Product Introduction
Overview
The AUTOOL SDT203 automotive diagnostic leak detector is designed for testing leaks in vehicle pipe systems. It can be used on all cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, light trucks, boats, etc.
Working Theory
Low oxygen combustion
The AUTOOL smoke leak detector employs a forced combustion smoke generation method in a low oxygen environment. It is energized by a conductive column to the heating wire, which rapidly heats up to over 300°C, causing the mineral oil to reach its ignition point and combust. Due to the limited airflow, insufficient oxygen is available for complete combustion, leading to combustion primarily on the heating wire's surface. High-temperature heating allows the mineral oil to continue burning insufficiently around the wire, producing a large amount of smoke.

Operations Instruction
Preparation Before Use
- Mount the Hook to the hook port (A) for carrying or hanging.
- Open the oil refill port (D), fill the reservoir with smoke oil. Ensure the oil level gauge (E) shows the oil is not more than 2cm above the bottom. Refill if the level is low.
[Note] If overfilled, turn the unit upside down to drain excess oil.
- The unit is now ready for use.
Smoke Test
- Mount the smoke hose to the smoke outlet (J) and the power cord to the power socket (K).
- Connect the power cord to a 12V vehicle battery.
[Note] Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal and the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the battery. Ensure the vehicle battery is fully charged for optimal performance. Do not use a DC12V switch power supply. Only 12V vehicle batteries are permitted.
- The power LED (G) will illuminate, and the unit will begin generating pressurized air.
- Press the start/stop button (F); the working cycle LED (H) will turn on. The unit will generate smoke for a 5-minute cycle, stopping automatically.
- To manually stop smoke generation during a cycle, press the start/stop button (F) again. Allow the unit to blow out residual smoke from the nozzle.
Generic Operation
- Turn off the vehicle's ignition. The engine must be off for leak testing.
- Dismantle the air filter and throttle connections.
- Clean the inner wall of the intake opening to remove sharp objects, then insert the universal intake adapter.
- Mount the smoke hose to the smoke outlet (J) and connect the power cord to the power socket (K).
- Connect the power cord to the 12V vehicle battery.
- The power LED (G) will be on, indicating pressurized air generation.
- Introduce the smoke nozzle into the system using the cone adapter.
- Wait 30 seconds for the system to pressurize, then check the pressure gauge (B) and flow meter (C) for leak status.
- Remove the smoke nozzle from the cone adapter. Press the start/stop button (F); the working cycle LED (H) will activate, and the unit will generate smoke for an automatic 5-minute cycle.
- Reinsert the smoke nozzle into the cone adapter when significant smoke is visible from the nozzle.
- The system will be ready for leak checking in 2 minutes. Use a bright light or working lamp for assistance.
- After the test, if the working cycle LED (H) is still on, press the start/stop button (F) again to stop smoke generation.
- Store the smoke hose and power cord using the velcro straps. Hang the unit or stand it upright; do not lay it flat.
[Note] Optional Cap Stoppers can be used to block openings for partial system tests or the intake opening, allowing the smoke nozzle to connect via other available openings.
Airbag Adapter Instructions
- Airbag adapters are suitable for non-circular connections. For round or oval ports, use the inlet tapered adapter.
- Before using the airbag adapter, clean the inner wall of the intake manifold or other test interfaces to prevent sharp protrusions from piercing the adapter.
- Insert the air bag (Z) into the test port.
- Press the hand pump (X) until the bladder (Z) inflates and seals the test port.
- Connect the cone head on the smoke outlet pipe to the smoke guide pipe (Y) to introduce smoke into the duct being tested.
- After testing, turn the pressure relief valve (W) counter-clockwise, remove the car air inlet adapter, clean it, and store it.
[Note] Airbag adapters must not contact corrosive oil.
Diagram description: The diagram shows components W (Pressure Relief Valve), X (Hand Pump), Y (Smoke Duct), and Z (Airbag).
Chemicals
- This unit uses paraffin wax, baby oil, or mineral oil as smoke oil, available at supermarkets or pharmacies.
- Use a needle-tip bottle or funnel to refill the smoke oil.
- If the smoke oil is overfilled, turn the unit upside down to drain excess oil.
- Drain and refill the oil every three months.
