Requirements for Operation, Service and Installation Manuals of Appliances Using Flammable Refrigerants

Qualification of workers:

The manual shall contain specific information about the required qualification of working personnel for maintenance, service, and repair operations. Every working procedure that affects safety means shall only be carried out by competent persons. Examples include breaking into the refrigerating circuit or opening sealed components.

Competence of service personnel:

Information of procedures additional to usual information for refrigerating appliance installation, repair, maintenance, and decommission procedures is required when an appliance with FLAMMABLE REFRIGERANT is affected. Training is carried out by national training organizations or manufacturers accredited to teach relevant national competency standards.

Information and training

No ignition sources

No person carrying out work in relation to a REFRIGERATING SYSTEM shall use any sources of ignition that may lead to the risk of fire or explosion. All possible ignition sources, including cigarette smoking, should be kept sufficiently far away. Prior to work, survey the area for flammable hazards or ignition risks. Display "No Smoking" signs.

Ventilated area

Ensure the area is open or adequately ventilated before breaking into the system or conducting hot work. Ventilation should continue during work to disperse any released refrigerant.

Checks to the refrigerating equipment

When electrical components are changed, they must be fit for purpose and to the correct specification. Follow manufacturer's maintenance and service guidelines. For FLAMMABLE REFRIGERANTS, check the refrigerant charge, ventilation machinery, indirect refrigerating circuits, and markings.

Checks to electrical devices

Repair and maintenance to electrical components require initial safety checks and component inspection. If a fault exists that could compromise safety, do not connect electrical supply until it is satisfactorily dealt with. Initial safety checks include discharging capacitors, ensuring no live electrical components are exposed, and checking earth bonding continuity.

Repairs to sealed components

During repairs to sealed components, disconnect all electrical supplies. If an electrical supply is necessary during servicing, a permanently operating leak detection system should be located at the most critical point.

Repair to intrinsically safe components

Do not apply any permanent inductive or capacitance loads without ensuring they do not exceed permissible voltage and current. Intrinsically safe components must be replaced with manufacturer-specified parts.

Cabling

Check cabling for wear, corrosion, excessive pressure, vibration, sharp edges, or adverse environmental effects, including aging or continual vibration.

Detection of flammable refrigerants

Do not use potential sources of ignition for detecting refrigerant leaks. Electronic leak detectors may be used, but sensitivity may need recalibration for FLAMMABLE REFRIGERANTS. Ensure the detector is not a source of ignition and is suitable for the refrigerant used. Leak detection equipment should be set at a percentage of the LFL of the refrigerant and calibrated. Leak detection fluids are suitable, but avoid detergents containing chlorine.

Removal and evacuation

When breaking into the refrigerant circuit, use conventional procedures. For flammable refrigerants, follow best practices due to flammability. Procedures include safely removing refrigerant, purging with inert gas, evacuation, and flushing.

Charging procedures

Ensure no contamination of refrigerants. Cylinders must be in an appropriate position. The system must be earthed prior to charging. Label the system when charging is complete. Pressure-test and leak-test the system before commissioning.

Decommissioning

Technicians must be familiar with the equipment. Recover refrigerants safely. Take oil and refrigerant samples if required. Ensure electrical power is available. Familiarize with equipment operation, isolate system electrically, and ensure safety before attempting the procedure.
