Introduction
This document provides a comprehensive guide to operating and configuring your Lennox ComfortSense® 5500 Color Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat. The thermostat offers advanced features for efficient home climate control.
The device features a modern design with a color touchscreen display, showing current time, indoor temperature, and heating/cooling setpoints. The Lennox logo is prominently displayed.
Key Features
The ComfortSense® 5500 Series thermostat is an electronic, 7-day, single-stage, programmable, touchscreen thermostat. Its features include:
- A large, clear color display showing current and set temperatures and time.
- Ergonomic design for intuitive use.
- Smooth Setback Recovery: The system starts early to achieve the setpoint at the beginning of a program period.
- Compressor short-cycle protection: A 5-minute delay to protect the compressor.
- Real-time clock: Maintains accurate time during power failures and automatically adjusts for daylight saving time and leap years.
- Program Hold options: Allows users to override the program schedule temporarily or permanently.
- Flexible programming: Select individual days or groups of days for custom schedules.
- Programmable fan: Offers enhanced performance, especially when integrated with whole-home indoor air quality products.
Temperature Dial Indicator
The thermostat's main screen features a temperature dial indicator, providing at-a-glance information about the system status and temperature settings.

System Status Icons (Left Side):
- ? (Water drop icon): Indicates the system is heating.
- ?️ (Wavy lines icon): Indicates the system is waiting, typically due to a compressor delay.
- ? (Calendar icon): Indicates the system is transitioning to the next schedule setting.
- ? (Leaf icon): Indicates the system is in "away" mode.
Central Display: "inside 80°"
Temperature Dial: A circular dial displays temperature information:
- A: Maximum heat position indicator (displayed in red).
- B: Maximum cool position indicator (displayed in blue).
- C: Area where no system demand is active. In the example, this could be any temperature between 73°F and 77°F.
- D: When there is an active call for heating, this area of the dial fades back and forth from white to red.
- E: When there is an active call for cooling, this area of the dial fades back and forth from white to blue.
- F: The yellow line indicates the actual room temperature on the temperature dial.
Right Side Display:
- X icon: Indicates "Schedule hold until next period".
- heat-to: 72°
- cool-to: 78°
Bottom Display: "heat/cool" mode indicator.
Home Screen
The Home Screen provides a visual overview of the thermostat's current status and allows for quick adjustments.

I. System Status Icons: Equipment operation information displayed on the left side of the home screen. Icons indicate heating demand, cooling compressor delay, cooling demand, or transitioning to the next schedule setting (refer to Table 1).
Screen Navigation and Operating Modes
To interact with the thermostat, press the screen. The first press typically turns on the backlight.
Key Navigation Elements:
- A. OPERATING MODE: Press to access a screen listing available system modes. Selectable modes include: heat/cool, heat only, cool only, off, schedule 1, schedule 2, and schedule 3. Fan operation can also be set to on, auto, or circulate.
- B. AWAY: Selecting AWAY allows the user to set specific heating and/or cooling mode temperatures for when the home is unoccupied. Press
[cancel]
to exit this screen and return to normal operations. - C: Displays the current time.
- D. Menu: Accesses options for notifications, performance report, schedules, and settings.

Setting Temperatures and Schedule Hold
E. Setting Heat-To Temperature: Allows you to set the desired heat-to temperature. Selecting the heat-to area or the temperature dial position indicator will take you to the temperature setting detail screen. The temperature dial will change from white to red when heating is active.
F. Setting Cool-To Temperature: Allows you to set the desired cool-to temperature. Selecting the cool-to area or the temperature dial position indicator will take you to the temperature setting detail screen. The dial will change from white to blue when cooling is active.
G. Current Indoor Temperature: Displays the current indoor temperature.
H. Schedule Hold: Indicates the schedule is on hold until the next time period or permanently.
- To place the schedule on hold, press on either the heat-to or cool-to location on the screen. Adjustments to the temperature setting can be made at this time.
- After approximately three seconds, the screen will display override setting options.
- Available options are 1 hour, 2 hour, or Permanent. Make your selection and press
[set]
. - For 1 or 2-hour settings, the home screen will indicate "schedule hold until [time]". To exit schedule hold early, press the X icon.
- For permanent settings, the home screen will indicate "schedule hold permanently". To exit schedule hold, press the X icon.
I. System Status Icons: Equipment operation information appears along the left side of the home screen. The displayed icons indicate heating demand, cooling compressor delay, cooling demand, or transitioning to the next schedule setting (see Table 1).

Selection Mode
Press anywhere in the indicated area on the screen to select how the system will operate.
Figure 3 illustrates accessing the mode screen, where options like "schedule 1" can be selected.
Operating Modes and Fan Operation
Operating Modes:
- HEAT/COOL: Allows the thermostat to switch automatically between heating and cooling.
- HEAT ONLY: Allows only heating demand.
- COOL ONLY: Allows only cooling demand.
- OFF: Indicates the system has been turned off.
- SCHEDULES: Up to three schedules can be set. Also available are FAN-ON, AUTO, and CIRCULATE options (refer to "Edit Schedules" on page 13 for customization).
- ON, AUTO, and CIRCULATE: Select the desired fan operation. A green check mark (✔️) indicates the selected mode.
If FAN mode AUTO, ON, or CIRCULATE was selected during scheduling for the current period, the thermostat will indicate the current fan mode in the information display (e.g., FAN ON or FAN CIRC).
In CIRCULATE mode, the user can cycle the fan for a programmed period of time each hour during periods of equipment inactivity (i.e., when heating or cooling equipment is not running).

Menu Screen
The Menu screen provides access to various functions of the thermostat.
Menu Options (Figure 4):
- ❗ Notifications (with count 13): View system alerts and reminders.
- ? Performance Report: Access reports on system runtime.
- ✏️ Edit Schedules: Customize heating and cooling schedules.
- ⚙️ Settings: Access various system configurations.
Notifications
When a system error or reminder occurs, a pop-up screen will appear indicating the condition.
- Error code notifications can be dismissed by pressing the back button. For resolution, contact your dealer.
- To manage notifications, press either
[clear]
or[set future reminder]
.
Any active history for notifications (critical errors or reminders) will be listed under Settings > Notification
.
If critical errors occur, they will also be displayed under notifications, as shown in Figure 5. Press the [dealer info]
option for assistance.

Performance Report and Edit Schedules
Performance Report:
This section displays the total number of hours each month that the system has been running. For example, it might show "mar (March) 23H" for 23 hours. To return to the menu screen, press the house icon in the upper left-hand corner.
Note: If a fan mode is selected on the "select mode" screen, it will override any fan setting in individual schedules.
Edit Schedules:
Note: Refer to "Selection Mode" on page 9 to run a specific schedule.
From the HOME screen, press MENU
and then select the [edit schedules]
option.
The edit schedules screen allows for the creation and modification of up to three separate schedules. Each schedule can be renamed and edited. See Figure 7 for detailed editing procedures.

This diagram illustrates the process of renaming and editing schedules. The workflow involves selecting a schedule, choosing days (individual, week/weekend, or all 7 days), and then selecting the operating mode (heat/cool, heat only, or cool only).
Users can define multiple time periods within a schedule, specifying settings for time, fan operation, and temperature setpoints (heat-to, cool-to). A maximum of four time periods can be used per schedule. If time periods are deleted, an option to add them back will appear.
The process includes options to select time or delete periods, and to select fan modes.
User Settings
The User Settings menu allows configuration of various thermostat functions.

The General settings provide information about the thermostat and configure options for screen lock, date & time, and language.

User Settings (Display)
The Display settings allow the user to control some information displayed on the home screen.
