Installation Steps

Before beginning, consult your vehicle's manual and visit yakimatech.com to identify the specific hardware and base pads required for your vehicle.

Step 1: Clean the Roof

Thoroughly clean your vehicle's roof.

Step 2: Open Cover Plates

Open the cover-plates on your vehicle's roof. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual to determine how these plates are opened or removed, as this varies by vehicle.

Step 3: Prepare Threads

Ensure the mounting threads in the roof are clear of paint. Carefully thread the fastener in and out of the hole a few times, blowing away any accumulated debris.

Note: If multiple holes are present in the front pocket, use the forward-most holes. For rear pockets, use the rear-most holes to achieve maximum crossbar spread.

Note: Some vehicles have a plug in the threads that must be removed.

Step 4: Attach Pads to Bases

Attach each pad to its corresponding base.

Step 5: Position Landing Pads

Place each Landing Pad over the roof pocket, ensuring the arrows face away from the middle of your vehicle. Use the correct pads and hardware to avoid vehicle damage.

Warning: BE SURE TO USE THE CORRECT PADS AND HARDWARE TO AVOID VEHICLE DAMAGE!

Step 6: Install Washers

Install the metal washer onto each bolt with the concave side facing up.

Note: Concave side up.

Step 7: Insert Fasteners

Using the 5mm hex wrench, guide the fastener with the washer through the Landing Pad and into the threaded mounting point in the roof.

Warning: DO NOT ALLOW EDGES OF PAD TO CURL UNDER!

Step 8: Adjust and Snug Pads

Jostle and rotate the Landing Pad in all directions to ensure it is snug, while still allowing a small amount of adjustment for final alignment. Tightening will occur in steps 9 through 12.

Step 9: Align Landing Pads for Towers

Adjust the position of the Landing Pads to allow the SkyLine or Control Towers to fully close. Then, carefully place a bar and towers assembly onto the landing pads, using your SkyLine or Control Tower instructions as a reference.

Step 10: Center and Attach Crossbars

Center the cross bars and attach the SkyLine or Control Towers to the crossbars according to their specific instructions.

[Diagram: Crossbars attached to towers.]

Step 11: Open Tower Cover

Open one SkyLine or Control Tower cover and lift it up while the opposite tower is still engaged.

Step 12: Tighten Landing Pads and Towers

While holding the SkyLine or Control Tower above the Landing Pad, fully tighten the Landing Pad bolt to 1.5 Nm (13.3 in lb) using the long end of the hex wrench.

Repeat this process for the other Landing Pads to ensure they haven't shifted.

Re-insert the SkyLine or Control Tower into the Landing Pad, fully tighten the tower (refer to tower instructions), and close the cover.

Warning: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN AS DAMAGE TO THE ROOF MAY OCCUR.

Step 13: Install Covers

Install covers when the rack is not attached. Using the covers will help keep the bases free of debris.

Important Warnings and Safety

General Safety:

  • Ensure all hardware is securely fastened according to instructions. Failure to perform safety checks before driving can result in property damage, personal injury, or death.
  • Attachment hardware can loosen over time. Check and tighten if necessary before each use.
  • To avoid damage to your vehicle's finish, periodically remove and clean Landing Pads and mounting points, as road sediment can accumulate over time.
  • Make sure SkyLine or Control Towers, with bars installed, seat completely with the Landing Pad. If they do not seat properly, repeat steps 9-12.

Load Limits:

  • DO NOT EXCEED MAXIMUM WEIGHT LIMIT FOR YOUR VEHICLE.
  • To review your vehicle's specific weight limit and load limitations for accessories, visit yakimatech.com.

Product Care:

  • The accessory rack should be carefully cleaned and maintained, especially during winter. Use only water and standard car wash liquid without alcohol, bleach, or ammonium additives.
  • For fuel economy and safety, remove the accessory rack and roof rack when not in use.
  • Periodically inspect accessory racks for damage. Replace lost, damaged, or worn parts with original spare parts obtained from a stocking specialist, dealer, or manufacturer.
  • Any modifications to roof racks or accessories, or the use of non-manufacturer-supplied parts, will void the warranty and liability. Always follow instructions and use original parts.

Key Replacement: To replace lost or defective keys, note the lock and key numbers and register them at yakima.com.
