How to Use the Elliptical

How to Plug in the Power Adapter

IMPORTANT: If the elliptical has been exposed to cold temperatures, allow it to warm to room temperature before plugging in the power adapter. Failure to do so may damage console displays or other electronic components.

Plug the power adapter into the receptacle on the elliptical frame. Then, plug the power adapter into an appropriate, properly installed outlet.

Diagram shows a power adapter and plug.

How to Move the Elliptical

Moving the elliptical requires two persons due to its size and weight.

Have one person place a foot against a wheel. Grip the handle and lift the frame until the elliptical rolls on the wheels. Carefully move it to the desired location, then lower it to the floor.

Diagrams show lifting and placing the elliptical.

How to Level the Elliptical

If the elliptical rocks slightly, turn one or both of the leveling feet beneath the front of the frame until the rocking motion is eliminated.

Diagram shows a leveling foot.

How to Adjust the Stride of the Elliptical

Turn the adjustment knobs clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the stride. Ensure both adjustment knobs are at the same setting.

Diagram shows adjustment knobs.

How to Adjust the Positions of the Pedals

Each pedal can be adjusted to several positions. Pull the pedal handle outward, move the pedal to the desired position, and release the handle into an adjustment hole. Ensure both pedals are in the same position.

Diagram shows adjusting pedal position.

How to Exercise on the Elliptical

To mount, hold the handlebars and step onto the lower pedal, then the other pedal. Push the pedals to start a continuous motion.

Pedals can turn in either direction. It is recommended to turn them in the direction shown by the arrow for consistency, but the opposite direction can be used for variety.

To dismount, wait for the pedals to stop completely. Note: The elliptical does not have a freewheel; pedals continue to move until the flywheel stops. When stationary, step off the higher pedal first, then the lower pedal.

Console Troubleshooting

How to Level the Elliptical

If the elliptical rocks, adjust leveling feet (see page 15).

How to Adjust the Reed Switch

If console feedback is incorrect, adjust the reed switch. Unplug the power adapter first.

Using a flat screwdriver, pry off the Left Shield Disc (103).

Locate the Reed Switch (86). Align a Magnet (88) on the Pulley (53) with the switch. Loosen screw (99), slide the switch toward or away from the magnet, and retighten the screw.

Plug in the power adapter and move pedals back and forth. Repeat until correct feedback is displayed. When adjusted, unplug the adapter, reattach the shield disc, and plug the adapter back in.

How to Adjust the Drive Belt

If pedals slip even at highest resistance, the drive belt may need adjustment. Unplug the power adapter before adjusting.

Remove screw (139) and Access Cover (136).

Loosen Pivot Screw (97), tighten Belt Adjustment Screw (79) until the Drive Belt (57) is tight, then retighten Pivot Screw (97).

Exercise Guidelines

⚠️ WARNING: Before beginning any exercise program, consult your physician. This is especially important for persons over age 35 or persons with pre-existing health problems.

The heart rate monitor is not a medical device. It is an exercise aid for determining heart rate trends.

These guidelines help plan your exercise program. Remember, proper nutrition and rest are essential.

Exercise Intensity

Exercising at the proper intensity is key. Use your heart rate as a guide.

The chart below shows recommended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exercise:

Age Fat Burning (Low) Max Fat Burning (Mid) Aerobic Exercise (High)
20 165 155 145
30 155 145 138
40 145 130 130
50 140 125 125
60 130 118 115
70 125 110 110
80 115 103 103

Find your age at the bottom. The three numbers above your age define your training zone.

Burning Fat

Exercise at a low intensity for a sustained period. Your body uses stored fat calories for energy after the initial minutes. Adjust intensity until heart rate is near the lowest number in your training zone. For maximum fat burning, aim for the middle number.

Aerobic Exercise

To strengthen your cardiovascular system, perform aerobic exercise. Adjust intensity until heart rate is near the highest number in your training zone.

Workout Guidelines

Warming Up

Start with 5-10 minutes of stretching and light exercise to increase body temperature, heart rate, and circulation.

Training Zone Exercise

Exercise for 20-30 minutes within your training zone. (In the first few weeks, limit to 20 minutes). Breathe regularly; do not hold your breath.

Cooling Down

Finish with 5-10 minutes of stretching to increase flexibility and prevent post-exercise problems.

Exercise Frequency

Complete three workouts per week with at least one rest day between. After a few months, up to five workouts per week may be desired. Make exercise a regular and enjoyable part of your life.

Suggested Stretches

Move slowly when stretching; never bounce.

  1. Toe Touch Stretch: Stand with knees bent, bend forward from hips. Relax back and shoulders. Reach toward toes. Hold for 15 counts, relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Hamstrings, back of knees, back.
  2. Hamstring Stretch: Sit with one leg extended. Bring opposite foot sole toward extended leg's inner thigh. Reach toward toes. Hold for 15 counts, relax. Repeat 3 times per leg. Stretches: Hamstrings, lower back, groin.
  3. Calf/Achilles Stretch: One leg forward, hands on wall. Keep back leg straight, foot flat. Bend front leg, lean forward. Hold for 15 counts, relax. Repeat 3 times per leg. To stretch achilles tendons further, bend back leg. Stretches: Calves, achilles tendons, ankles.
  4. Quadriceps Stretch: With hand on wall for balance, reach back and grasp one foot. Bring heel close to buttocks. Hold for 15 counts, relax. Repeat 3 times per leg. Stretches: Quadriceps, hip muscles.
  5. Inner Thigh Stretch: Sit with soles of feet together, knees outward. Pull feet toward groin. Hold for 15 counts, relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Quadriceps, hip muscles.

Diagrams illustrate each stretch.
