Overview
The Arista CCS-720XPM series is designed for interconnected IoT-enabled campuses, delivering wirespeed connectivity for all campus user workloads managed by Arista's cognitive campus services. These switches support MACsec on all ports and offer versatile connection options for desktops, PoE appliances, and IoT devices. Managed 802.3af/at/bt power services provide up to 90W per RJ45 port at speeds from 10Mbps to 1Gbps. 25G and 10G uplinks provide flexibility and scalability for network design.
Arista's common binary EOS provides a comprehensive, standards-based Layer 2 and Layer 3 feature set, including EVPN virtualization and QoS services. EOS supports 802.1X access control and LLDP device identification for automated admission and segmentation of users, appliances, and mission-critical applications. Arista's switching and WiFi platforms are managed via a single Cognitive Campus management plane in CloudVision, offering real-time telemetry, database archival, and automated analytics.

Cognitive Campus
The Cognitive Management Plane (CMP) within Arista's EOS provides rich control and telemetry APIs to simplify and automate campus infrastructure deployment and maintenance. It offers real-time monitoring of campus users, applications, and devices. EOS supports auto-provisioning via Arista Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) for simplified device administration through CloudVision or DevOps toolsets. EOS CMP also delivers real-time telemetry using open gRPC/gNMI APIs within OpenConfig.
Arista EOS
The Arista 720XPM series runs Arista EOS, a modular switch operating system with a state-sharing architecture that separates switch state from protocol processing and application logic. Built on a Linux kernel, EOS processes run in protected memory and exchange state via an in-memory database, enabling in-service software updates and self-healing resiliency. EOS supports advanced monitoring and automation capabilities like Zero Touch Provisioning, VMTracer, and Linux-based tools.
FlowTracker and CloudVision
The CCS-720's FlowTracker hardware telemetry feature (IPFIX) provides real-time updates on device state, performance statistics, and application flows without burdening system functions. It can track over a thousand unique flows concurrently, scaling to 32K flows, and supports device fingerprinting for identifying device type, OS, and user ID, aiding security audits and segmentation.
Arista's CloudVision leverages this telemetry to track application, user, and device activity, measuring throughput and latency. CloudVision Device Analyzer helps baseline real-time traffic and alert administrators to performance or security outliers.

Customizable Topologies for Optimized Performance
Arista CCS-720 switches support open, standards-based L2 MLAG and L3 ECMP load balancing features for high availability and load sharing. The Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB) feature optimizes network utilization by dynamically tracking flow volumes and rebalancing them across shared links, interoperating with other networking platforms.
The 720XPM series utilizes standard RJ45, SFP+, and SFP25 interfaces for closet and uplink connections. It supports a variety of SFP25 and SFP+ copper and fiber modules for speeds from 1Gb to 25Gb, including 10G/25G multi-rate SFP optics that allow investment in 25Gb while maintaining compatibility with 10Gb infrastructure, simplifying campus migrations.
Diagram: Illustrates network topology options including Campus Spline/BDF, MLAG Pair, Leaf/IDF, and IoT device connections, showing high availability and load balancing configurations.
Cognitive Segmentation
The CCS-720 series supports industry-standard 802.1X and RADIUS authentication schemes, enabling automatic segmentation of authorized users and devices into assigned 802.1Q or EVPN VXLAN networks for enhanced security. Wire-speed Layer 3 VRF segmentation is also supported, and the switches facilitate WiFi segmentation through hardware-based VXLAN de-encapsulation.
CloudVision Management
CloudVision is Arista's management plane solution for simplifying network operations. Its state-streaming architecture provides automated provisioning, change control, continuous compliance, real-time telemetry, predictive analytics, and orchestration. It serves as a single management platform across data center, campus, WiFi, multi-cloud, and routing interconnect use-cases, available as an on-premises appliance or a SaaS solution.
Integrated MACsec Encryption
The CCS-720 Series offers dataplane security via industry-standard MACsec encryption on all ports, protecting against snooping in zero-trust environments. All access and uplink ports support 256-bit MACsec encryption for secure communications between MACsec-capable devices, including Arista's WiFi access points and the campus core network. MACsec is a separately licensed feature per switch.
Cognitive PoE for Mission Critical Services
The CCS-720 series supports critical campus services with power efficiency, flexible options, and power prioritization. It offers 802.3af, at, and bt power options delivering 15-90W to RJ45 ports. Platinum-rated power supplies and low nominal consumption provide ample power for connected appliances and IoT devices. Administrators can choose 1050W or 2000W single or redundant AC power supply options for customized power allocation and redundancy.
Dynamic Power Management
Arista's technology provides enhanced, efficient, and reliable PoE delivery. Dynamic PoE management optimizes power budgeting and allocation based on priority settings, allowing administrators to support more devices cost-effectively. Load sharing Power Supplies enable sharing of PoE banks within a switch, and Persistent PoE ensures continuous power to connected devices even during PSE reboots. Cognitive campus monitoring tracks power configuration and utilization in real-time.
Arista Optics and Cables
The Arista 720XPM series supports a wide range of 1G, 10G, and 25G pluggable optics and cables. For detailed information on optical modules and minimum EOS Software release requirements, visit Arista Optics and Cables. Multi-rate 10G/25G optics facilitate easy migration from 10G to 25G without changes to existing fiber cable plants.
EOS Licensing
Arista 720XPM Series with EOS and CloudVision offers flexible feature functionality and consumption models. Base EOS features are bundled, with optional feature licenses available for advanced functionality. Licensing options include perpetual terms and monthly subscriptions for CloudVision.
- Routing: EOS Enhanced (E) license includes BGP, OSPF, Multicast, etc. EOS Flex-route (FLX) Lite adds BGP-EVPN for VXLAN.
- Automation/Visibility: CloudVision offers comprehensive automation and visibility, with CloudVision Lite available for entry-level GUI functionality. It can be deployed on-premises or as a SaaS application.
- EOS V2: Enables custom extensions, containers, and integration with Arista's ecosystem for security, analytics, and visibility.
Campus Overlay Scale
The CCS-720 series utilizes virtualization features to provide hundreds of segmented networks for thousands of users and devices. It supports 802.1Q VLANs and VXLAN overlay networks with CVX and EVPN control.
