PFAFF creative icon™ 2 Voice Control User's Guide

This guide provides instructions on how to set up and use the Voice Control feature for your PFAFF creative icon™ 2 sewing and embroidery machine with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Voice Control Overview

Voice Control allows you to send voice commands to your sewing and embroidery machine without using buttons. You can ask your machine for instructions, such as how to thread it or wind a bobbin. The creative icon™ 2 is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, enabling you to send voice commands through these devices or apps.

Setting up voice assistants can sometimes be complex. These instructions aim to guide you through the process smoothly. Please note that steps may vary based on your smart device and software version, and prior connection to Alexa or Google Assistant.

For setup assistance, visit the respective support websites for Alexa or Google Assistant. To begin using Voice Control, download the Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant app and follow the steps outlined below.

Important Information

The Voice Control feature is available only in countries where Alexa and/or Google are operational. Availability is managed by third-party suppliers and is subject to change.

The instructions provided are general descriptions and may include third-party supplier information. Availability, procedures, and functionality are subject to change or variation.

Voice Control can be used in any market where available. However, your language might not be supported by the Alexa and Google Assistant apps. If your language is not supported, you can use one of the languages listed below. Ensure your device and sewing machine are set to the same language to avoid misinterpretation of commands.

Note: Initially, the Voice Control feature will be available in English only. French, Spanish, and German support will be added later.

Supported Languages for Voice Commands:

  • Alexa: English, French, Spanish, German
  • Google Assistant: English, French, Spanish, German

Amazon Alexa Setup

Prepare Your creative icon™ 2

1. Turn on your creative icon™ 2 and select Sewing or Embroidery mode.

2. Connect your machine to your Wi-Fi network by tapping the Wi-Fi icon in the upper left corner of the machine screen and entering your Wi-Fi password.

3. Touch the mySewnet cloud icon (1) to log in to your mySewnet account (2). If you do not have a mySewnet account, create one (3) by visiting www.mysewnet.com.

Your machine must be connected to Wi-Fi and you must be signed into your mySewnet account.

Set Up Amazon Alexa

On Your Smart Device:

  • Download or open the Amazon Alexa app.
  • Create an Amazon Alexa account or log in to your existing account.

IMPORTANT: Ensure your smart device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your mySewnet account.

When logging into the Alexa app for the first time or creating a new account, you will be prompted to configure settings like Voice ID and grant access to Bluetooth and your microphone. Voice ID helps Alexa better recognize your voice and accent. Access to the microphone and Bluetooth is necessary for voice interaction. The Alexa app will guide you through these steps.

Tip: To enable hands-free communication with Alexa, tap the blue dot in the app before issuing commands. Alternatively, enable hands-free in the Alexa App Settings menu (More > Settings > Alexa App Settings).

Link mySewnet to Alexa

You can link your mySewnet account to your Alexa account via the amazon.com website or the Alexa app.

Using amazon.com:

  • Log in to mySewnet on your creative icon™ 2.
  • Scan the QR code provided. This will direct you to amazon.com and open the "mySewnet-skill".
  • Touch "Enable" to link the accounts. If you are not logged into your Amazon account, touch "Sign In" and enter your Amazon account details first.

Alexa will request access to mySewnet. Touch "Allow". If you are not signed into mySewnet, a mySewnet login screen will appear; enter your account details and touch "Sign In".

Once accounts are linked, you will receive a notification on your smart device. From the Alexa Home screen, say: "Alexa, ask creative icon 2 to connect". Once Alexa confirms the connection, you are ready to proceed.

Refer to the "How to Talk to creative icon™ 2" section for command examples. The list of available commands is continuously expanding.

Using the Alexa App:

  • Log in to mySewnet on your creative icon™ 2 and log in to the Alexa app. Ensure both accounts are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Find "Skills & Games" on the Home Screen or under the "More" menu.
  • Touch the magnifying glass icon and search for "mySewnet".
  • Select the mySewnet skill, identified by the sub-headline "Alexa, ask creative icon 2 to connect".
  • Touch "ENABLE TO USE" or "LAUNCH", then touch "SETTINGS".

Touch "Link Account". Alexa will then request access to mySewnet. Touch "Allow". If you are not signed into mySewnet, a mySewnet login screen will appear.

Once you see the account linking confirmation, you are ready to connect your machine. Touch "Close" to return to the Alexa Home screen. Say: "Alexa, ask creative icon 2 to connect". After Alexa confirms the connection, you are set.

Set Up Your creative icon™ 2 as a Smart Home Device

To use Alexa Smart Home commands, set up your creative icon™ 2 as a smart home device.

  1. In the Alexa app, open "Devices" (1).
  2. Touch the "+" icon (2).
  3. Touch "Add Device" (3).
  4. Scroll through the list of smart home devices and select "Other" (4).

Ensure your creative icon™ 2 is turned on and signed into mySewnet. Touch "DISCOVER DEVICES". Alexa will search for your creative icon™ 2 and notify you when it is found.

Touch "SET UP DEVICE" to connect your creative icon™ 2 to Alexa Smart Home. Alexa will confirm the setup, naming your creative icon™ 2 "Machine 1". Touch "DONE".

Give Your Machine a Nickname

You can assign a personal name to your machine, replacing the default "Machine 1", for use in smart home commands.

  1. Navigate to "Devices" in the Alexa app.
  2. Select "All Devices".
  3. Choose "Machine 1" from the list.
  4. Open "Settings".
  5. Touch "Edit Name".
  6. Enter your desired nickname for the machine.

Note: Changing the machine's name in the Alexa app does not alter the name on your creative icon™ 2 or in your mySewnet account.

Google Assistant Setup

Prepare Your creative icon™ 2

1. Turn on your creative icon™ 2 and select Sewing or Embroidery mode.

2. Connect your machine to your Wi-Fi network by tapping the Wi-Fi icon in the upper left corner of the machine screen and entering your Wi-Fi password.

3. Touch the mySewnet cloud icon (1) to log in to your mySewnet account (2). If you do not have a mySewnet account, create one (3) by visiting www.mysewnet.com.

Your machine must be connected to Wi-Fi and you must be signed into your mySewnet account.

Set Up Google Assistant

On Your Smart Device:

  • Download or open the Google Assistant app.
  • Create a Google account or log in to your existing account.

IMPORTANT: Ensure your smart device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your mySewnet account.

When logging into the Google Assistant app for the first time or creating an account, you will be asked to grant access to Bluetooth and your microphone. This access is necessary for voice interaction with Google Assistant.

Tip: For hands-free communication, say "Hey Google" followed by your question or command, without tapping the microphone icon in the app.

Link mySewnet and creative icon™ 2 to Google Assistant

Ensure you are signed into mySewnet on your creative icon™ 2 and into the Google Assistant app, with both accounts on the same Wi-Fi network.

To link your Google Assistant account to your mySewnet account:

  1. Say: "Hey Google, talk to mySewnet".
  2. Google Assistant will ask for permission to link accounts. Say: "Yes".
  3. Google Assistant will then request access from mySewnet. Log in to mySewnet from your smart device. You will need to allow sharing of your email address with mySewnet. Touch "Allow".

Once login is confirmed, the accounts are linked. Google Assistant will respond: "Welcome to mySewnet! What would you like to do?".

You can now issue commands. Refer to the "How to Talk to creative icon™ 2" section for command examples. The list of commands is continuously expanding.

How to Talk to creative icon™ 2

Note: For safety, use Voice Control only when you are within reach of your machine.

Follow these tips for efficient communication:

  • Ensure your device is not muted.
  • Speak clearly and calmly.
  • Position your device away from walls, other speakers, or background noise.
  • If a command is not executed, rephrase your question or command, or make it more specific.
  • Be patient; your creative icon™ 2 is still learning!

Activate Voice Control

Before Voice Control can be used, ensure your creative icon™ 2 is turned on.

Using Amazon Alexa:

  • Open the Alexa app (if not already open).
  • Say: "Alexa, open creative icon 2". Alexa will be active for approximately 30 seconds.

Using Google Assistant:

  • Open the Google Assistant app (if not already open).
  • Say: "Hey Google, talk to mySewnet". Google Assistant will respond: "Welcome to mySewnet! What would you like to do?". Google Assistant is now active for about 8 seconds to receive a command.

Command Examples

The following commands can be used when the creative icon™ 2 is "open" as described above.

Show Tutorials:

Search for tutorials and quick start guides using phrases like:

  • "Show me... how to wind the bobbin"
  • "Show me... how to sew an invisible zipper"

Open Stitch Categories or Design Search:

Open stitch categories or search for embroidery designs using the phrase:

  • "Show me... all butterfly embroideries"

The creative icon™ 2 will respond: "Would you like to search in the machine or in mySewnet Library?". Respond with your preference, e.g., "mySewnet Library".

Load Stitches:

Load stitches or embroidery designs using the phrase:

  • "Load... a zigzag stitch"

Reactivate Voice Control

Using Amazon Alexa

If more than 30 seconds have passed since your last command, you can reactivate by saying:

  • "Alexa, ask creative icon 2 to show me..."
  • "... how to wind the bobbin"
  • "... how to sew an invisible zipper"
  • "... all butterfly embroideries"
  • "Alexa, ask creative icon 2 to load..."
  • "... a zigzag stitch"

Using Google Assistant

If more than 8 seconds have passed since your last command, reactivate by saying:

  • "Hey Google, talk to mySewnet"

After Google Assistant replies, say:

  • "Show me..."
  • "... how to wind the bobbin"
  • "... how to sew an invisible zipper"
  • "... all butterfly embroideries"

After Google Assistant replies, say:

  • "Load..."
  • "... a zigzag stitch"

Alexa Smart Home

You can use Alexa Smart Home commands with your creative icon™ 2. These commands are slightly different; instead of saying "Alexa, ask creative icon 2 to...", you can issue direct commands:

  • "Alexa, turn on machine 1."
  • "Alexa, turn off machine 1."
  • "Alexa, set mode to sewing on machine 1."
  • "Alexa, set mode to embroidery on machine 1."

Note: If you have assigned a nickname to your machine, use that nickname instead of "machine 1".
