The AFC-600 is UL listed per Standards 864 (Fire) and 1076 (Burglary). It meets NFPA 72 Local, Auxiliary, Remote Station, Proprietary, and Emergency Voice/Alarm Fire System Requirements. Other agencies and file numbers are listed on the first page of the catalog sheet.
Approvals include: UL, ULC, FM, MEA (447-99-E), California State Fire Marshal (7165-0028:203, 7170-0028:204).
System Block Diagram
The System Block Diagram illustrates the connectivity of the AFC-600. It shows two SLC Intelligent Loops, each supporting multiple devices (e.g., Photoelectric, Ionization, Thermal detectors, Manual stations, Monitor modules). These loops connect to the IDC (Initiating Device Circuit) ports. The diagram also shows connections for Relay Contacts, NAC (Notification Appliance Circuits), and RS-485 communication. Various peripherals are depicted, including up to 32 remote displays (e.g., LCD-80), annunciators (e.g., ACM-8R, LDM-32 Custom Graphics), a printer, and terminals (RS-232 Terminal, CRT-2 Terminal). The system can also connect to a dual phone line for a central station. The diagram highlights the AFC-600 unit itself, potentially shown within a CAB-C3 cabinet with a voice alarm system.
The CPU-600
The CPU-600 is the central processing unit for the AFC-600. It features an EIA-232 printer port, EIA-232 terminal port, and EIA-485 ports for communication. It includes SLC Loop #1 and SLC Loop #2 ports, supporting Style 4, 6, or 7. The unit has FLASH memory. A slide-in label provides legends for the various controls and indicators. The front panel includes an 80-character (2 x 40) back-lit LCD display, status LEDs, and membrane control switches for functions like Acknowledge/Step, Silence, Evacuate, System Reset, and Lamp Test. A flip-down door covers the programming keypad, which is a full QWERTY keyboard.
The MPS-6 Main Power Supply
The MPS-6 Main Power Supply provides the necessary power for the AFC-600 system. It features AC power inputs (TB1), a 24V battery input, and a 1.25 A resettable power output (TB2). It includes four relay outputs (TB3 – TB6) and four NAC/Releasing Circuits (TB7 – TB10). A jumper is present to remove for 240 VAC operation.
FlashScan® Exclusive New World-Leading Detector Protocol
The AFC-600 utilizes a new detection device protocol called FlashScan® (U.S. Patent 5,539,389). This protocol operates over five times faster than the previous Classic Loop Interface Protocol (CLIP), offering superior precision and high noise immunity. It supports mixing FlashScan® and CLIP devices for retrofit applications. This high speed enables the AFC-600 to support a large device capacity of 318 points per loop, with each device sampled in less than one second. Microprocessor-based FlashScan® detectors feature bicolor LEDs for diagnostic information, such as device address during Walk Test.
AWACS™™ Advanced Warning Addressable Combustion Sensing
AWACS™™ is a suite of software algorithms providing industry-leading smoke detection capability for the AFC-600. These algorithms perform complex calculations on each detector reading, enabled by the high-speed microcomputer. Key features include:
- Drift Compensation and Smoothing: Allows detectors to maintain original smoke detection ability and resist false alarms as dirt accumulates. It automates periodic sensitivity measurements required by NFPA Standard 72 and uses smoothing filters to remove transient noise. The accompanying graph shows analog reading over time, illustrating the effect of compensation and smoothing.
- Maintenance Warnings: Provides three warning levels (Low Chamber value, Maintenance Alert, Maintenance Urgent) when drift compensation indicates potential compromise due to dust accumulation. The accompanying diagram shows acceptable range, maintenance alerts, and dirty detector status.
- Sensitivity Adjust: Offers nine sensitivity levels for alarm detection, which can be set manually or automatically adjusted between day and night. Nine levels of pre-alarm sensitivity are also available.
- Self-Optimizing Pre-Alarm: Detectors can learn their normal environment and set pre-alarm levels just above peak readings. The accompanying graph illustrates pre-alarm and normal thresholds over time.
- Cooperating Multi-Detector Sensing: A patented feature where smoke sensors consider readings from nearby sensors to make alarm decisions, increasing sensitivity to actual smoke without sacrificing false alarm resistance. The accompanying graph shows combined sensor readings.
Field Programming Options
Autoprogram
Autoprogram is a timesaving feature that automatically loads connected devices into the AFC-600 program with default values. It runs in under 30 seconds, allowing for immediate fire protection in new installations. It identifies all intelligent detectors and modules, presenting them for installer editing. It skips devices already present in memory.
Keypad Program Edit
The AFC-600 allows full program creation and editing directly from the front panel keypad, maintaining fire protection during the process. Each point has its own program, including control-by-event links. This feature avoids system shutdown and the need for an on-site PC for minor changes. The site-specific program is password-protected and stored in nonvolatile memory, with menu trees guiding the installer.
VeriFire™™
VeriFire™ is an off-line programming and test utility designed to reduce installation programming time and increase confidence. It is Windows®-based and allows installers to create, test, and store the entire program for the AFC-600 before downloading it to the panel. The utility includes error checks for common programming mistakes and a simulation routine to verify I/O links, potentially reducing extensive on-site testing. A compare routine highlights differences between program versions, aiding in reacceptance testing.
