General Precautions
Handling Precautions
When moving the lens from a cold place to a warm place, condensation may form on the outside and inside of the lens. In such cases, place the lens in a plastic bag beforehand to allow it to acclimate to the ambient temperature before taking it out. The same applies when moving from a warm place to a cold place.
Please also refer to the handling instructions in your camera's user manual.
Shooting Precautions
Even when the LED light is off, if you shoot with the lens close to subjects that reflect light easily (e.g., watch glass), the white ring on the front of the lens may appear in the image. Please be aware of this. Attaching the hood can prevent this from happening.

- Shooting of movies or still images is only possible when the "Mode Change Ring" is set to Normal Shooting Mode or Super Macro Shooting Mode.
- If you rotate the "Mode Change Ring" from Normal Shooting Mode towards the storage position during movie shooting, the movie shooting will end.
- If shooting is not possible depending on the "Mode Change Ring" setting, a warning will be displayed on the camera's LCD monitor.
- Do not force the "Mode Change Ring" when it is in the locked state. This may damage the lock release switch mechanism.
Manual Focus
When the camera's focus mode is set to [MF], focus is adjusted manually by rotating the focus ring.
If the focus ring is rotated rapidly, the focus adjustment may lag.
- AF/MF is set on the camera side. Please refer to your camera's user manual.
- When the camera's focus mode is [AF+MF], you can adjust the focus manually by rotating the focus ring while half-pressing the shutter button after AF has been performed. (Full-time manual focus)
Magnification and Shooting Distance
Magnification is the ratio of the subject's size to the image size on the sensor.
Shooting distance is the distance from the imaging plane mark [⚪] on the camera's top to the subject.
At the shortest shooting distance, the distance from the front of the lens to the subject (working distance) is 1.8cm in Normal Shooting Mode and 1.3cm in Super Macro Shooting Mode.
Image Stabilization Function
This lens is equipped with an image stabilization function.
When using the image stabilization function, it corrects slight camera movements (hand shake) during shooting. It also automatically adjusts image stabilization according to shooting conditions (e.g., shooting stationary subjects, panning). The image stabilization function can be turned ON/OFF on the camera side. Please refer to your camera's user manual.
- Diagram 1: Image of a circular object with text 'WAIKIKI 96815 boutique' with image stabilization 'On', showing a slightly blurred but stable image.
- Diagram 2: Image of the same object with image stabilization 'Off', showing a more pronounced blur.
This lens's image stabilization is effective for handheld shooting under the following conditions:
- Close-up (macro) shooting
- Dusk or indoor scenes, dimly lit places
- Museums, stages, or places where flash photography is prohibited
- Unstable footing situations
- Other situations where fast shutter speeds cannot be used
- Panning shots of moving subjects
Image Stabilization Function (cont.)
- As the shooting distance shortens, the effectiveness of image stabilization decreases.
- Subject blur caused by subject movement cannot be corrected.
- For Bulb (long exposure) shooting, set the image stabilization function to [Off]. If set to [On], it may cause the image stabilization function to malfunction.
- When shooting from moving vehicles or similar, the image stabilization effect may not be fully obtained.
- When the image stabilization function is set to [On], battery consumption increases, reducing the number of shots and video recording time compared to when it is [Off].
- For shooting stationary subjects, image stabilization is performed in all directions.
- For panning shots, horizontal panning corrects vertical shake, and vertical panning corrects horizontal shake.
- Shooting with a tripod is possible without issues, but it is recommended to set the image stabilization function to [Off] to conserve battery power.
- Shooting with a monopod also provides similar image stabilization effects to handheld shooting, but the effectiveness may decrease depending on shooting conditions.
Close-up (Macro) Shooting by Hand
Holding the Camera Firmly
When shooting close-up (macro) handheld, hold the camera firmly as shown in the illustration to minimize camera shake and focus shift, and shoot carefully.
Shooting with Servo AF
For close-up (macro) shooting, it is recommended to set the camera's focus mode to Servo AF. For details, please refer to your camera's user manual.
- When shooting close-up (macro), please pay attention to the following:
- Handshake has a greater effect than in general photography, so the image stabilization effect is reduced.
- The depth of field becomes extremely shallow, and focus shift occurs due to the camera's forward/backward movement.
- Illustration 1: A person holding a camera with both elbows resting on a desk for stability.
- Illustration 2: A person holding a camera with their elbows supported by their knees.
- Illustration 3: A person holding a camera against a stable wall, using their body and arms for support.
Exposure for Close-up (Macro) Shooting
Determining Exposure
When shooting with TTL metering, the amount of light passing through the lens is measured, so exposure compensation is not necessary. AE (automatic exposure) shooting is possible with TTL metering at all shooting distances. Select any shooting mode and shoot after checking the shutter speed and aperture value.
Magnification and Effective FNo.
The aperture value displayed on the camera is for when the focus is at infinity (∞). The actual aperture (effective FNo.) becomes darker (the effective FNo. value increases) as the shooting distance gets closer (magnification increases). While this has little effect on exposure in general photography, the change in effective FNo. is significant in close-up (macro) shooting.
Subject conditions greatly influence the determination of correct exposure for close-up (macro) shooting.
Therefore, it is recommended to shoot with varying exposure or to check the captured images on the camera's LCD monitor while shooting.
For close-up (macro) shooting, Aperture-priority AE (Av) or Manual exposure (M) is recommended for easier adjustment of depth of field and exposure.
Exposure for Close-up (Macro) Shooting (cont.)
When determining exposure using an external light meter, add the following exposure multipliers for shooting.

LED Light
The LED light on the front of the lens serves as a shooting assist light for close-up (macro) photography, illuminating the subject. It is not for providing sufficient light in dark places.
The LED light illuminates only when the camera's power is on.
When using the LED light, remove the hood.
By lighting one side of the LED light, you can create shadows on the subject and capture photos with a sense of depth.
- Diagram of the Canon EF-M28mm lens showing the locations of LED Light A and LED Light B on the front.
- Set the "Mode Change Ring" to Normal Shooting Mode or Super Macro Shooting Mode.
- Press the LED Light Activation Button to turn on the LED light.

LED Light A / B Single-Sided Lighting
When the LED light is off, press and hold the LED Light Activation Button to activate single-sided lighting. When single-sided lighting is active, pressing the LED Light Activation Button briefly switches between single-sided lighting modes.
LED Light Dual-Sided Lighting
Briefly pressing the LED Light Activation Button switches the ON/OFF and intensity of dual-sided lighting.
- Flowchart 1: OFF → [Dual-sided lighting: Strong] → [Dual-sided lighting: Weak].
- Flowchart 2: OFF → [LED Light A side lighting: Strong] → [LED Light A side lighting: Weak] → [LED Light B side lighting: Strong] → [LED Light B side lighting: Weak].
Switching Between Dual-Sided and Single-Sided Lighting
When the LED light is on, press and hold the LED Light Activation Button to switch between dual-sided and single-sided lighting.
Hood
The LED light is a shooting assist light for close-up (macro) photography, used to improve shadows on the subject caused by the camera or lens. It is not for providing sufficient light in dark places.
- The LED light also turns off when the camera's power saving function (auto power off) is activated.
- If you turn off the camera or store the lens and then turn off the LED light, the lighting status will not be remembered.
- Turning on the LED light consumes more battery power, reducing the number of shots and video recording time compared to when it is off.
- When the hood is attached, the LED light may be obscured, so be careful not to forget to turn it off.
- Do not change the LED light status after half-pressing the shutter button and then shoot. Because the exposure is fixed when the shutter button is half-pressed, changing the LED light status afterward may result in non-standard exposure.
- *This may vary depending on the camera's metering and AF settings. For details, please refer to your camera's user manual.
