Catalog Data: CA912006EN
Effective Date: August 2020 (Supersedes February 2020)
Description
This document details the hardware layout and functionality of the Eaton SMP IO-2230-A system, which is built upon the SMP IO-2230 distributed I/O platform. It serves as a robust RTU replacement solution.
RTU Upgrade Solutions
Eaton offers cost-effective solutions for upgrading legacy RTUs, emphasizing cybersecurity. These solutions are based on the utility-hardened Eaton SMP family of substation automation products, including the SMP SG-42xx automation platform and the SMP IO-2230 distributed I/O unit. This hardware-agnostic replacement solution supports most legacy RTU configurations and is adaptable to various deployment scenarios (e.g., GE D20). It significantly reduces field installation time and service interruptions by utilizing existing field wiring.
SMP Gateway Automation Platform
Eaton's SMP Gateway automation platform models are substation-grade gateways with a proven history in data acquisition and distribution automation. They function as data concentrators, protocol converters, and integration solutions for secure IED remote access, recognized for their efficiency and reliability in distributed automation applications.
SMP IO-2230 Distributed I/O Platform
The SMP IO-2230 represents Eaton's next generation of substation-grade distributed I/O platforms, designed for modern industry and utility requirements. It integrates seamlessly with the SMP Manager and Tools application for configuration and maintenance, and with SMP Gateway automation platforms, simplifying setup and commissioning. The platform uses the template-driven configuration tool, SMP Config, and incorporates advanced cybersecurity features to meet compliance requirements, including NERC CIP (certified under UL 2900-2-2).

Certifications and Compliancy Notes
The SMP IO-2230 platform, integrated into the chassis, is substation-grade and complies with several standards. Refer to the SMP IO-2230 platform Catalog Data (CA912004EN) for details. The chassis itself did not undergo tests for substation-grade compliancy.
Temperature Derating
Eaton provides a Microsoft Excel™ calculator tool to help customers calculate total power dissipation and operational maximum temperature based on specific SMP IO-2230-A configurations. The tool also assists in calculating resistor values for analog input current ranges. It can be downloaded from Eaton's website (Resources page for the SMP IO-2230 distributed I/O platform).
To comply with IEC 61010-1 certification, the SMP IO-2230-A can operate within a temperature range dependent on its total power dissipation. According to the standard, the unit supports operating temperatures between -40°C and +70°C.
