing cutter. Thoroughly clean and remove all burrs and rough edges from both pipe ends with sandpaper or emery-cloth.
- Note: Use lead-free solder and flux only. Ensure pipe and fittings are properly cleaned.
- Solder a sweat adaptor onto one of the pipe ends.
- Place, but do not solder, a straight connector onto the other pipe end.
- Remove the sump from the filter head and set aside.
- After cooling, apply several wraps of Teflon tape to the threads on the sweat adaptor fitting.
- Carefully turn the filter head INLET (if water flow is from the left) onto the sweat adaptor fitting. If water flow is from the right, turn the outlet side of the head onto the fitting. Do not cross-thread or overtighten and crack the filter head.
- Turn a sweat adaptor fitting into the other side of the filter head and hand tighten only. Measure the distance "D" (similar to compression fitting installation) and mark this dimension on a length of copper pipe. Cut the pipe.
- Remove the sweat adaptor fitting from the filter head and solder it to the cut length of pipe.
- After cooling, apply several wraps of Teflon tape to the threads on the sweat adaptor fitting. Apply flux and place the pipe end of the soldered assembly into the straight connector. Then turn the adaptor end into the filter head and tighten.
- Solder both sides of the straight connector.
- Before replacing the sump and turning on the water supply, install the filter cartridge (see page 8).
- Note: Read the grounding information on page 5 and comply if required to maintain continuity.
C. THREADED PIPE AND FITTINGS, FIG. 3
Materials and Tools Needed: Pipe threading tool, pipe wrenches, pipe joint compound, union fittings, and pipe nipples.
Connect the filter housing as typically shown in FIG. 3, page 4. Observe the following:
- Use pipe joint compound on all external threads.
- Do not turn pipe or fittings too tightly into the filter head or you may break it.
- It is important to have some linear movement in the house main water pipe. This will allow you to tighten union fittings without damaging the filter head if pipe lengths are not exact.
Note: Read the grounding information on page 5 and comply if required to maintain continuity.
WATER FILTER HOUSING UNDERSINK, TO FILTER WATER TO ONE FAUCET
REFER TO PAGE 5. If optional kits are used, follow instructions included with them.
- Close the cold water side shutoff valve. (Usually, there is a shutoff under the sink. If not, close the main water shutoff valve near the water meter or pressure tank.)
- Cut and remove a section of the cold water pipe.
- If plumbing with flexible tubing, hang or support the filter housing. If using rigid pipe, ensure a minimum of 1-1/2" clearance under the filter for sump removal when changing the filter cartridge.
- Use the plumbing procedures on page 5 for compression fittings. Follow procedures on pages 5 and 6 for sweat copper and threaded pipe installation. Ensure water flow is into the filter inlet side and from the outlet side to the faucet.
- Note: A grounding jumper wire is not required for undersink installations.
- Before turning on the water supply, remove the sump from the filter head and install the filter cartridge (see below).
FILTER CARTRIDGE INSTALLATION
TURN TO PAGE 9 AND FOLLOW ALL STEPS UNDER "FILTER CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT".
FILTER CARTRIDGE / USEFUL LIFE / REPLACEMENT
FILTER CARTRIDGE LIFE
Several variables determine how long a cartridge will last. These include:
- Where the water filter is installed (filtering all house water, or just to one faucet)
- How much water you use
- How much sediment, taste and/or odor, or other unwanted substance is in the water
Use the following information as a guide. You will know it is time to replace the cartridge when you first notice the return of the unwanted substance in your water or a substantial reduction in flow.
Other filter cartridges are available from Sears to remove (1) sediments, (2) tastes and odors, (3) tastes, odors and chemical contaminants, and (4) tastes, odors and lead.
Activated carbon cartridges are often used to remove chlorine taste and smell, typically for a single faucet like the kitchen cold.
Sediment Cartridges:
Sears Item No. 42-38478 (25 micron) or 42-38480 (5 micron): These remove sand, silt, clay, dirt, and other sediments. The 25 micron cartridge filters larger sediments with higher flow and less pressure drop. The 5 micron cartridge filters finer sediments, usually for a single faucet. Cartridge life for a single faucet is about 6 months maximum; it is less when filtering all house water.
Replace sediment cartridges when water pressure drops at the single faucet or the entire house supply.
Filtering water to a single faucet, the cartridge may last 6 months or more. Cartridge life is less when filtering all house water. If the cartridge also removes lead or chemical contaminants, it is more important to replace it frequently.
Note: Small amounts of hydrogen sulfide ("rotten egg" odor) may be reduced by taste and odor filters for a short time, quickly exhausting the carbon media. Consult your Sears store for proper continuous treatment.
Taste and Odor Cartridges:
Sears offers several taste and odor filter cartridges for single-faucet use, not whole-house filtration:
- Sears Item No. 42-34370: for 95% chlorine reduction.
- Sears Item No. 42-34365: for 99% chlorine reduction, plus chemical contaminants.
To filter sediments from all house water, locate the housing on the main water supply pipe. Ask Sears associates about products for whole-home taste and odor removal. You can also filter water to one faucet, e.g., under the kitchen sink for cold drinking water. Taste and odor filters are typically installed for single-faucet use.
Diagrams:
Filtering All House Water: Schematic shows water flowing from city supply, through a pressure tank, to the water filter housing, and then to the cold water heater.
Filtering Water To One Faucet: Schematic shows water flowing from city supply, through the water filter housing, to the kitchen sink's cold water tap.
FILTER CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT
CAUTION: Never remove the sump with water pressure in the filter.
- Turn the filter handle to the OFF or BYPASS position to relieve pressure. Some water may leak out.
- Turn the sump counter-clockwise (to the left) to remove it from the filter head. Be careful, the sump is full of water. Do not lose the large o-ring seal.
- Clean the inside of the sump with warm, soapy water and rinse well.
- Remove the wrapper from the new filter cartridge and insert it into the sump. Some cartridges fit either way, others only one way.
- Lightly lubricate the o-ring seal in the sump with silicone grease or Vaseline. Ensure it is fully seated in the groove.
- Hold the sump up to the filter head, aligning the center hole in the cartridge with the protrusion on the bottom of the head.
- Note: If the sump does not tighten, the cartridge may be upside down or crooked. Check orientation.
- Carefully turn the sump clockwise (to the right) onto the filter head and tighten securely. Do not cross-thread.
- If installed for whole house filtering, partially open a house faucet on the outlet side. For undersink installations, open the sink faucet. Then turn the filter handle to ON, allowing the housing to fill with water.
- Close the house faucet. Check for leaks between the sump and the head.
- Note: If leaking occurs, turn off water supply, depressurize, disassemble, and check the o-ring for cuts or damage, and sealing surfaces for foreign material. Relubricate the o-ring and press into the groove.
Using the Filter Wrench
The adjustable filter wrench helps turn the valve to "Off", "On", or "Bypass" positions and remove the sump.
Turning the valve: Push the "push/slide" button on the wrench and move the slide up into the wrenching area to fit the valve. The valve turns clockwise from "On" to "Off" and "Bypass", and counter-clockwise from "Bypass" to "Off" and "On".
Caution: Forcing the valve beyond "On" or "Bypass" positions will damage it.
Removing the sump: Push the slide back into the wrench handle to open the wrenching area. Push the "push/slide" button and push the slide into the wrench handle. Note: Turn the valve to "Bypass" or "Off" before removing the sump. To remove the sump, turn it counter-clockwise.
The valve has a pressure relief; a small amount of water may exit the top cap as the valve is turned.
