Legal Requirements and Best Practices

Mandatory Smoke Alarms:

Smoke alarms are legally mandated safety devices for all dwellings and summer cottages. For mains-powered alarms in new or renovated buildings, one alarm is required per 60 m² of floor space, with at least one alarm in each bedroom. All alarms must have battery or accumulator backup. Low-voltage alarms are permissible if they have centralized power (e.g., from a burglar alarm system) with battery backup, or individual battery backup. Battery-powered alarms can be chained wirelessly in renovation projects.

As of 2024, property owners are responsible for the purchase and maintenance of smoke alarms in their apartments, while residents are responsible for testing and cleaning them. For rental properties and housing companies, the 10-year battery EI3000 series alarms are highly recommended.

Regular Testing and Maintenance:

Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years. EI Electronics offers alarms with batteries designed to last the entire detector lifespan.

Regular testing is made easy with wired or wireless remote controls, which also facilitate the management of larger systems. Remote controls can silence fault alarms and help locate the first alarm in a chained system.

Alarm Chaining:

It is recommended to chain smoke alarms within a property, ensuring that if one alarm detects smoke, all alarms will sound. Chaining can be achieved via wired connections or using RadioLINK mounting bases for wireless communication. Hybrid systems can combine both methods. Up to 20 wired or 12 wireless alarms can be connected in a single system.

Choosing the Right Detector:

  • Optical Smoke Alarms: Detect smoke by changes in light. Suitable for bedrooms and living rooms.
  • Heat Detectors: Ideal for areas where steam or smoke may naturally occur, such as kitchens.

Cabling Recommendation: HÄLY cable is recommended for mains-powered, chained alarms. This is a three-core cable, with one core dedicated to chaining functionality.

Installation Guide

Placement Considerations:

Diagram Description: Diagrams illustrate correct placement of smoke detectors in a house, showing recommended distances from walls and ceilings. Another diagram details the steps for mounting the alarm base and attaching the detector.

  • Placement Rules:
  • Install one alarm in each bedroom.
  • Alarms should be positioned no more than 7.5 meters from the protected area.
  • Place detectors in a central location within the room.
  • Mount alarms centrally on the ceiling, at least 30 cm away from walls, lights, and other obstructions.
  • Avoid installation areas where air movement is restricted.

Installation Steps:

  1. Secure the mounting base to the ceiling using the provided screws. Remove the cable protection cover from the base.
  2. Connect the cables to the mounting base and reattach the cable protection cover.
  3. Slide the alarm onto the mounting base to secure it.

Detector Placement Guide:

Diagram Description: A legend shows icons representing different detector types: Combination detector (optical or heat), Heat detector, Remote alarm (if installed), and Combination detector or Optical smoke alarm. The diagram also shows typical room types (bedroom, hallway, living room, kitchen, garage, entrance hall, attic) and indicates suitable detector types for each.
