Garmin aera® 796/795

Portable Touchscreen GPS Navigator for Aviation

3D Meets Portability in the New aera® of Large-Format Touchscreens

The Garmin aera® 796 offers a breakthrough in carry-on GPS navigation with its unique 3D Vision perspective view imagery of database-generated flight terrain. This dedicated aviation device features a large 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display, making it Garmin's most visionary portable yet. Viewable in portrait or landscape orientation, the aera's "virtual reality" flight graphics can be framed with GPS-derived indications of ground track, altitude, groundspeed, vertical speed, and turn indication.

Pre-loaded content includes Geo-referenced FliteCharts®, AeroNav™ IFR Enroute and VFR Sectional charts, SafeTaxi® diagrams, low and high altitude airways, and AOPA Airport Directory data. A built-in digital document viewer expands its utility as an electronic flight bag (EFB), allowing users to load and view PDF documents, JPEG photos, and other electronically formatted materials like checklists and performance data from aircraft flight manuals.

The device also features a convenient scratch pad for writing down clearances or other important notes. For pilots navigating to specific ground locations or addresses, optional City Navigator® mapping allows searching and locating surface addresses for flight plan waypoints or direct-to navigation. For those preferring the Jeppesen format, an electronic ChartView™ enablement option (subscription required) provides global charting capabilities. The aera 796 is also optionally available with an AC-U-KWIK international database for airport directory information worldwide.

Situational Awareness Made Simple

The aera 796's physical design enhances ease-of-use and adaptability in the cockpit. It fits most aircraft yokes or can be used as a knee-mounted device. Four touchkeys on the bezel provide quick access to "Back", "Menu", "Direct-To", and "Nearest" functions. The customizable menu allows users to anchor favorite features or pages as icons on the screen for faster access.

The touchscreen interface allows quick map panning and "pinch zoom" for magnifying or downscaling map detail. Users can also rotate the 3D Vision vantage point around the aircraft with a flick of a finger. The terrain-alerting database colorizes the landscape with amber or red overlays to highlight potential flight-into-terrain risks. Towers and obstacles are color-highlighted with height-appropriate symbology. The aera 796 can also display TIS (traffic information service) alerts via connection to a compatible traffic source, such as Garmin's GTX 330 Mode S transponder.

The aera 796 features a convenient scratch pad for writing down clearances or other notes.

Enhanced Connectivity

A second serial port provides increased ability to connect and communicate with external cockpit systems. Pilots can display traffic information or send frequencies to a Garmin SL30 or SL40 VHF radio while simultaneously sending position information or other data to select onboard systems.

The included GXM 40 Smart Antenna (for the aera 796) provides North American customers access to datalinked NEXRAD imagery and XM WX® satellite weather capabilities, plus SiriusXM™ satellite radio audio programming. The GXM 40 is powered via USB from the aera 796, simplifying setup. For users outside XM coverage areas, the aera 795 model offers the same functionality without XM capabilities.

Go Paperless

Electronic flight bag functions support a paperless cockpit. Features include:

The touchscreen interface includes a handy "pinch zoom" feature for quick magnification or downscaling of graphical detail.
