Proper Use
This fully automatic electronic blood pressure monitor is intended for measuring blood pressure at home. It is a non-invasive system for measuring diastolic and systolic blood pressure and pulse of adults using oscillometric technique via a wrist cuff.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for measuring blood pressure of children. Consult your doctor before using on older children.
- Persons with arrhythmia, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, or who have had a stroke should consult their doctor before using the device.
Common Factors Affecting Measurement Accuracy
- Rest for 5-10 minutes before measurement.
- Avoid eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, exercising, and bathing before measurement.
- Remove watches or jewelry from the wrist being measured.
- Always measure on the same wrist (normally left).
- Measure regularly at the same time each day.
- Supporting the arm during measurement may increase blood pressure.
- Ensure a comfortable, relaxed position; do not tense muscles. Use a cushion if necessary.
- Ensure the wrist is at heart level.
- A loose or open cuff causes false readings.
- Repeated measurements can cause blood accumulation in the wrist, leading to false readings. Allow 5-minute pauses or hold the arm up to allow blood to flow normally between consecutive measurements.
Safety Instructions
Read the instruction manual carefully, especially the safety instructions, and keep it for future reference. Pass on instructions if the device is given to another person.
- The unit is intended only for home use. Consult your doctor if you have health concerns.

- Apply the cuff only on the left wrist.
- Ensure the cuff has no wrinkles to prevent bruising.
- Cuff size must match wrist circumference for accuracy.
- Do not apply the cuff over clothing, as this may cause inaccurate readings or injuries.
- Do not kink, fold, or pull the cuff over sharp edges.

What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the pressure created in the blood vessels by each heart beat. Systolic pressure is the highest value when the heart contracts. Diastolic pressure is the lower value when the heart muscle relaxes.
How is Blood Pressure Measured?
The MEDISANA BW 310 uses a microprocessor and pressure sensor to measure blood pressure from the wrist by analyzing pressure variations during cuff inflation and deflation.
Blood Pressure Classification (WHO)
Category | Systolic | Diastolic | Indicator |
---|---|---|---|
Low Blood Pressure | <100 mmHg | <60 mmHg | (Green display area) |
Normal Blood Pressure | 100 - 139 mmHg | 60 - 89 mmHg | (Green display area) |
Mild Hypertension | 140 - 159 mmHg | 90 - 99 mmHg | (Yellow display area) |
Moderate Hypertension | 160 - 179 mmHg | 100 - 109 mmHg | (Orange display area) |
Severe Hypertension | ≥180 mmHg | ≥110 mmHg | (Red display area) |
WARNING: Blood pressure that is too low is as risky as high blood pressure! Dizziness can lead to dangerous situations.
Influencing and Evaluating Readings
- Measure multiple times, record, and compare results. Do not draw conclusions from a single reading.
- Always have readings evaluated by a doctor familiar with your medical history. Inform your doctor periodically about your readings.
- Daily blood pressure values are influenced by factors like smoking, alcohol, medication, and physical exertion.
- Measure blood pressure before meals.
- Rest for at least 5-10 minutes before measuring.
- If systolic or diastolic readings are consistently unusual (too high or too low) despite correct use, inform your doctor. This also applies if an irregular or weak pulse prevents measurement.
Starting Up
Insert / Replace Batteries
Open the battery compartment lid on the left side. Insert 2 AAA LR03 1.5V batteries, observing polarity. Close the compartment. Replace batteries immediately if the [Change Battery symbol] flashes with "E6", or if nothing appears on the display. If the [Change Battery symbol] is constant with "E6", batteries are low. A full symbol indicates good batteries.
Settings
After inserting batteries, the device enters settings mode automatically. To access manually, press and hold the [Clock/Date button] for approx. 3 seconds when the unit is on.
- Year Setting: The year flashes. Press the [M button] until the desired year appears. Press the [START/STOP button] to confirm.
- Month / Date Setting: The month flashes. Press the [M button] until the desired month appears. Press the [START/STOP button] to confirm. The day then flashes. Press the [M button] until the desired day appears. Press the [START/STOP button] to confirm.
- Time Setting: The hour flashes. Press the [M button] until the desired hour appears. Press the [START/STOP button] to confirm. The minute then flashes. Press the [M button] until the desired minute appears. Press the [START/STOP button] to confirm.
Settings are now complete. The current time and date are displayed. Press the [START/STOP button] to switch off. Settings are lost if batteries are changed.
Setting User Memory
The BW 310 allows assigning readings to two user memories (60 slots each). After switching on (press [START/STOP button]), press the [User button] to select User 1 or User 2. This selection is saved until changed.
Fitting the Cuff
- Attach the clean cuff to the left wrist, free from clothing, palm facing upwards.
- Ensure a gap of approx. 1 cm between the cuff and the palm.
- Fasten the Velcro tape firmly around the wrist, but not too tight to avoid falsifying the result.
Correct Position for Taking Readings
- Perform the measurement while seated.
- Relax your arm and place it comfortably, e.g., on a table.
- Raise the wrist so the cuff is at heart level (a = too high, b = correct, c = too low).
- Keep still during the measurement: do not move or talk.
Taking a Blood Pressure Measurement
- Switch on the unit by pressing the [START/STOP button]. This also starts the measurement.
- The unit is ready. Average of last 3 measurements and last memory slot number appear briefly. The cuff inflates automatically and slowly.
- Rising pressure is shown on the display. The cuff inflates sufficiently, then slowly deflates for measurement. The [Pulse symbol] flashes when a signal is detected.
- When measurement is finished, the cuff deflates. Systolic, diastolic pressure, and pulse value appear on the display. The Blood Pressure Indicator shows the WHO classification. The [Arrhythmia display] appears if an irregular heartbeat is detected.
- Readings are automatically saved in the selected memory (up to 60 values with date/time).
- Results remain on display. Unit switches off automatically after approx. 2 minutes, or can be switched off using the [START/STOP button].
WARNING: Do not take therapeutic measures based on self-measurement. Never alter prescribed medication dosage.
Discontinuing a Measurement
If necessary to interrupt a measurement (e.g., patient feels unwell), press the [START/STOP button] at any time. The cuff will deflate immediately.
Display Stored Values
This unit has 2 memories, each with 60 slots. Results are saved automatically. To recall stored values: with the unit off, press the [START/STOP button] to power on. Press the [User button] to select user ( or ). Press the [M button]. The average of the last 3 measurements appears ("AVG" lights up). Pressing [M button] again shows the last measurement, and subsequent presses show previous values. If no button is pressed, the unit auto-switches off after approx. 2 minutes. Pressing the [START/STOP button] exits recall mode and switches off the unit. The oldest value is deleted when memory is full.
Delete Saved Values
To delete a saved measurement: display the values first. Press and hold the [M button] until "CL" and "--" appear. Press the [START/STOP button] to confirm deletion. To delete all values for a user: display the average values ("AVG" lights up). Press and hold the [M button] until "CL" and "--" appear. Press the [START/STOP button] to confirm. "CL" and "00" appear upon successful deletion.
