Volvo S40

Volvo V70 Torslanda Specifics: Similar specification to standard equipment with the following changes: Andorra Upholstery, SC802 RDS Radio Cassette with 6 Speakers and Auto Sound Control, Electrically Adjustable Door Mirrors, Temp Spare Wheel Spacesaver. The Winter and Estate packs are the only packs which can be added to the Volvo V70 Torslanda.

Engine Choices: 2.0 litre 10 valve (126 bhp), 2.5 litre 10 valve (144 bhp)

Safety: Volvo's First Concern

For over 50 years, passenger safety has been Volvo's first concern. Constant research is the backbone of Volvo technology, making the company one of the world's most respected pioneers of automotive safety. The Volvo S80 demonstrates the latest safety enhancements, including an Inflatable Curtain (IC) protecting the heads of all passengers in side collisions, and WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) built into the front seats. As with all Volvo safety developments, these new technologies will be progressively introduced throughout the Volvo range.

Volvo bodyshells are designed to crumple progressively on impact, absorbing energy whilst protecting passengers within a robust safety cage. In an offset collision, special reinforcements prevent the front wheels penetrating the passenger compartment.

The Volvo Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) dissipates the force of any side impact around the passenger cell. Side impact airbags are built into the outer side of each front seat. In a side impact, the airbag inflates instantaneously to help protect the chest, hips, and head. Together, the SIPS and side airbags reduce the risk of severe injury in a side impact by 35%.

Timeline of Volvo Safety Innovations:

Passengers travelling in Volvo cars have been wearing seat belts since 1959. Today, all Volvo front seat belts feature three-point attachment, automatic height adjustment, and automatic pre-tensioners. The correct height adjustment is automatically set for each passenger whenever the belt is pulled out. In an accident, the pre-tensioner mechanism pulls front seat passengers back into their seats, away from the dashboard, windscreen, and steering wheel.

Volvo believes children in cars deserve the very best attention. Volvo is one of the few manufacturers to design, develop, and test its own child seats. Integrated and removable child seats place children in the optimum seating position.

Volvo is always introducing innovative safety technology. The raised brake light in the rear window uses new LED illumination technology. By warning in just 1 millisecond instead of the conventional 250 milliseconds, drivers braking behind gain an extra 8 metres stopping distance at 70 mph.

The Environment: Responsibility and Care

Car use and development carry responsibilities. Volvo and its dealers have always recognised the role they must play in helping to protect and safeguard the environment. Volvo believes that by providing full environmental information to customers, they can make informed choices. Today, Volvo publishes full environmental specifications for all current models. This ongoing open, honest, and accessible approach is a fundamental part of Volvo policy on the environment.

Cleaner Manufacture

Volvo continually refines its manufacturing techniques, quantifying the environmental effect of every system, procedure, and design. Together with environmental experts, Volvo has developed a unique and comprehensive methodology for product development that helps engineers identify and choose design and manufacturing routes which will impart the lowest environmental load. Many environmentally damaging materials and chemicals, including CFCs, cadmium, mercury, and asbestos, have been banned from production. The Volvo paint shop in Gothenburg is noted as the cleanest in the world, with solvent emissions 80% lower than conventional plants. Even the water and air used in production is cleaned; in some plants, the water reintroduced is cleaner than the water taken in.

Lower Emissions

Approximately 80% of a car's environmental impact is generated when it is driven. Volvo has long been at the forefront of emission control technology, the most important environmental aspect of car use. 95% of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides are eliminated from the exhaust fumes of the petrol engine. Thanks to an innovative design, the catalytic converter reaches operating temperatures in half the time of many comparable systems. Volvo emission control technology remains effective after years of operation; official tests show emissions are practically as clean after 50,000 miles as when the car is new.

Efficient Recycling

Recycling is an important way of saving energy, eliminating waste, and recovering raw materials. Volvo has been instrumental in developing new component and recovery programmes with partners in Sweden. Wherever possible, recycled plastics, textiles, and wood fibres are used selectively in manufacture. All plastic parts weighing more than 50g are marked to aid future reprocessing. The engine block includes recycled aluminium.
