Box Content
Each TruAudio Ghost In-wall speaker contains the following:
- Ghost In-wall speaker
- Ghost-style white paintable grill
- Angled 25° Wave Cone, plus one straight Wave Cone installed in speaker
- Cutout template
Choosing the Speaker Location
The Ghost In-wall speakers can be mounted either horizontally or vertically with almost identical performance.
Left and Right speaker placement
Place the Left and Right speakers on either side of the video screen. You should try to place the tweeters as close to ear level as possible (36" - 44" off the floor). Also keep the speakers 6 to 12 feet apart and at least 16" away from the wall. (Refer to Diagram 1 for placement illustration).
Diagram 1 Description: Illustrates optimal speaker placement in a room, showing left, right, and center speakers positioned relative to a screen. It indicates ear-level height (36"-44") and recommended spacing (6-12 ft apart, 16" from wall). Angled speaker placement at 25 degrees is also shown.
Center Channel Placement
Ideally, you want to place the center channel at the same level as the left and right speakers (36" to 44" from the floor). If you must place the center channel above or below the screen, keep the distance to a minimum between the left and right speakers. This will help maintain a more even sound between the three speakers.
Changing the Wave Cone
Each Ghost in-wall speaker comes with a straight Wave Cone installed and an additional angled Wave Cone set at 25°. These Wave Cones are designed to improve the front soundstage, addressing a common limitation of in-wall speakers.
The Straight Wave Cone is designed for Center Channel installation.
The angled Wave Cone is set at 25° for left and right installations.
To change the Wave Cone:
- First, remove the four outer screws (Refer to Diagram 3).
- Before removing the Wave Cone, you will also need to remove the three screws around the tweeter (Refer to Diagram 2).
Now pull the tweeter off the Wave Cone and set it aside, being very careful not to damage the tweeter. Do not disconnect the wires on the tweeter.
Remove the old Wave Cone from the front of the speaker and replace it with the new Wave Cone. Secure the new Wave Cone with the four screws and place the tweeter back on the Cone. There are different screw holes for the tweeter on the angled and straight Wave Cones. Make sure that the tweeter sits properly into place with the tabs on the Wave Cone before fastening the tweeter screws (Refer to Diagram 3).
⚠️ Be very careful with the tweeter to avoid any damage!
Diagram 2 Description: Shows the tweeter assembly, highlighting the screws that need to be removed to detach the tweeter from the wave cone.
Diagram 3 Description: Illustrates the process of removing the wave cone using four outer screws and then reattaching the tweeter to the new wave cone, noting the different screw hole positions for straight and angled cones.
Now the speaker is ready to be installed into the wall.
Installation
Preparation before Speaker Installation
If the home was pre-wired for speakers during construction, TruAudio rough-in kits may have been used at each speaker location. Speaker cable should be present at these locations.
After the drywall is installed and the hole is cut, the speaker is easily installed. Once the hole is cut in the drywall, the pre-wired speaker cable should be accessible near the hole. If rough-in speaker rings were used, proceed to "Speaker Installation".
If the speaker hole has not been cut from the drywall, follow these instructions:
- Find the location where the speaker wire was pre-wired.
- Check the area for obstructions such as plumbing, heating ducts, or electrical wiring.
- Locate the wood studs or joists nearest the desired location and ensure they will not interfere with speaker placement.
- Use the supplied speaker cutout template to determine the recommended hole dimension for the speaker.
- Position the cutout in the desired location and outline the speaker opening to be cut.
- If you are unsure about potential obstructions, cut a small hole in the center of your outline to check.
- If there are no obstructions, proceed to cut the outlined hole. The speaker cable should now be visible. Pull the cable through the hole.
If the wall is not insulated, TruAudio suggests using the TruAudio model FE-24 in-wall foam enclosure to greatly improve the speakers' sound. Other options for sound dampening material include typical insulation or Dacron. If using material with a foil layer, position the foil away from the speaker magnet.
Speaker Installation
These speakers are mono, requiring two speakers for stereo sound: one for the right channel and one for the left. Ensure a two-conductor speaker cable is pre-wired to each speaker location.
Find each speaker cable and pull it through the cut speaker holes.
Remove the speaker from its box and inspect for any damage. If damage is found, contact TruAudio immediately at 888-858-1555.
Backbox Option
The Ghost In-wall series speakers offer optional backboxes (part number BB-GW6 for GPW-6 speakers, or part number BB-GW8 for GPW-8 speakers) that can be purchased separately. If using backboxes, attach them to the speakers now, following the instructions provided with the backbox.
Preparing the speaker cable
Once the speaker cable is located, prepare it for connection. Strip back the outside insulation to expose the individual conductors. Depending on the cable, there should be two or four separate conductors. Strip back the insulation on each conductor to show approximately 3/8" of bare copper wire.
Push down each post and insert the speaker cable. The posts are located on the back of the speaker on the crossover. Ensure only bare wire touches the speaker post once it slides into place. All TruAudio products feature gold push binding posts for easy and reliable speaker signal connection.
⚠️ Caution: Make sure to observe polarity. Connect R + (positive) from the amplifier or volume control to the speaker's R + terminal, and R - (negative) to the R - terminal. Repeat for the left channel.
When connecting the other end of the speaker cable to the amplifier or receiver, ensure the same polarity is observed as at the speaker connection.
To prepare the speaker for installation, turn all mounting toggles (dog ears) inward toward the speaker frame. This allows the speaker to fit easily into the precut hole. Insert the speaker into the hole (with the speaker cable connected), ensuring the cable remains connected. Carefully tuck the speaker cable into the hole as you position the speaker. Hold it in place with one hand and, with the other hand, carefully tighten the mounting screws evenly to secure the speaker. As you tighten the screws, the dog ears will flip into position to grip the drywall. DO NOT over-tighten the mounting screws, as this can damage the mounting toggle and prevent the speaker from staying in place securely.
Diagram 4 Description: Shows the speaker being inserted into the wall cutout, with mounting toggles (dog ears) ready to engage the drywall. It also depicts the speaker cable connection.
Adjust the Level Control
Some Ghost series models feature a level control to adjust high and low output. If your speaker has this functionality, the switches are located on the front face of the speaker.
You can adjust these controls to fine-tune high-frequency and bass response. Adjust the switch for each setting until you achieve the desired amount of high frequency, then repeat for bass. TruAudio suggests starting at -3dB and then increasing or decreasing the level as needed. The available adjustments are -6dB, -3dB, and 0dB.
Grill Installation
Remove the grill from its packaging and install it onto the speaker. Align the grill's edges with the outer edge of the speaker. The magnets will attach the grill to the speaker. Gently push the grill into place, ensuring it sits evenly all the way around.
Painting the Grills
It is recommended to paint the grills before installation. This is an advantage of the Ghost series speakers, as only the grill needs painting, not the speaker itself. The frameless design saves labor, allowing the grill to be painted beforehand and ready for installation simultaneously with the speakers.
When painting the grills, it is very IMPORTANT to remove the cloth-like material (Dacron) before painting. Apply paint lightly to avoid clogging the holes. Depending on the paint thickness, thinning it slightly may help prevent clogging. Using a spray paint that matches the desired finish is also suggested. Do not paint the grill while it is attached to the speaker; paint them separately.
