OSRAM ENCELIUM Occupancy Sensors and Power Packs: Installation and Operation Manual
Introduction
This document provides installation instructions, features, operation details, and troubleshooting guidance for OSRAM ENCELIUM occupancy sensors and power packs. These devices are designed for automatic lighting control based on occupancy, offering energy savings and enhanced convenience. They utilize advanced technologies such as Passive Infrared (PIR) and Ultrasonic sensing, often in combination (Multi-Technology), and feature adaptive functions that learn occupancy patterns to optimize performance.
The manual covers various product types including:
- Wall-Mounted Occupancy Sensors: Models like SWM-1200, SSP-LNV, and SSM-LNV, designed for direct wall installation, often replacing standard light switches.
- Ceiling-Mounted Occupancy Sensors: Series such as SCP and SCM, suitable for various room sizes and coverage needs.
- Occupancy Sensor Power Packs: Models like PBA-015 and PPK series, which provide low-voltage power to sensors and switch line-voltage lighting loads, adapting sensors to standard electrical systems.
Warnings and Cautions
General Safety Precautions:
- Always turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that power is off before performing any wiring, installation, or servicing.
- If unsure about any part of these instructions, consult a qualified electrician.
- Install and use devices in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and regulations.
- Use only copper or copper-clad wire for connections.
- Do not touch the sensor lens surface; clean only with a damp cloth.
- Sensors must be mounted on a vibration-free surface.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet (approx. 1.8 meters) from air vents or climate control sources (radiators, air conditioners) to prevent false triggering.
- Do not mount sensors closer than 10 feet (approx. 3 meters) from each other if multiple sensors are used in proximity.
- Do not install units to control receptacles.
- Controlling loads exceeding specified ratings can damage the unit and pose risks of fire, electric shock, or injury. Verify load ratings for your application.

General Installation Principles
Installation involves several key steps common across most models:
- Power Disconnection: Ensure power is OFF at the breaker or fuse and verify it is off before proceeding.
- Wire Preparation: Strip approximately 5/8" (1.6 cm) of insulation from wire ends. Ensure wire ends are straight.
- Wiring Connections: Connect wires according to the specific wiring diagrams provided for each model. Common wire color designations include:
- Red: +24VDC (Power input to sensor)
- Black: DC Return / Line Hot (depending on application)
- Blue: Occupancy Signal / Load connection
- Gray: Occupancy Signal / Photocell connection (used for ambient light override)
- Green: Ground connection
- Mounting: Secure the sensor or power base to the mounting surface (wallboard, ceiling tile, junction box) using the provided hardware. Ensure proper alignment and stability.
- Restore Power: After all connections are made and the device is mounted, restore power at the circuit breaker or fuse. Allow a brief warm-up period (typically 30 seconds to 1 minute) for the device to initialize.
Use check boxes [✓] when steps are completed.
Mounting Options
Various mounting methods are supported depending on the sensor model and installation environment:
- Wall Mounting: Sensors can be installed directly onto wallboard using screws, or mounted within standard junction boxes. Some models are designed to replace existing wall switches.
- Ceiling Mounting: For ceiling installations, sensors can be mounted to drop ceilings using screws, nuts, washers, or threaded rods. They can also be installed in junction boxes or using surface mount raceways.
- Power Base Installation: Power packs (e.g., PBA-015) are typically mounted inside standard electrical boxes (octagon or 4"x4" with mud ring) and connect to the sensor via a low-voltage terminal connector. They can also be mounted inside fluorescent ballast cavities or fixtures.
Key Features
OSRAM ENCELIUM sensors offer a range of advanced features for efficient lighting control:
- Multi-Technology Detection: Combines Passive Infrared (PIR) and Ultrasonic sensors for accurate motion detection and reduced false triggers.
- Single-Technology Modes: Allows selection of PIR-only or Ultrasonic-only operation via DIP switches.
- Adaptive Functions: Sensors analyze occupancy patterns and environmental conditions to automatically adjust delayed-off times, optimizing energy savings.
- Walk-Through Mode: Turns lights off shortly after brief occupancy (e.g., 2.5 minutes) to conserve energy in intermittently used spaces.
- LED Indicators: Provide visual feedback on motion detection (Red for PIR, Green for Ultrasonic). These can often be disabled.
- Blinders: Adjustable shutters that narrow the sensor's field of view to prevent unwanted detection from adjacent areas.
- Time-Delay Adjustment: A user-adjustable knob (typically black) to set the duration lights remain on after motion ceases.
- Ambient Light Override (Photocell): Prevents lights from activating when sufficient natural light is present. Requires specific wiring (using the Gray wire) and adjustment of the Light control knob.
- Manual ON Mode: Allows manual activation of lights via a push-button, with automatic turn-off based on occupancy.
- Zero-Cross Switching: Power packs utilize this technology for improved relay longevity and compatibility with electronic ballasts.
Operation
Upon detecting motion, the sensor turns the connected lights ON. The lights remain ON as long as motion is detected. Once motion ceases, the sensor waits for the pre-set delayed-off time to expire before turning the lights OFF. Adaptive functions may adjust this delayed-off time based on usage patterns. The Walk-through mode provides a shorter off-delay for momentary occupancy.
Settings and Adjustments
Sensors and power packs feature various adjustment controls:
Adjustment Knobs:
- Time (typically Black knob): Sets the delayed-off time duration.
- Range (typically Red knob): Adjusts the sensor's detection sensitivity and range.
- Light (typically Blue knob): Controls the ambient light threshold for the Ambient Light Override (photocell) feature.
DIP Switches:
DIP switches are used to configure operational modes:
- Mode Selection: Choose between Multi-Technology or Single-Technology (PIR/Ultrasonic) modes.
- Feature Control: Enable/disable Manual Mode, Walk-Through, Test Mode, and LED indicators.
Test Mode allows setting a short (e.g., 6-second) time-out for walk-testing sensor coverage.
Troubleshooting
Common issues and solutions include:
- Lights do not turn ON: Check power supply, circuit breaker, wiring connections, and lamp functionality. Ensure low-voltage wiring is correctly connected.
- Lights stay ON: Verify there is no constant motion detected. Adjust sensor range or sensitivity. Check if the sensor is inadvertently detecting motion from hallways or heat sources. Ensure the time-out setting is appropriate.
- Lights turn ON too long: Adjust the time-delay setting to a shorter duration.
- Flickering Lights: Check for loose lamp or wire connections. Ensure wires are securely fastened in connectors.
For persistent issues, consult the specific model's troubleshooting section or contact OSRAM SYLVANIA support.
