General Safety Instructions for Electric Tools
Introduction
This section contains general safety instructions formulated according to the European standard EN/IEC 62841 for hand-held motor-operated electric tools. STIHL is obliged to provide these instructions. Safety instructions in the "Electrical Safety" section do not apply to STIHL battery-powered products.
WARNING
Read all safety instructions, warnings, text for diagrams, and technical data provided with this electric tool. Failure to follow the instructions below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury. Keep all instructions and safety information for future use. The term "electric tool" used in the safety instructions refers to mains-powered electric tools (with a power cord) or battery-powered electric tools (without a power cord).
Workplace Safety
- Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Clutter or poorly lit work areas can lead to accidents.
- Do not operate electric tools in explosive atmospheres containing flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Electric tools spark, which can ignite dust or vapors.
- Keep children and other persons away while operating the electric tool. Distractions can lead to loss of control over the electric tool.
Electrical Safety
- The electric tool's plug must fit the socket. Do not modify the plug. Do not use adapters with earthed electric tools. Using plugs that have not been modified and their corresponding sockets reduces the risk of electric shock.
- Do not touch earthed surfaces such as pipes, radiators, electric heaters, and refrigerators. If your body is earthed, the risk of electric shock increases.
- Protect electric tools from rain and moisture. Water ingress into an electric tool increases the risk of electric shock. ?️
- Do not misuse the connecting cord. It is strictly forbidden to use the connecting cord to carry or drag the electric tool, or to pull the plug. Protect the connecting cord from high temperatures, oil, and sharp edges or moving parts. A damaged or tangled power cord increases the risk of electric shock.
- When working outdoors with electric tools, use only extension cords intended for outdoor use. Using an extension cord designed for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
- If operation in a wet environment cannot be avoided, use a residual current device (RCD). Using an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
Personal Safety
- Be attentive, work with the electric tool carefully and consciously. Do not use the electric tool when tired, or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. Inattentiveness when using the electric tool can lead to serious injury.
- Wear personal protective equipment and always wear safety glasses. ? Wearing personal protective equipment, such as a respirator, non-slip safety footwear, and safety helmet, depending on the type of electric tool and its application, reduces the risk of injury.
- Prevent unintended starting. Before picking up the electric tool, transporting it, or connecting it to the power supply or battery, ensure it is switched off. If you carry the electric tool with your finger on the switch or if the electric tool is connected to the power supply while switched on, accidents can occur.
- Remove adjusting tools and wrenches before switching on the electric tool. Tools or wrenches left in a rotating part of the electric tool can cause injury.
- Avoid unnatural body positions. Maintain a stable stance and balance at all times. This allows for better control of the electric tool in unforeseen situations.
- Wear appropriate clothing. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts of the device.
- If dust extraction and dust collection devices are available, connect and use them properly. Using a dust extraction device can reduce health risks caused by dust.
- Do not let familiarity with the tool make you careless and disregard safety rules for electric tools. Careless actions can lead to serious injuries in fractions of a second.
Using and Handling Electric Tools
- Do not overload the electric tool. Use the electric tool for the specific job it is designed for. For optimal and safe operation, use the appropriate electric tool within its specified operating range.
- Never use an electric tool with a faulty switch. An electric tool that cannot be switched on or off is dangerous and requires repair.
- Before adjusting the device, changing accessories, or putting the electric tool away, unplug it from the socket and/or remove the battery. These precautions prevent the electric tool from starting unintentionally.
- Store unused electric tools in a location inaccessible to children. Do not allow persons who are not trained to use the tool or who have not read these instructions to operate the electric tool. Electric tools in the hands of inexperienced users pose a danger.
- Properly maintain electric tools and accessories. Check moving parts for proper function and ensure they are not jammed, broken, or damaged in a way that could affect the electric tool's function. Before operating the electric tool, have damaged parts repaired. Many accidents are the result of inadequate maintenance of electric tools.
- Cutting tools must be kept clean and sharp. Cutting tools that are properly maintained and have sharp cutting edges are less likely to jam and are easier to guide.
- Use electric tools, interchangeable tools, attachments, etc., in accordance with these instructions. Consider the conditions and type of work to be performed when operating the electric tool. Using the electric tool for purposes other than intended can lead to dangerous situations.
Handles and their surfaces must be kept dry and clean, and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles do not ensure safe operation and control of the electric tool in unforeseen situations.
Using and Handling Battery-Powered Tools
- Charge batteries only in the chargers recommended by the manufacturer. Using a charger intended for a specific type of battery with other batteries may pose a fire hazard.
- Only use batteries designed for the electric tool. Using other batteries may lead to injury and fire.
- Store unused batteries at a safe distance from paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws, and other small metal objects that could bridge the contacts. Short-circuiting the battery contacts can cause burns or fire.
- If battery fluid leaks, avoid contact with the fluid. If accidental contact occurs, wash with water. If fluid gets into the eyes, seek medical attention. Leaking battery fluid can cause skin irritation and burns.
- Do not use damaged or deformed batteries. Damaged or deformed batteries can cause abnormal situations and lead to fire, explosion, or injury.
- Do not expose the battery to fire or excessively high temperatures. Fire or temperatures above 130 °C (265 °F) can cause an explosion.
- Follow all charging instructions and never charge the battery or battery-powered tool at temperatures outside the permissible range specified in the operating manual. Improper charging or charging at temperatures outside the permissible range can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
Maintenance
- Entrust the repair of electric tools to qualified specialists, using only original spare parts. This ensures the safety of the electric tool.
- Maintenance of a damaged battery is prohibited. Any battery maintenance must be performed only by the manufacturer or customer service.
Safety Instructions for Blowers
- Do not use the blower in bad weather, especially during thunderstorms. This prevents the risk of lightning strikes.
- Wear eye protection and hearing protection. ?? Suitable personal protective equipment reduces the risk of injury.
- Always wear non-slip safety footwear when operating the blower. It is forbidden to work barefoot or in open footwear. This reduces the risk of foot injury.
- Do not wear loose clothing or accessories such as scarves, drawstrings, necklaces, belts, etc., which could be caught in the air intake. Tie back long hair or wear a head covering to prevent it from being drawn into the device. Any of these items being drawn into the air intake can increase the risk of injury.
- Do not allow other persons to come too close while operating the blower. Blown debris can increase the risk of injury.
- Never aim the blower nozzle at people, animals, or windows. Exercise extreme caution when blowing debris near stationary objects such as trees, vehicles, or walls, in the direction of which debris may be blown back. Blown fragments can increase the risk of injury.
- Do not use the blower to blow hot or smoldering objects such as cigarettes, matches, or ashes. These ignition sources can increase the risk of fire.
- Do not touch the fan while it is still running. Switch off the blower, wait for the fan to stop, and only then remove the object blocking access to the fan. This reduces the risk of injury from moving parts.
- Before removing jammed material or performing maintenance on the blower, ensure the switch is off. Unexpected activation of the blower during material removal or maintenance can increase the risk of injury.
