Safety Precautions
General Safety: Always follow accident prevention regulations. Read the entire manual before first use and keep it for future reference. Adhere to the operating and maintenance instructions for the combustion engine. User is responsible for accidents involving third parties.
Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear hearing protection and safety glasses during operation. Wear sturdy gloves, secure long hair, and avoid loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in moving parts.
Operation: Use the scarifier only when physically and mentally fit. Do not operate after consuming alcohol, drugs, or medication that impairs reactivity. Ensure the user is of legal age or has received appropriate training.
Product Use: The STIHL RL 540 is designed exclusively for scarifying lawns. Any other use is prohibited and may be dangerous or damage the unit. It is intended for private use.
Accident Prevention: Do not use the scarifier for trimming hedges, cutting plants, or as a vacuum/blower. Avoid using on paved or gravel surfaces where ejected material could cause injury. Clear the work area of stones, sticks, and other foreign objects. Do not operate on wet surfaces or in the rain. Start the engine only in well-ventilated areas.
Fueling: Use only approved fuel containers. Never refuel near open flames or sparks. Refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool. Do not overfill the fuel tank. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately.
Transport: Never transport the scarifier with the engine running. Before transport, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug, and ensure the scarifier unit is in the transport position. Secure the unit during transport.
Maintenance: Always disconnect the spark plug before performing any maintenance or cleaning. Refer to the manual for specific maintenance procedures. Use only genuine STIHL parts.
Storage: Store the scarifier in a dry, locked area, out of reach of children. Clean the unit thoroughly before storage, especially for winterization.
Disposal: Dispose of the scarifier and consumables according to local regulations.

Assembly and Preparation
Handle Assembly: Assemble the upper and lower parts of the handle using the provided screws and adjusting nuts. Attach the control cables to the cable guides.

Fuel and Oil: Consult the engine manual for the correct type and quantity of fuel and oil. Ensure the oil level is correct before starting.
Scarifying Unit Adjustment: The scarifying unit can be adjusted to different working depths. Always ensure the unit is in the transport position before making adjustments.
Operation
Starting the Engine: Ensure the scarifying unit is in the transport position. Engage the engine stop control lever against the handle. Pull the starter cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull sharply. Repeat until the engine starts. Allow the engine to run at optimal speed.
Scarifying: Lower the scarifying unit to the working position. Guide the scarifier evenly across the lawn. Adjust the working depth as needed. Avoid prolonged operation in one spot. If the lawn is very dense, a second pass diagonally may be beneficial.
Stopping the Engine: Release the engine stop control lever. The engine and blades will stop after a short delay.
After Scarifying: Remove scarification debris. Fertilize the lawn and reseed any bare patches. Water the lawn.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
