Icom BC-160 Desktop Charger Instructions and Safety Precautions

Icom DESKTOP CHARGER BC-160

INSTRUCTIONS

Thank you for purchasing the Icom BC-160 Desktop Charger. The BC-160 charges a Li-ion battery pack in approximately 1.5-3.5 hours. Please read these instructions thoroughly before using the BC-160.

PRECAUTIONS

  • [DANGER] Charge specified Icom batteries only. The charger has been tested and approved for use with only genuine Icom batteries. Fire and/or explosion may occur when trying to charge a third party or counterfeit battery pack.
  • [DANGER] NEVER incinerate a used battery pack since internal battery gas may cause it to rupture, or may cause an explosion.
  • [CAUTION] USE INDOORS ONLY! NEVER expose the charger to rain, snow or any liquids.
  • [WARNING] NEVER attempt to charge Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries. The BC-160 charges Li-ion batteries only.
  • [WARNING] NEVER attempt to charge alkaline or dry cell batteries. They may burst causing damage and personal injury.
  • [WARNING] NEVER disassemble the charger. Incorrect reassembly may result in a fire hazard or electric shock.
  • [WARNING] NEVER let metal, wire, and so on touch any internal part of the charger.
  • [CAUTION] NEVER insert a battery pack or a transceiver (with the battery pack attached) in a wet or soiled condition into the charger. This may result in corrosion of the charger terminals or damage to the charger. The charger is not waterproof and water can easily get into it.
  • [CAUTION] NEVER use the charger when it is covered by objects which impede heat dispersal.
  • Place the charger in a secure place to avoid inadvertent use by children.
  • [DO NOT] charge in conditions of extreme cold (under 0°C; +32°F) or extreme heat (over +45°C; +113°F). Batteries may not charge under extreme temperatures.
  • Keep the charger away from TV sets or radios to prevent interference.
  • SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. These instructions contain important safety and operating details for the BC-160.

Make sure battery and charger contacts are always clean, otherwise batteries may not fully charge.

If your batteries seem to have no capacity even after being fully charged, charge them again. If they still do not retain a charge (or very little), new batteries must be purchased.

BATTERY PACK CHARGING

The charging process involves connecting a battery pack to the charger. The charger can be powered by an AC adapter (not supplied with some versions) or an optional power source.

Diagram Description: The diagram shows three connection scenarios:

  • AC adapter: Illustrates the AC adapter connected to the charger.
  • Battery pack only: Shows a battery pack inserted into the charger.
  • Battery pack with transceiver: Depicts a battery pack attached to a transceiver, with the combined unit inserted into the charger.

Optional Power Sources: The optional OPC-515L (for power source) or CP-23L (for 12 V cigarette lighter socket) can be used instead of the AC adapter.

[CAUTION] NEVER connect the OPC-515L to a power source using reverse polarity. This will ruin the battery charger.

Polarity Indicators:

  • White line: [plus symbol] (+)
  • Black line: [minus symbol] (-)

IMPORTANT! Ensure the guide tabs on the battery pack are correctly aligned with the guide rails in the charger for proper insertion.

Diagram Description (Insertion): A close-up shows a battery pack with guide tabs aligning with guide rails inside the charger. An instruction indicates to "Turn OFF the power" before insertion.

Approximate charging time

  • BP-230/N: 1.5 hours
  • BP-231: 2 hours
  • BP-232/N: 3 hours
  • BP-232H/WP: 3.5 hours

LED indication

  • Orange: Lights while rapid charging
  • Green: Lights when charging is completed
  • Red (blink): The inserted battery pack or the charger has a problem.

*When the LED indicator does not light, even after a battery pack is inserted properly, the battery pack may have a problem.
