Operation

How to Use Your Pressure Washer

If you have problems operating your pressure washer, call the helpline at 1-800-743-4115.

Pressure Washer Location:

WARNING: Running engines give off carbon monoxide (odorless, colorless, poison gas). Breathing carbon monoxide will cause nausea, fainting, or death. Operate pressure washers ONLY outdoors. Keep exhaust gas from entering confined areas through windows, doors, ventilation intakes, or other openings. DO NOT operate inside any building or enclosure.

The pressure washer must be at least 5 ft. (152 cm) from structures with combustible walls or materials. Maintain at least 3 ft. (92 cm) clearance on all sides for cooling and servicing. Place in a well-ventilated area to allow exhaust gas removal. Ensure exhaust gas is kept away from openings that could allow it to collect in a confined area. Consider prevailing winds and air currents when positioning.

How to Start Pressure Washer:

Follow these steps for first-time startup or after the unit has been idle:

  1. Place the pressure washer near an outside water source capable of supplying at least 3.0 GPM more than the washer's rating and no less than 20 PSI at the garden hose end.
  2. Check that the high-pressure hose is tightly connected to the spray gun and pump.
  3. Ensure the unit is in a level position.
  4. Connect the garden hose to the water inlet on the pump. Turn ON the water.

CAUTION: DO NOT run the pump without the water supply connected and turned on. Damage resulting from this will void the warranty.

  1. Squeeze the spray gun trigger until a steady stream of water occurs.
  2. Attach the nozzle extension to the spray gun. Tighten by hand.
  3. Position the nozzle in low-pressure mode (slide forward) and squeeze the trigger to relieve pressure. Water will flow out in a thin stream. Continue holding the trigger until a steady stream of water appears with no air. Release the trigger.
  4. Engage the trigger lock on the spray gun.

Start the engine according to the engine owner's manual and the operating instructions tag on the washer.

WARNING: Rapid retraction of the starter cord (kickback) can pull your hand and arm toward the engine faster than you can let go, potentially causing broken bones, fractures, bruises, or sprains. Pull the cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly to avoid kickback. If the engine starts and fails to continue running, or if resistance increases during starting attempts, squeeze the spray gun trigger.

NOTE: Always keep the throttle lever in the "Fast" position when operating the pressure washer.

WARNING: Running engines produce heat. The muffler and nearby areas can reach or exceed 150°F (65°C). Severe burns can occur on contact. Combustible debris (leaves, grass, brush) can catch fire. DO NOT touch hot surfaces. Allow equipment to cool before touching. Keep the pressure washer at least 5 feet from combustible walls/materials and 3 feet clearance on all sides for cooling and servicing. California law requires a spark arrester. If equipped, maintain it.

WARNING: The high-pressure stream of water can pierce skin and underlying tissues, leading to serious injury or amputation. The spray gun retains high pressure when the washer is shut down. Keep the high-pressure hose connected to the pump and spray gun while pressurized. Squeeze the spray gun trigger to relieve trapped pressure every time you stop the engine. Engage the trigger lock.

NOTE: A small amount of water may squirt out when pressure is released.

How to Stop Your Pressure Washer:

  1. Let the engine idle for two minutes.
  2. Turn off the engine according to the engine owner's manual.
  3. Squeeze the spray gun trigger to relieve trapped pressure in the hose to avoid injury.
  4. Engage the trigger lock on the spray gun when not in use.

How to Use the Adjustable Nozzle:

You should now know how to START and STOP your pressure washer. This section explains how to adjust the spray pattern and apply detergent.

CAUTION: A pressure washer produces a high-pressure spray that increases the risk of injury and damage. NEVER adjust the spray pattern while spraying. NEVER put hands in front of the nozzle to adjust the spray pattern.

  1. Slide the nozzle forward for low-pressure mode (for detergent application). Slide it backward for high-pressure mode.

Usage Tips:

  • For effective cleaning, keep the spray nozzle 8 to 24 inches away from the cleaning surface.
  • Getting too close, especially in high-pressure mode, may damage the surface.
  • DO NOT get closer than 6 inches when cleaning tires.

Applying Detergent with the Adjustable Nozzle:

IMPORTANT: Use soaps specifically designed for pressure washers. Household detergents can damage the pump.

CAUTION: You must attach all hoses before starting the engine. Starting the engine without all hoses connected and water ON will damage the pump. Damage from this will void the warranty.

To apply detergent:

  1. Review the use of adjustable nozzles.
  2. Prepare the detergent solution as required.
  3. Place the filter end of the chemical injection hose into the detergent container.

CAUTION: Keep the chemical injection tube from contacting the hot muffler.

  1. Slide the adjustable nozzle forward to low-pressure mode. Detergent cannot be applied in high-pressure mode.
  2. Ensure the garden hose is connected to the water inlet and the high-pressure hose is connected to the spray gun and pump. Start the engine.
  3. Apply detergent to a dry surface, starting at the bottom and working upward with long, even, overlapping strokes.
  4. Allow detergent to soak in for 3-5 minutes before washing and rinsing. Reapply as needed to prevent drying. DO NOT allow detergent to dry on the surface (prevents streaking).

IMPORTANT: Flush the chemical injection system after each use by placing the filter into a bucket of clean water and running the pressure washer in low-pressure mode for 1-2 minutes.

Pressure Washer Rinsing:

For rinsing:

  1. Slide the nozzle backward to high pressure, press the trigger, and wait for the detergent to clear.

NOTE: You can stop detergent flow by removing the chemical injection hose from the bottle.

  1. Keep the spray gun a safe distance from the area you plan to spray.

WARNING: High-pressure spray can cause falls if you are too close to the cleaning surface. Keep nozzle 8-24 inches away. Operate on a stable surface. Be careful if using from unstable locations like ladders or scaffolding. Firmly grasp the spray gun with both hands to avoid injury from kickback.

  1. Apply high-pressure spray to a small area, check for damage. If no damage, continue cleaning.
  2. Start rinsing at the top of the area, working down with overlapping strokes.

Cleaning Chemical Injection Hose:

If the chemical injection hose was used, flush it with clean water before stopping the engine:

  1. Place the chemical injection hose in a bucket of clean water.
  2. Slide the adjustable nozzle forward to low-pressure position.
  3. Flush for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Shut off the engine.

IMPORTANT: Shutting off the engine does not release system pressure. After the engine shuts down, squeeze the spray gun trigger to relieve hose pressure.

Automatic Cool Down System (Thermal Relief):

If the engine runs for 3-5 minutes without the trigger being pressed, circulating pump water can reach temperatures above 125°F. The system activates to cool the pump by discharging warm water onto the ground.

General Maintenance Recommendations

The pressure washer warranty does not cover items subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full warranty value, maintain the pressure washer as instructed in this manual.

NOTE: For questions about replacing components, call 1-800-743-4115.

  • Some adjustments need periodic maintenance.
  • All maintenance in this manual and the engine owner's manual should be done at least once each season.
  • Annually, clean or replace the spark plug and air filter. A new spark plug and clean air filter ensure a proper fuel-air mixture, helping the engine run better and last longer. Refer to the engine owner's manual for details.
  • If equipped with inflatable tires, maintain air pressure at the value marked on the tire, or within 15 and 40 psi.

Before Each Use:

  1. Check engine oil level.
  2. Check water inlet screen for damage.
  3. Check in-line filter for damage.
  4. Check high-pressure hose for leaks.
  5. Check chemical injection hose and filter for damage.
  6. Check spray gun and adjustable nozzle extension assembly for leaks.
  7. Rinse the garden hose to flush out debris.

Pressure Washer Maintenance

Check and Clean Inlet Screen:

Examine the screen on the water inlet. Clean if clogged or replace if damaged.

Check High Pressure Hose:

High-pressure hoses can develop leaks from wear, kinking, or abuse. Inspect the hose each time before use. Check for cuts, leaks, abrasions, cover bulging, coupling damage, or movement. Replace the hose immediately if any of these conditions exist.

WARNING: The high-pressure stream of water can pierce skin and underlying tissues, leading to serious injury and possible amputation. NEVER repair a high-pressure hose; replace it. Replacement hose rating MUST exceed the unit's maximum pressure rating.

Check Chemical Injection Hose:

Examine the filter on the detergent tube and clean if clogged. The tube should fit tightly on the barbed fitting. Examine the tube for leaks or tears. Replace the filter or tube if damaged.

Check Gun and Adjustable Nozzle Extension:

Examine the hose connection to the spray gun for security. Test the trigger by pressing it and ensuring it "springs back" into place. Engage the trigger lock in the ON position and test the trigger; it should not be pressable. Replace the gun immediately if any of these tests fail.

Check In-Line Filter:

Refer to Figure 13 and service the in-line filter if clogged:

  1. Detach spray gun and nozzle extension from the high-pressure hose. Detach the nozzle extension from the spray gun and remove the o-ring and screen. Flush the screen, spray gun, and nozzle extension with clean water to clear debris.
  2. If the screen is damaged, the maintenance kit contains a replacement in-line filter screen and an o-ring. If undamaged, reuse the screen.
  3. Place the in-line filter screen into the threaded end of the nozzle extension. Direction does not matter. Push the screen in with the eraser end of a pencil until it rests flat at the bottom of the opening. Be careful not to bend the screen.
  4. Place the o-ring into the threaded end of the extension. Push the o-ring snugly against the in-line filter screen.
  5. Assemble the nozzle extension to the spray gun as described earlier.

Nozzle Maintenance:

A pulsing sensation when squeezing the spray gun trigger may be caused by excessive pump pressure, often due to a clogged or restricted orifice from foreign materials like dirt. To correct this:

  1. Shut off the engine and water supply.
  2. Detach the nozzle extension from the spray gun. Twist the nozzle clockwise to the "stream" position. Using the supplied 2mm (5/64) allen wrench, remove the orifice from the end of the nozzle extension.
  3. Remove the in-line filter from the other end of the nozzle extension.
  4. Use the included wire (or a small paper clip) to free any foreign material clogging or restricting the orifice.
  5. Using a garden hose, remove additional debris by back-flushing water through the nozzle extension for 30-60 seconds. Turn the adjustable nozzle extension to "stream spray" and move the nozzle from low to high while flushing.
  6. Reinstall the orifice and in-line filter into the nozzle extension. DO NOT overtighten the orifice with the allen wrench.
  7. Reconnect the nozzle extension to the spray gun.
  8. Reconnect the water supply, turn on the water, and start the engine.
  9. Test the pressure washer by operating with the nozzle in high and low positions, or with any supplied quick-connect nozzles.

O-Ring Maintenance:

O-rings keep hose and spray gun connections tight and leak-free. They may wear or become damaged during normal operation. An O-Ring Maintenance Kit is provided with replacement o-rings, a rubber washer, and a water inlet filter. Refer to the kit's instruction sheet for servicing o-rings. Note that not all parts in the kit may be used on your unit.

WARNING: NEVER repair leaking connections with sealant. Replace the o-ring or seal.

To remove a worn or damaged o-ring, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it off.

Pump Maintenance:

Changing Pump Oil:

Change oil every 50 hours or once yearly, whichever occurs first.

NOTE: Purchase a pre-measured bottle of pump oil (item number 190586GS) from an authorized service center.

To change pump oil:

  1. Drain engine oil and fuel from the pressure washer.
  2. Use an 8mm allen wrench to remove the black oil cap from the pump (located between the high-pressure outlet and garden hose inlet).
  3. Tilt the pressure washer to drain oil into an approved container until it drips slowly from the pump.
  4. Tilt the pressure washer in the opposite direction and empty the pre-measured pump oil bottle into the same opening (a small funnel may be helpful).
  5. Install the black oil cap on the pump and tighten firmly.
  6. Set the pressure washer upright. Add fuel and engine oil.

Engine Maintenance:

Refer to the engine owner's manual for engine maintenance instructions.

CAUTION: Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact with used motor oil. Used motor oil has been shown to cause skin cancer in certain laboratory animals. Thoroughly wash exposed areas with soap and water.

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. DO NOT POLLUTE. CONSERVE RESOURCES. RETURN USED OIL TO COLLECTION CENTERS.

Preparing the Unit for Storage

Water should not remain in the unit for long periods, as sediments or minerals can deposit on pump parts and "freeze" pump action. If you do not plan to use the pressure washer for more than 30 days, follow this procedure:

  1. Flush the chemical injection hose by placing the filter into a pail of clean water while running the pressure washer in low-pressure mode (nozzle forward). Flush for one to two minutes.
  2. Shut off the engine and let it cool. Remove high-pressure and garden hoses. Disconnect the spark plug wire.
  3. Empty the pump of all liquids by pulling the recoil handle about 6 times. This should remove most liquid from the pump.
  4. Use PumpSaver ?️ to prevent corrosion buildup and freezing of the pump.
  5. Store the unit in a clean, dry area.

Protecting the Pump:

To protect the pump from damage caused by mineral deposits or freezing, use PumpSaver to treat the pump. This prevents freeze damage and lubricates pistons and seals.

NOTE: PumpSaver is an optional accessory and is not included with the pressure washer. Contact your nearest authorized service center to purchase it.

To use PumpSaver, ensure the pressure washer is turned off and disconnected from the water supply. Read and follow all instructions and warnings on the PumpSaver container.

CAUTION: You must protect your unit from freezing temperatures. Failure to do so will permanently damage your pump and render your unit inoperable. Freeze damage is not covered under warranty.

CAUTION: Read and follow all cautions and warnings on the PumpSaver can label. Always wear eye protection when using PumpSaver.

CAUTION: PumpSaver may drip from the pump after treatment and can stain wood and concrete. Protect surfaces from dripping PumpSaver.

NOTE: If PumpSaver is not available, draw RV antifreeze (non-alcohol) into the pump by pouring the solution into a 3-foot section of garden hose connected to the inlet adapter and pulling the recoil handle twice.

Storing the Engine:

Refer to the engine owner's manual for instructions on how to properly prepare the engine for storage.
