Prototype Information
The PIKO Vectron Dual Mode locomotive is a dual-power model, capable of operating via electric overhead lines or its diesel engine. Introduced by Siemens Mobility in 2019, this locomotive offers flexibility and resource-saving operation, especially on routes not fully electrified. The design incorporates a main transformer, made possible by reducing the diesel tank size.
PIKO offers the locomotive in two variants: the Vectron Dual Mode (BR 248 in Germany) and the Vectron Dual Mode light (BR 249). The BR 248 is equipped with an MTU diesel engine and has an axle load of 22.5 tons. The BR 249 features a smaller Cummins diesel engine and an axle load of 21 tons.
In 2020, DB Cargo entered into a framework agreement for up to 400 Dual Mode units to upgrade its locomotive fleet, with 150 units delivered to date.
Safety Notes
Disposal: This product is classified as Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE). It should not be disposed of with household waste. Model, Not a Toy: This is a model railway item, not a toy. Keep enclosed instructions and manual for future reference.
Caution: Due to its realistic and functional design, the model may have sharp edges. Improper use can lead to injury.
Transformer Requirements: The model must only be operated with an approved transformer.
- Alternating Current (AC): Max. driving voltage: 16 V~, Commutation tension: 24 V~
- Direct Current (DC): Max. driving voltage: 12 V=
Maintenance and Operation
Oiling: For frequent operation, oil the wheelsets with a drop of non-resinous, acid-free sewing machine oil. PIKO recommends:
- PIKO Loco-Oil (#56301, 50 ml)
- PIKO Precision engine oiler w fine dosage (#56300)
Break-in Procedure: To ensure optimal running and traction, it is advisable to run the locomotive in for approximately 25 minutes in each direction without load.
Rail Cleaning: For trouble-free operation, clean rails regularly. The model's smooth running is guaranteed only on clean rails.
PluX Interface Assignment
The PluX interface provides connections for various functions. Assignments may vary depending on the specific model version (*versionsabhängig / depending on version):
- AUX1 - Fan
- AUX4 - E-coupler front
- AUX5 - E-coupler rear
DC Version Note
For the DC version, radio interference suppression is ensured if the condenser typically fitted in the track connection section has a minimum capacity of 680 nanofarads (nF).
