2.4 Recommendations

[Danger!] Failure to comply with the instructions in this section can cause serious or fatal injuries!

The fall arrest device must be used in conjunction with the elements of the Söll GlideLoc® system as described in the preceding section "Compatibility."

Safety Notes

[Info:] Pay maximum attention to the lower part of the fall arrest system. Within the first 2m of the ascent path, pay particular attention during ascent and descent, as it may not be possible to prevent the user from hitting the ground. A vertical safety distance of at least 3.0 m between users is mandatory.

2.5 Warning

[Warning:] The fall arrest system and full body harness secure users against falls during ascent or descent. When working on or next to the climbing path, or performing tasks not part of normal ascent/descent, the user must ensure their own safety (the user alone assumes the risk and responsibility for any resulting damage). This also applies when the user takes a break during climbing. For this purpose, the user must use a lanyard conforming to EN 354 ("Personal protective equipment against falls from height - Lanyards") or a work positioning lanyard compatible with "Personal protective equipment for work positioning and fall prevention - Work positioning and restraint harnesses and work positioning lanyards" EN 358. The choice of such a lanyard must consider the type of work and structure, and if necessary, be made in consultation with an expert. Suitable anchor points, such as mounting brackets, must be used for this purpose. In all these situations, the lanyard must be kept taut to prevent a fall (see Fig. 1).

Figure 1: Illustrates two configurations for fall arrest systems, one using EN 355 energy absorbers and another using both EN 355 energy absorbers and EN 358 work positioning lanyards.

3. Information for Use

3.1 Inserting at the Start of the Guide Rail

Insert the fall arrest device into the lower end of the guide rail (Fig. 2) or into the cavity (Fig. 3) (which must always be positioned at or below waist height). The laterally protruding safety pin (Pos. 1) must be on the right side, and the engraved arrow must point upwards.

The safety pin (Pos. 1) along with the end stop (Pos. 2) prevents incorrect use of the fall arrest device and unintended sliding from the guide rail.

Diagrams (Fig. 2 & 3) show the correct orientation and insertion of the Söll GlideLoc Universal II device into a guide rail, highlighting the safety pin (Pos. 1) and end stop (Pos. 2).

[Warning:] Crossing the end stop is permitted only:

3.2 Inserting in a Desired Position

After pulling the locking pin (5.0) of the energy absorber (2.0), it can be folded out, and the locking axis (1.7) can be rotated by 90°. Insertion into the guide rail occurs in the following order:

  1. Insert the front wheels into the guide rail (Fig. 4.1).
  2. Rotate the fall arrest device in the direction of travel (Fig. 4.2).
  3. Insert the fall arrest device into the guide rail (Fig. 4.3).
  4. Turn the locking axis (1.7) (Fig. 4.4).
  5. Lock the energy absorber (2.0) (Fig. 4.5).

Function Check After Insertion and Locking

[Checkmark:] OK

[Info:] The locking axle wheels (1.7) must be in the guide rail after insertion. The energy absorber (2.0) must be locked to prevent torsion of the locking axle (1.7).

[Warning:] When using the Söll® Universal II fall arrest device with a guide change above, the direction of travel is correct (arrow pointing up)! (Fig. 5).

Connecting to Harness

The self-closing fall arrest carabiner must be connected to the front D-ring/node marked "A" on the full body harness (see Fig. 6). To open the carabiner, rotate the gate to the left and push inwards.

[Warning: Risk of life!] The fall arrest carabiner must be connected directly to the sternal front fall arrest D-ring/node (marked "A") of the full body harness to ensure use in accordance with EN 353-1.

[Info:] It is absolutely forbidden to use carabiners of a different type than the original ones supplied!

The distance between the outer edge of the guide rail and the ring/node folded inwards on the harness must not exceed 220 mm.

Harness Fit

[Info:] The full body harness must fit snugly and securely to the body! If the harness loosens during ascent, it must be readjusted. During readjustment, the user must be in a secure position and secured with a lanyard as specified in 2.5. For further information, please refer to the user manual for the harness and/or lanyard.

3.3 Ready for Use

After inserting the fall arrest device and attaching it to the harness, the system is ready for use. To descend, unlock the fall arrest device by leaning backward. The upper body must remain in an upright position.

[Attention:] Before and during use, ensure the locking axis (1.7) is automatically pulled to the end stop in the housing by spring force.

3.4 Removing the Fall Arrest Device from the Guide Rail

[Warning:] Before removing the fall arrest device from the guide rail or detaching it from the harness, users must be secured and protected against falls from height by other means!

To remove the fall arrest device at the end of the guide rail, the end stop must be overcome (Fig. 2, 3). To do this, the locking pin must be pulled backward or sideways, depending on the design. To remove the fall arrest device from the guide rail at any desired position, proceed in reverse order as described for insertion (section 3.2). For this, the locking pin (5.0) on the right side of the fall arrester must be pulled. Follow the relevant manual for accessories.

The fall arrest device must be removed from the guide rail after use.

3.5 Incorrect Use

[Warnings:] Any modifications or additions to the Söll® Comfort 2 fall arrest device without the manufacturer's written approval can impede the fall arrest device's correct functioning and are therefore prohibited.

Failure to use the sternal front D-ring/node of the fall arrest system can cause serious or fatal injuries.

3.6 Emergency Procedures

It is essential that the fall protection system operator has a rescue plan that considers all possible emergency situations, particularly the urgent need to evacuate an injured person.

4. Inspection and Maintenance

4.1 Post-Fall Inspection

The fall arrest device must be inspected by an authorized person or entity after a fall before it can be reused. Never use such a fall arrest device without written approval from an authorized person or entity.

Insufficiently performed inspections compromise the functionality and durability of the fall arrest device, thereby endangering user safety.

[Warning:] Inspections can only be performed by the manufacturer or an authorized person or entity. Authorization can be obtained through training courses and regular updates from the manufacturer. The received certificate is valid for 3 years and authorizes periodic inspections of Söll systems.

[Warning:] Inspections can only be performed by the manufacturer or an authorized person or entity.

4.4 Inspection (see 5.3)

An authorized person or entity is permitted to address the following defects:

In case of dirt inside the fall arrest device or if the device has defects requiring disassembly, it must be returned to the manufacturer (along with the relevant manual) for cleaning and repair. This process must be recorded in the checklist (space for comments).

[Info:] For safety reasons, repairs can only be carried out by the manufacturer or a person designated by them.

4.5 Cleaning

Wash the entire fall arrest device with water and dry with an absorbent cloth. Do not use heat sources for drying. Do not wash with quick-acting detergents, solvents, or degreasers containing trichloroethane. Do not use grease. The rollers (Fig. 8 / Pos. 3.0), bearings, and sliding parts have been lubricated at the factory. Lubricate the swivel bracket (Fig. 8 / Pos. 4.0) and carabiner entry (Fig. 8 / Pos. 6.1) lightly, if necessary.

[Attention:] Do not expose the fall arrest device to chemicals.

4.6 Service Life
