Wolf Pro Series Ventilation: Component Access and Removal

This section provides instructions for accessing and removing components from Wolf Pro Series ventilation products. Procedures are arranged to simulate the order of component removal for accessing other parts. Refer to earlier procedures if necessary.

The section is divided into two parts: Section one covers Models CTWH30, CTWH36, and Model IH4227. Section two covers Downdraft Models DD30I/R, DD36I/R, and DD45I/R.

WARNING: To avoid electric shock, disconnect power to the ventilation unit before accessing or removing components powered by electricity or near electrical components.

WARNING: Ventilation units are heavy. Removal from installation should only be performed by a trained authorized service technician or installer to prevent serious injury or death.

CAUTION: Metal edges may be sharp. Use caution during servicing to avoid personal injury.

Common Access and Removal for Downdraft Units

Filter Removal

Filter assemblies are located in the chimney assembly and secured by spring clips. Each assembly consists of a filter grille and a filter insert.

Procedure:

  1. With the chimney in the up position, push down on the filter frame while pulling the filter away from the downdraft.
  2. Separate the filter and filter grille by pulling the filter out of the grille.

(See Figure 4-26 Filter Removal)

Internal Blower Assembly Removal

The blower motor assembly must be removed to access interior components. It can be removed as a unit.

Procedure:

  1. Remove 3/8" (9.5 mm) nuts from channel clamps securing the cover plate and flange of the internal blower assembly to the downdraft frame.
  2. Extract screws securing the motor cover to the downdraft frame and remove the cover.
  3. Extract sheet metal screws from the bottom edge of the downdraft that secure the internal blower assembly to the downdraft frame.
  4. Lift the internal blower assembly until the flange clears the downdraft frame. Turn the assembly to the side to access the wire harness. Disconnect the wire harness at the quick disconnect.
  5. Remove the internal blower from the unit.

(See Figure 4-27 Internal Blower Assembly Removal)

Blower Motor Removal

The blower motor is mounted to the scroll box assembly on three isolators and secured with nuts. The internal blower assembly must be removed first.

Procedure:

  1. Extract screws from the outside edge of the scrollbox cover. Extract screws and 3/8" (9.5 mm) nuts from the scroll box weldment and remove from the unit.
  2. Remove the blower wheel by extracting the setscrew securing it to the blower motor shaft.
  3. From the opposite side of the assembly, extract the 7/16" (11 mm) nuts securing the blower motor to the isolators.
  4. Lift the motor off the isolators.
  5. To remove isolators, from the blower wheel side of the assembly, use a 3/8" socket or wrench to extract the bolts securing the isolators to the scroll box frame.

(See Figure 4-28 Blower Motor Removal)

Capacitor Removal

The capacitor is located in the lower left corner of the scroll box assembly, secured by a bracket and screws.

Procedure:

  1. Extract screws from the outside edge of the scrollbox cover. Extract screws and 3/8" (9.5 mm) nuts from the scroll box weldment and remove from the unit.
  2. Extract bolts securing the capacitor bracket to the scroll box assembly. Lift the bracket off the capacitor.
  3. Remove the rubber cover from the capacitor and disconnect wire leads.

(See Figure 4-29 Capacitor Removal)

CT Hoods and DD Ventilation: Access & Removal

Micro-switch Removal

Micro-switches are located on the front of the gear motor and secured to its bracket with two screws. They control the chimney assembly operation. The internal blower assembly may not need removal depending on installation.

Procedure:

  1. If the internal blower has not been removed, remove the 3/8" (9.5 mm) nuts from channel clamps and lift the clamps off the threaded studs.
  2. Extract screws from the gear motor cover and lift the cover off the unit.
  3. Disconnect electrical leads from the micro-switches. Note: Tag wire leads before disconnecting to ensure correct re-assembly order.
  4. Extract screws securing the micro-switches and lift them off the gear motor assembly.

(See Figure 4-30 Micro-Switch Removal)

Front Air Box Panel Removal

The internal blower assembly must be removed to access the upper and lower front air box panels. Bolts secure the panels to the downdraft frame. The upper panel covers the filter assemblies, and the lower panel covers the chimney slide assembly and electrical components.

Procedure:

  1. Extract bolts from the lower air box panel.
  2. Pull the lower air box cover up and away from the downdraft frame and remove it from the unit.
  3. Extract bolts (1) from the upper air box panel and remove the panel from the unit.

(See Figure 4-31 Air Box Panels Removal)

Gear Motor Removal

The gear motor is secured by screws passing through the back of its bracket into the assembly. The crank assembly, on the back of the bracket, is secured to the motor shaft by a threaded U-shaped clamp and two nuts. The gear motor bracket mounts to threaded studs in the unit frame, secured by 3/8" (9.5 mm) nuts. The internal blower assembly and lower air box panel must be removed first.

Procedure:

  1. Disconnect all wire leads from the left side of the gear motor and from the micro-switches. Remove the wire harness from the hold-down clamp, then feed it through the gear motor bracket.
  2. Extract the screw securing ground wires to the side of the gear motor bracket.
  3. Using a 3/8" (9.5 mm) wrench or socket, remove nuts from both ends of the gear motor bracket.
  4. Lift the gear motor bracket off the threaded studs.
  5. From the back side of the bracket, remove the 3/8" (9.5 mm) nuts from the U-shaped clamp securing the crank assembly to the motor shaft.
  6. From the same side of the bracket, extract the screws that pass through the gear motor bracket and fasten to the gear motor assembly.
  7. Extract screws securing the micro-switches to the gear motor assembly.

(See Figure 4-32 Gear Motor Removal)

Power Control Board Removal

The power control board is located inside a compartment in the bottom right corner of the unit interior. It rests on nylon spacers and is secured by nuts to threaded studs in the unit frame. Screws pass through the left compartment sidewall and fasten into an aluminum bracket riveted to the power control panel. The internal blower assembly and lower airbox panel must be removed first.

Procedure:

  1. From the left side of the power control board compartment, depress the retaining clip and disconnect the wire harness from the power control board.
  2. From the same side of the compartment sidewall, extract screws that fasten into the aluminum bracket of the power control board.
  3. Inside the compartment, using an 11/32" (8.75 mm) socket with extension, remove nuts from the corners of the power control board.
  4. Lift the power control board off the threaded studs.

(See Figure 4-33 Power Control Board Removal)

Power Cord Removal

The power cord enters the unit from the right side and is secured by a strain relief in the right sidewall. The internal blower assembly and lower airbox panel must be removed first.

Procedure:

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the wire harness at the quick disconnect.
  2. Inside the unit, use a flat-bladed screwdriver to compress and push the strain relief through the opening in the sidewall. Pull the power cord out of the unit.

(See Figure 4-34 Power Cord Removal)
