Vacuum Technology: Safe, Compact, and Reliable
Eaton vacuum interrupters utilize a ceramic cylinder housing a fixed and movable contact, with movement facilitated by a bellow under vacuum. A shield surrounding the contacts prevents insulator contamination from metal vapor produced during current interruption and ensures good potential distribution over the insulator. This technology results in very low arc voltage and short arc times, leading to minimal contact wear. Vacuum interrupters are maintenance-free and certified for up to 30,000 operation cycles.
Xiria: The Smart Solution
Xiria is Eaton's new generation of ring main units (RMUs) designed for applications up to 24 kV. They are characterized by high operational safety and a compact design. Xiria units are available in two-, three-, four-, or five-panel configurations. The primary parts and mechanisms are housed in a fully enclosed casing, protecting the system against environmental influences. Two basic panel versions are offered: a vacuum load break switch for ring cable connections and a vacuum circuit-breaker for protecting transformers and cable connections. Both versions can be combined in any desired order.
Xiria integrates modern safety features, such as a circuit-breaker combined with an electronic relay, providing a safe and flexible alternative to fuse protection. This design also facilitates easy integration into automated distribution networks, responding effectively to evolving electricity distribution requirements.
Maintenance-Free Operation
All live primary parts and mechanisms within a Xiria unit are housed in a sealed-for-life, fully enclosed casing. This design prevents dust, moisture, and other environmental factors from affecting operation. The switching mechanism features a minimal number of parts, engineered for reliable switching even after extended periods of inactivity. It requires no lubricants, further enhancing operational safety. This maintenance-free approach significantly reduces inspection and maintenance costs without compromising the operational safety of the distribution network.
Intrinsically Safe Design
Eaton prioritizes operational safety with unambiguous status indications. Xiria is fitted with directly visible isolation through inspection windows in the front, clearly displaying the isolating distance between the cable and the busbar system. Safe, short-circuit proof earthing is available via the load break switch or circuit-breaker. The fully enclosed metal housing, combined with single-phase insulation of all primary live parts, minimizes the risk of internal faults, ensuring a high degree of safety and availability. The KEMA-tested arc-proof housing offers additional protection for operating personnel.
The system components are: 1. Busbar system, 2. Busbar/earth disconnector, 3. Vacuum load break switch or circuit-breaker, 4. Voltage detector, 5. Cable connection.

Compact Design
Xiria is one of the most compact ring main units of its kind. This compactness is achieved through Eaton's integrated technologies, including electrical field control, solid insulation, and the use of extremely compact vacuum interrupters. This design offers direct financial benefits in new buildings and when refurbishing existing transformer stations due to the minimal floor area required.

Ready for Automated Networks
Xiria is designed for use in fully automated networks. Various modular options are available for remote signaling and remote control, which can be quickly and easily added in the future. This ensures Xiria anticipates future developments in automation and operational control, preventing obsolescence of control, display, and communication standards.

Clean and Green
Xiria is made exclusively of environmentally-friendly materials. The insulation medium is clean, dry air, and the switching medium is vacuum. This design responds to the demand for sustainability in energy distribution. The unit is easy to dismantle at the end of its service life, as the materials used are clearly labeled and can be reused, facilitating recycling and avoiding excessive costs and environmental taxes during decommissioning.

Applications
Xiria units can be used in compact transformer stations for energy distribution, in accessible stations for utilities and industry, and are ideal for decentralized power generation systems such as wind farms.
