Principles of Operation

Today's houses are constructed using “Green” techniques and energy saving systems. These practices and innovations help reduce utility bills but can prevent the introduction of fresh air. Without ventilation, stale air and contaminants from cleaning, painting, and exhaust from attached garages can remain in the air for extended periods.

Your Aprilaire ventilation controller brings in fresh air and circulates it through your home around the clock to help reduce the stuffy effects of trapped stale air. The actual rate of ventilation is determined by the size of your home and the number of occupants. With this ventilation controller, you have a dependable way of automatically providing fresh air to your home.

The controller continuously monitors indoor humidity and outdoor temperature, operating according to timer settings adjusted to your preference, local codes, or the HVAC industry recognized ASHRAE 62.2-2010 guidelines.

The ventilation controller will not allow outside air to enter if it could potentially raise the indoor humidity to high levels. To prevent this, the controller has an upper limit of 55% RH when the outdoor temperature is above 50°F. It can also prevent ventilation in extreme high or low temperatures. Consult your installing contractor to enable or disable these limits.

? Please Note: Ventilation will not occur if the inlet is clogged with debris. Clean this regularly.

Setting Instructions

Your ventilation controller is installed in the return duct of your furnace or heat pump. The primary user-adjustable setting is the ventilation time per hour. For example, if the controller knob is set to 20 minutes, you will receive 20 minutes of ventilation every hour. Ventilation occurs during heating and cooling calls. If the heating or cooling system does not initiate ventilation, the controller will turn on the furnace blower to provide the set ventilation time.

A close-up of the circular dial on the Aprilaire Digital Ventilation Controller. It shows markings for OFF, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 Minutes Per Hour, and a TEST/RESET position. The dial pointer is shown set to approximately 20 minutes.
  • The dial is labeled in 10-minute increments but can be set to any estimated value within 5-minute accuracy. The installer will have pre-set this according to your home's size and number of occupants. If you feel more or less time is needed, turn the knob a maximum of 5 minutes either way. Allow ventilation at the new setting to operate for 24 hours before making further adjustments.
  • The TEST/RESET setting is used to check the device for proper installation. This setting will activate the controller for only 1 minute. Do not leave the knob at TEST/RESET.

Limited Warranty

Research Products Corporation's exclusive obligation under this warranty is to supply, without charge, a replacement for the Controller found to be defective within the five (5) year period, provided it is returned not later than thirty (30) days after the end of the five (5) year period to your original supplier or to Research Products Corporation, Madison, Wisconsin 53701, along with the installation date.

This warranty does not obligate Research Products Corporation for any labor costs and does not apply to defects in workmanship or materials furnished by your installer, as opposed to defects in the Controller itself.

Research Products Corporation's liability for incidental or consequential damages, other than damages for personal injuries, resulting from any breach of the implied warranties or this limited warranty is expressly excluded.

Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusions or limitations may not apply to you.
