- 1 x Owner's Manual
- 1 x Safety Sheet
Rear Panel Controls and Connections
Diagram of the JBL SUB 100P rear panel showing controls: Power Mode (Auto/On), Phase (Normal/Reverse), Crossover (50Hz-150Hz), Volume, Subwoofer Input (LFE), Power Switch (On/Off), Power Input. An LED indicator displays status (Blue: On, Red: Standby).
- 1) Power Mode:
- When set to 'Auto', the subwoofer enters Standby mode. It automatically turns on when an audio signal is detected and returns to Standby after approximately 10 minutes of no signal. Setting this switch to 'On' keeps the subwoofer powered until the Power Switch is turned 'Off.'
- 2) On/Standby LED:
- Indicates the subwoofer's status when the Power Switch is 'On'. Blue LED means the subwoofer is On. Red LED means the subwoofer is in Standby mode.
- 3) Phase Switch:
- Determines if the subwoofer transducer's piston-like action is in phase with the main speakers. Playing out of phase can cancel sound waves, reducing bass performance and sonic impact. This depends on speaker placement relative to the listening position and each other.
- 4) Crossover Control:
- Sets the highest frequency at which the subwoofer reproduces sound. A higher setting increases the subwoofer's operating frequency and bass overlap with speakers, aiding a smooth bass transition. Adjust for a smooth bass response, lowering if bass is too strong, or raising if too weak.
- 5) Volume:
- Adjusts the subwoofer's volume. Turn clockwise to increase, counter-clockwise to decrease. Balance with other speakers; this setting should not need frequent changes.
- 6) Subwoofer (LFE Input):
- Connect to the dedicated subwoofer / LFE output of a receiver/processor.
- 7) Power Switch:
- Set to 'On' to power the subwoofer. Set to 'Off' to conserve energy when not in use for extended periods.
- 8) Power Input:
- Plug the power cord into an active, unswitched electrical outlet. Do not plug into accessory outlets on audio components.
Placing Your Subwoofer
Subwoofer performance is directly related to its placement in the listening room and its physical position relative to other speakers. Room reflections, standing waves, and absorptions strongly influence performance. Corner placement (1) generally maximizes bass, but can also increase destructive standing wave effects. Placing the subwoofer along the same plane as the left and right speakers (2) can improve integration. Placement behind the listening position (3) may also yield good results.
Experiment with placement before choosing a final location. Temporarily place the subwoofer in the listening position, play music with strong bass, and move around the room to find the location with the best bass performance.
Diagram illustrating subwoofer placement options: 1. Corner placement, 2. Along the same plane as front speakers, 3. Behind the listening position.
Connecting Your Subwoofer
To a Receiver or Preamp/Processor with a Low-Pass Filtered Dedicated Subwoofer Output (LFE):

To a Receiver or Preamp/Processor with Preamp Outputs:

Notes for Preamp Output Connection: Be sure to turn the Subwoofer's Crossover fully clockwise when using this connection type, as it bypasses the subwoofer's internal crossover. Check your receiver or processor menu settings and set the subwoofer selection to 'On' or 'Yes.' Review your receiver or processor's manual for more information on speaker setup and configuration. We recommend setting the subwoofer's Crossover to 80Hz for mid-sized speakers, higher for smaller (satellite) speakers, and lower for larger floorstanding speakers.
Operating the Subwoofer
Turning the Subwoofer On and Off
Set the Power Switch to 'On'. Set the Power Mode to 'Auto'. The subwoofer will automatically turn on with an audio signal and enter Standby after 10 minutes of no signal. The LED glows blue when On and red when in Standby. For extended periods of non-use, set the Power Switch to 'Off'.
Subwoofer Adjustments: Crossover
The Crossover control adjusts the built-in low-pass filter between 50Hz and 150Hz. A higher setting increases the subwoofer's operating frequency and bass overlap with speakers, aiding a smooth bass transition. Adjust for a smooth bass response, lowering if bass is too strong, or raising if too weak.
Subwoofer Adjustments: Volume
Use the volume control to set the subwoofer's volume. Turn clockwise to increase, counter-clockwise to decrease. Balance with other speakers; this setting should not need frequent changes. For optimal volume, listen to music and films with strong bass content and find a 'middle ground' level. If the subwoofer consistently seems too loud or too quiet, consider repositioning it; corner placement tends to increase bass output, while placement away from walls or corners lessens it.
Subwoofer Adjustments: Phase
The Phase switch determines if the subwoofer driver's action is in phase with the speakers. Out-of-phase operation can cancel sound waves, reducing bass performance and sonic impact. While 'Normal' is often suitable, the best setting depends on your system and room. For clearest sound and maximum impact, listen to music you know well and select the phase position that gives drums and other percussive sounds the most impact.
Using the Supplied Carpet Spikes
Four metal spikes are supplied for carpeted surfaces. Do not use on non-carpeted surfaces. To insert spikes: 1. Gently lay the subwoofer on its side on a soft, nonabrasive surface. 2. Screw each spike into the threaded insert in each foot, ensuring they are fully screwed in for stability. Note: Never drag the subwoofer; always lift and carry it.
