Before You Play

Selecting the Power Source

The Aerophone Pro can be powered by batteries or the included AC adaptor.

  • Using Batteries: Supports approx. 6 hours of playback with Ni-MH AA batteries. Battery life varies. Low battery indicator blinks orange. Handle the unit carefully when upside down. Improper battery handling can lead to explosion or leakage.
  • Using AC Adaptor: Allows continuous play without battery concerns. Connect the adaptor to the DC IN jack and use the cord hook. Note: The unit does not charge installed batteries; use a separate charger.

Connecting Headphones or External Speakers

Turn down volume and power off all units before connecting to prevent damage. Connect headphones to the PHONES jack and external speakers to the OUTPUT jack.

Turning the Power On/Off

  • Turning On: Set the [▶️] switch to "ON". Power LED lights up. If external devices are connected, power them on and adjust volume after the Aerophone Pro is on.
  • Turning Off: Set the [▶️] switch to "OFF". External devices should be turned off first. The unit has an Auto Off function which can be disabled (p. 20). Unsaved data is lost when power is turned off.

Adjusting the Volume

Overall volume can be adjusted via the menu for built-in speakers ("Speaker Volume") or for headphones/external speakers ("Output Volume").

Performing

Holding the Aerophone Pro

Hold the unit as shown, placing the left thumb on the thumb rest and the right thumb under the thumb hook. A neck strap can be attached for support.

Embouchure

Hold the mouthpiece lightly between your upper teeth and lower lip, and blow. Tonguing and bite pressure can control expression and pitch.

Selecting the Key in Which to Play

Use the [TRANSPOSE] knob to shift the pitch in semitone steps. The behavior depends on the "Transpose Mode" system setting (System or Scene).

Pressing the Performance Keys

Fingering is similar to a saxophone. Refer to the "Aerophone Pro Parameter Guide" (PDF) for detailed fingering charts. Be careful not to lay the unit down with the keys facing down, as this may cause keys to stick.

Making Sound Settings

Overview

Sounds are structured as Tones (composed of up to four Parts), which are combined into Scenes. System settings affect the entire unit, while Scene settings are specific to each scene.

  • Tone: A sound assigned to a part, editable for oscillator, filter, and effects.
  • Part: Assigns tones to one of four parts, with pan and EQ settings. SuperNATURAL and drum tones are typically assigned to Part 1 only.
  • Scene: Saves all performance settings, including part settings, common effects (reverb, delay, chorus), controller assignments, and MIDI settings. Scenes can be saved into user banks (up to 600 scenes total) and registered as Favorites (up to 12).
  • System Settings: Unit-wide configurations like assignments and MIDI control.

SuperNATURAL Sounds: Roland's proprietary sounds using Behavior Modeling Technology for realistic expression.

The [SCENE CATEGORY] knob is used to switch between preset categories, user banks, and favorites.

Playing the Internal Sounds (PRESET SCENE)

Turn the [SCENE CATEGORY] knob to select a sound category, then use the [SCENE] (▲/▼) buttons to select a scene within that category.

Editing the Sound to Your Taste (USER SCENE)

Preset scenes can be edited and saved as user scenes, primarily using the "Aerophone Pro Editor" app.

Storing a User Scene

Scenes can be saved into 12 user banks, each holding 50 scenes, for a total of 600 user scenes. This is done via the MENU system, selecting "Write Scene" and then "User".

Instantly Recalling Sounds (FAVORITE SCENE)

Up to 12 favorite scenes (preset or user) can be registered for quick recall. Register favorites via the MENU system by selecting "Write Scene" and then "Favorite". The [SCENE CATEGORY] knob can be configured to switch favorites directly.

Clearing All User Scenes

User scenes can be reset to factory defaults via the MENU system by selecting "User Scene Clear".

Using the Aerophone Pro with a Computer or Smartphone

Using the Aerophone Pro with a Smartphone

Connect wirelessly via Bluetooth to perform along with songs or use the "Aerophone Pro Editor" app.

Setting Procedure: Pairing

Pairing is required for Bluetooth audio and app connectivity. The process differs for each.

  • Performing Along with a Song: Pair the unit with your smartphone for Bluetooth audio input.
  • Using the App: Pair the unit with your smartphone for app control.

Pairing Steps (Example for iPhone):

  1. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on the Aerophone Pro (MENU > Bluetooth > On).
  2. Initiate "BT Audio Pairing" from the Aerophone Pro's MENU.
  3. Turn on your smartphone's Bluetooth and select "AE-30 AUDIO" from the list of discovered devices.
  4. The unit and smartphone will pair. The display will show "Connected".

Playing Back Songs: Once paired, play music from your smartphone; the sound outputs through the Aerophone Pro's speakers or headphones. Smartphone volume controls the song volume.

Connecting an Already-Paired Smartphone: Simply turn on your smartphone's Bluetooth. If connection fails, re-select "AE-30 AUDIO" on the smartphone.

Using the Aerophone Pro with an App

Connect via Bluetooth to use the "Aerophone Pro Editor" app for editing sounds and remote control. Apps are available on the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android).

Using the Aerophone Pro with Computer Software

Connect via USB cable to a computer for recording audio/MIDI with a DAW or controlling software synthesizers. Ensure you use a data-transfer USB cable, not a charge-only cable. A USB driver must be installed; download it from the Roland website.

Making Settings in the Menu

The MENU button allows access to System, Scene, Assign, and MIDI control settings.

Making System Settings and Scene Settings

System Settings: Common to all scenes, saved automatically. Examples include Transpose Mode, Breath Curve, Output Volume, Bluetooth settings, Display Off Time, Auto Off, and Factory Reset.

  • Transpose Mode: System (uses knob value) or Scene (uses scene value).
  • Breath Curve: Adjusts response to breath pressure (L1-L3, M, H1-H3).
  • Output Volume: Sets output level for jacks.
  • Bluetooth: Turn on/off, set Bluetooth ID.
  • BT Audio Pairing: Initiates pairing for audio.
  • Display Off Time: Sets display auto-off duration.
  • Auto Off: Sets automatic power-off timer (can be disabled).
  • Factory Reset: Returns all settings to factory defaults.

Scene Settings: Specific to each scene, not auto-saved. Includes Scene Volume, Scene Transpose, Scene Octave Shift, and Assign Source (System or Scene assignments).

Assigning Functions to Controllers (ASSIGN)

Assign functions to controllers like buttons and thumb levers. Settings depend on the "Assign Source" (System or Scene).

Assigning a continuously-variable controller

For breath, bite, thumb lever, and thumb pads, you can specify:

  • Assign Function: The function to be controlled.
  • Input Min/Max Value: The range of the controller's input.
  • Output Min/Max Value: The range of the assigned function's output.
  • Mode: Momentary (continuous change) or Latch (toggle).
  • Curve: Defines the response curve (e.g., Linear, Exponential, Logarithmic) for Momentary mode.

Assigning a switch-type controller

For buttons like [S1]/[S2] and side keys:

  • Assign Function: The MIDI function to be assigned.
  • Release Value: Value when the button is released.
  • Press Value: Value when the button is pressed.
  • Mode: Momentary (Press Value active while pressed, Release Value when released) or Latch (toggles between Press and Release values).

Assigning MIDI Control to a Controller (MIDI CONTROL)

Assign MIDI control functions to controllers for external sound modules or DAWs. MIDI Control Mode can be toggled using the [MIDI CONTROL] switch.

MIDI Control Mode: Allows assigning MIDI functions separate from internal sounds, or transmitting scene-assigned MIDI messages. "MIDI Control Mode Sound Output" setting determines if internal sounds are heard simultaneously.

Appendix

Caring for the Aerophone Pro

  • Clean the mouthpiece with water if soiled; dry with a soft cloth.
  • When attaching the mouthpiece, ensure a snug fit. Using recorder cream can ease attachment/removal. Be mindful of orientation and internal screws.
  • Lean the unit upright against a wall to allow saliva to drain from the water drain. Wipe away any moisture.
