The Volvo S80 demonstrates the latest safety enhancements. An Inflatable Curtain, protecting the heads of all passengers in side collisions, and WHIPS, a whiplash protection system, make the Volvo S80 one of the safest cars in the world. Volvo bodyshells are designed to crumple progressively on impact, absorbing energy whilst protecting passengers within a robust safety cage. In an offset collision, special reinforcements prevent the front wheels penetrating the passenger compartment.
The Volvo Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) dissipates the force of any side impact around the passenger cell. Side impact airbags are built into the outer side of each front seat. In a side impact, the airbag inflates instantaneously to help protect the chest, hips and head. Together, the systems reduce the risk of severe injury in a side impact by 35%.

Passengers travelling in Volvo cars have been wearing seat belts since 1959. Today, all Volvo front seat belts feature three-point attachment, automatic height adjustment and automatic pre-tensioners. The correct height adjustment is automatically set for each passenger whenever the belt is pulled out.
In an accident, the pre-tensioner mechanism pulls front seat passengers back into their seats, away from the dashboard, windscreen and steering wheel.
We believe children in cars deserve the very best attention. Volvo is one of the few manufacturers to design, develop and test its own child seats. Our integrated and removable child seats place your children in the optimum seating position.
Volvo is always introducing innovative safety technology. The raised brake light in the rear window uses new LED illumination technology. By warning in just 1 millisecond instead of the conventional 250 milliseconds, any drivers braking behind gain an extra 8 metres stopping distance at 70mph.

The Environment
Responsibility and care for the environment.
Car use, and development, carries with it responsibilities. Volvo and its dealers have always recognised the role they must play in helping to protect and safeguard the environment.
Cleaner manufacture
We are continually refining our own manufacturing techniques. We quantify the environmental effect of every system, procedure and design. Together with environmental experts, we have developed a unique and comprehensive methodology for product development. It helps our engineers identify and choose design and manufacturing routes which will impart the lowest environmental load.
We have banned the use of many environmentally damaging materials and chemicals from the production of the Volvo range. This includes CFCs, cadmium, mercury and asbestos. Currently, the Volvo paint shop in Gothenburg is the cleanest in the world. Its level of solvent emissions is 80% lower than conventional plants. Even the water and air used in production is cleaned. In some plants, the water we re-introduce is cleaner than the water we take in.
Lower emissions
80% of a car's environmental impact is generated when it is driven. Volvo has long been in the forefront of emission control technology, the most important environmental aspect of car use.
95% of the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides are eliminated from the exhaust fumes of the petrol engine. Thanks to an innovative design the catalytic converter reaches operating temperatures in half the time of many other comparable systems.
Volvo emission control technology also remains effective after years of operation. Official tests have shown that emissions are practically as clean after 50,000 miles as they are when the car is new.
Efficient recycling
Recycling is an important way of saving energy, eliminating waste and recovering raw materials. Volvo has been instrumental in developing new component and recovery programmes with partners in Sweden.
Wherever possible, recycled plastics, textiles and wood fibres are used selectively in manufacture. All plastic parts weighing more than 50g are marked to aid future reprocessing. The engine block includes recycled aluminium.
