POWER INPUT
Control Descriptions:
- Power Mode: When set to 'Auto', the subwoofer enters Standby mode and automatically turns on when an audio signal is detected. It returns to Standby mode if no audio signal is detected for approximately 10 minutes. Setting this switch to 'On' keeps the subwoofer powered until the Power Switch is turned 'Off.'
- On/Standby LED: Indicates the subwoofer's status. Glows blue when On, glows red when in Standby mode.
- Phase Switch: Determines if the subwoofer driver's piston-like action is in phase with the main speakers. Proper phasing helps avoid sound wave cancellation and enhances bass performance and sonic impact. Experiment with 'Normal' and 'Reverse' settings to find the best sound for your room.
- Crossover Control: Sets the highest frequency at which the subwoofer reproduces sound (50Hz-150Hz). Adjusting this helps achieve a smooth transition of bass frequencies between the subwoofer and other speakers.
- Volume: Adjusts the subwoofer's overall volume level. Turn clockwise to increase, counter-clockwise to decrease.
- Subwoofer (LFE Input): Connect the subwoofer to the dedicated subwoofer / LFE output of a receiver or processor using an LFE cable.
- Power Switch: Turns the subwoofer on or off. Set to 'Off' to conserve energy when not in use for extended periods.
- Power Input: Connect the power cord to an active, unswitched electrical outlet. Do not plug into accessory outlets on other audio components.
Connection Options:
To a Receiver or Preamp/Processor with a Low-Pass Filtered Dedicated Subwoofer Output (LFE): Connect the 'SUBWOOFER LFE OUT' from your receiver/processor to the 'SUBWOOFER INPUT' on the JBL SUB 100P using an LFE cable (not included). For this connection, ensure the subwoofer's Crossover control is set fully clockwise. Consult your receiver/processor manual for specific setup instructions.
To a Receiver or Preamp/Processor with Preamp Outputs: Connect the 'PREAMP OUTPUT' from your receiver/processor to the 'SUBWOOFER INPUT' on the JBL SUB 100P using an RCA Y-Adapter cable or a standard RCA cable (not included). For this connection, it is recommended to set the subwoofer's Crossover setting to 80Hz for mid-sized speakers, higher for smaller speakers, and lower for larger floorstanding speakers. Consult your receiver/processor manual for specific setup instructions.
Placing the Subwoofer
Subwoofer performance is highly dependent on its placement in the listening room and its position relative to other speakers. Room acoustics, reflections, and standing waves significantly influence bass output and quality. Experimenting with placement is strongly recommended.
- Placing the subwoofer near a wall generally increases bass.
- Corner placement (1) typically maximizes bass but can also increase the destructive effect of standing waves.
- Placing the subwoofer along the same plane as the left and right speakers (2) can improve integration.
- Placing the subwoofer behind the listening position (3) may also yield good results in some rooms.
To find the best location, temporarily place the subwoofer in the listening position, play music with strong bass content, and move around the room (listening from where the subwoofer would be placed) until you find the spot with the best bass performance.
Operating the Subwoofer
Turning the Subwoofer On and Off
Set the Power Switch to 'On'. Set the Power Mode to 'Auto' for automatic turn-on/standby functionality. The LED indicates status: blue for On, red for Standby. For extended periods of non-use (e.g., vacation), set the Power Switch to 'Off' to conserve energy.
Subwoofer Adjustments: Crossover
The Crossover control (50Hz-150Hz) adjusts the subwoofer's low-pass filter. A higher setting allows the subwoofer to operate at higher frequencies, potentially overlapping more with main speakers. Adjust for a smooth bass transition. If bass seems too strong, try a lower setting; if too weak, try a higher setting.
Subwoofer Adjustments: Volume
Use the Volume control to balance the subwoofer's output with your system's other speakers. Find a 'middle ground' volume that works well for both music and movies. Placement can affect perceived loudness; corner placement tends to increase bass output.
Subwoofer Adjustments: Phase
The Phase switch (Normal/Reverse) determines if the subwoofer driver's motion is in phase with the main speakers. Incorrect phasing can cancel bass frequencies and reduce impact. Listen to music you know well and select the position that provides the clearest sound and maximum impact for percussive instruments.
Using the Supplied Carpet Spikes
Four metal spikes are included for use on carpeted surfaces only. To install:
- Gently lay the subwoofer on its side on a soft, nonabrasive surface.
- Screw each spike into the threaded insert in each foot until fully seated.
Note: NEVER drag the subwoofer. Always lift and carry it to its new location.
