Atera Strada/Genio Rear Carrier Guide
This document provides instructions and answers common questions regarding the Atera Strada and Genio series rear bike carriers.
Mounting the Atera Rear Carrier
Atera rear carriers from the Strada-series are fixed to the tow bar using a tensioning mechanism. This mechanism has up to 4 locking steps, indicated by audible clicks as the tensioning lever is pressed down. The final position depends on the diameter of the tow bar's ball head. For most couplings, the lever does not need to be pressed fully horizontal; a 45-60 degree position is often sufficient. Avoid over-tensioning.
Checking the Fit: Test the carrier's stability in the first clamp/click position. If it cannot be turned sideways on the tow bar and the key locks, you can proceed to load. If it can still be turned and the lock doesn't close, press the lever to the next locking position and repeat until the carrier is secure and the lock closes.
Correct Placement: The Atera Strada-series bike carrier is mounted on the tow bar. The ball-clamping mechanism secures it to the ball head when the lever is pressed down. The carrier is correctly mounted when the green indicator is visible on the topside of the ball head. Press the lever until the lock closes and the carrier is no longer moving sideways. The lever's final position may vary depending on the tow bar's ball head size.

Carrier Compatibility and Capacity
Vehicle Compatibility: All Atera rear carriers (Strada- and Genio-series) can be mounted on cars with a tow bar, provided the tow bar is not made of full-aluminium and has a minimum load capacity of 50 kg. The maximum load capacity of the carrier must not exceed the tow bar's capacity as stated in the vehicle manufacturer's manual.
E-bike Transport: E-bikes can be transported with all Atera rear carrier models (Strada- and Genio-series). For the Strada DL 2/3 models, transport light e-bikes with a maximum of 23.5 kg per bike. The permitted load for the Strada DL 2 is 47 kg, and for the Strada DL 3 is 45 kg.
Axle Distance: The Strada E-Bike ML model is recommended for bikes with a wide axle distance of 122 cm.
Aluminium Tow Bars: Check if the tow bar is full-aluminium. Many tow bars from recent years are only aluminium-coated. Test with a magnet. Tow bars from the 90s may not be suitable. Consult the manufacturer for details and safety certificates.
Number of Bikes: The number of bikes you can transport depends on your tow bar's load capacity. Atera rear carriers are available for up to four bikes.
Tailgate Opening: Tailgate opening depends on the mounted tow bar and vehicle specifics. A test mounting at an Atera dealer is recommended to determine compatibility. The Atera Genio Pro and Atera Strada DL 3 offer wider opening angles compared to the 2-series models (DL 2, Evo 2, Vario 2) which have shorter roller systems.
Vans with Swing Doors/Large Tailgates: The Atera Genio Pro and Atera Strada DL 3 are suitable for vans with swing doors or large tailgates due to their tilting mechanisms and wide roller systems. For the Strada DL 3, if swing doors cannot be opened, tilting the carrier and loosening the towball tension allows luggage access.
Mobile Homes: Depending on the tow bar, the Genio Pro or Strada DL 3 may allow opening rear doors of mobile homes (e.g., Fiat Ducato). A test mount at an Atera dealer is recommended.
Features and Specifications
Theft Protection: Each bike is protected against theft on the carrier.
Tyre Widths:
- Genio Pro: Up to 4.0 inches as standard.
- Strada series: Up to 2.4 inches (60.96 mm) as standard.
- With additional 300 mm ratchet straps (set, 4 pcs, item-no. 022 730): Up to 3.0 inches (76.2 mm).
- With additional 350 mm ratchet straps (set, 4 pcs, item-no. 022 735): Up to 4.0 inches (101.6 mm).
For older carriers, check if straps are riveted or replaceable. Riveted straps can be replaced with new wheel holders.
Distance Holders: For Genio Pro, Strada Evo 2/3, and Vario 2/3, distance holders can be removed and replaced for easier bike loading. For other Strada models, the distance holder can be moved on the support bracket.

7-Pole Tow Bar: Use a 13-to-7-pole adapter, available as an accessory.
Carrier Fixing Issue: If the carrier cannot be fixed even in lever position four, and the holding bracket has two large openings, use the compensation plate (item-no. 095 611) to rebuild tension. Avoid forcing the lever into the fourth position.
Driving Speed: In Germany, the recommended speed is 130 km/h; there is no legal limitation.
Additional Information
Reversing Lamp: It is permissible for only one reversing lamp to function, as all models have type approval.
Additional Licence Plate: In Germany, obtain an additional license plate from any license tag manufacturer by showing your user manual.
Spare Key: Order a spare key from a specialist dealer. You will need the three-digit key number engraved on the lock cylinder.
International Use: Atera rear carriers can be used abroad. Always check country-specific regulations.
