Energy Efficient Use of Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fan performance and energy savings depend on proper installation and use. Here are tips for efficient performance:
Choosing the Appropriate Mounting Location
Install fans in the middle of the room, at least 7 feet from the floor to the blades and 18 inches from the wall to the blades. If ceiling height allows, install 8-9 feet from the floor for optimal airflow. Consult your Fanimation Retailer for optional mounting accessories.
Turn Off When Not in the Room
Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms. Turn off the fan when the room is unoccupied to save energy.
Using the Ceiling Fan Year Round
- Summer Season: Use the fan counterclockwise. Airflow creates a wind-chill effect. Select a speed for a comfortable breeze; lower speeds use less energy.
- Winter Season: Reverse the motor and operate at low speed clockwise. This creates a gentle updraft, forcing warm air down. Adjust your thermostat when using the fan for additional energy and dollar savings.
Electrical and Structural Requirements
Your fan requires a grounded 120-volt AC, 60 Hz, 15 Amp circuit. Electrical code requires a fan-rated outlet box to support the fan's weight and motion. Fan-rated boxes are labeled and typically support up to a 70lb fan. Ensure your outlet box rating meets the fan's requirements. Figures 1, 2, and 3 show different mounting configurations.
Low Profile Box (Fig. 1)
A 1/2-inch deep pancake box screws to a joist or block, used if only one cable enters the box. Also available in a saddle-mount configuration.
Deep Box (Fig. 2)
A 2-1/4-inch deep box attaches to blocking between joists and accommodates more than one cable.
Deep Box with Brace (Fig. 3)
This hanger spans between two joists, replacing wooden blocking.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or personal injury, mount to an outlet box marked acceptable for fan support (15.9 kg/35 lbs or less) and use provided mounting screws. Most luminaire boxes are not fan-rated and may need replacement. Consult a qualified electrician if in doubt.
If replacing a light fixture, turn off electricity at the main fuse box and remove the existing fixture.
WARNING: Turning off the wall switch is insufficient. Ensure electricity is off at the main fuse box before wiring. All wiring must comply with National and Local codes. The fan must be properly grounded.
WARNING: Follow all wiring instructions carefully to avoid fire or shock. Any electrical work not described must be done or approved by a licensed electrician.
WARNING: Do not operate this fan with a variable (Rheostat) wall controller or dimmer switch, as this could damage the remote control unit.
