Monopoly Deal: How to Play
Welcome to Monopoly Deal, the fast-paced card game of property trading!
How to Win
Be the first player to collect 3 full property sets of different colors.
What the Game's About
Monopoly Deal is about collecting properties and stealing from opponents. Use Action cards to charge rent, swap cards, demand birthday money, and more. Build your personal bank and watch out for other players!
Set Up
- Remove the 4 Quick Start Rules cards for reference.
- Shuffle the remaining cards and deal 5 to each player, face down.
- Players look at their cards but keep them secret.
- Place the remaining cards face down in the center as the draw pile.
- Decide who goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
On Your Turn
-
Take 2 Cards
Take 2 cards from the draw pile. If you have no cards left, take 5 instead.
-
Play Up to 3 Cards
Play up to 3 cards from your hand onto the table in front of you. You can play any combination of the following types of cards, in any order:
-
Put Money/Action Cards into Your Own Bank
Build a 'Bank' pile in front of you using Money cards and/or Action cards. If an Action card is placed in your bank, it loses its action for the rest of the game. If used to pay another player, it goes directly into their bank.
-
Put Down Properties into Your Own Collection
Lay Property cards face up to build your Property sets. Each card indicates how many properties are needed for that color set. Collect properties to form sets; 3 full sets of different colors are needed to win.
You can only reorganize your property collection on your turn. If you realize you've won during another player's turn, you must wait until your turn to announce it.
-
Play Action Cards into the Center
Follow the instructions on the Action cards. These cards allow actions like charging rent, stealing cards, or demanding birthday money.
Action cards picked up on your turn can be played immediately as one of your three cards or saved for a later turn. Action cards can also be banked as money, with their value shown in a red ring.
-
-
End Your Turn
If you have more than 7 cards in your hand (excluding cards on the table) at the end of your turn, discard the excess to the bottom of the draw pile. You should have only 7 cards.
The Cards in More Detail
Action Cards
- Sly Deal: Steal a property from another player and add it to your property collection. You cannot steal a card from a full set. Can be banked as money.
- Forced Deal: Swap a property card with another player for one from your property collection. Can be banked as money.
- Deal Breaker: Steal a full set of properties from any player. Can be banked as money.
- Just Say No: Use at any time to cancel another player's Action card. Can be banked as money.
- Debt Collector: Demand $5M from one other player. Can be banked as money.
- It's My Birthday: All players pay you $2M. Can be banked as money.
- Rent: Charge other players rent on your properties matching the Rent card's color. Can be banked as money.
- Double the Rent: Play with a standard Rent card to double the rent amount. Can be banked as money.
- Multi-colored Rent card: Charge one player of your choice rent on any of your properties. Can be banked as money.
- Pass Go: Draw 2 extra cards from the draw pile. Multiple Pass Go cards can be played per turn. Can be banked as money.
Property Cards
- Each card shows the number of properties needed for a full set of that color, including Railroads and Utilities.
- Property Wildcards: Can substitute for property cards of shown colors. Can be swapped between sets on your turn. Two multi-colored Property Wildcards can be used as any color property but have no monetary value and cannot be used for payment.
- House/Hotel: Add these to a full set of properties to increase rent value. Only one house and one hotel can be added per set. A hotel can only be added after a house. Houses and hotels cannot be added to Railroads or Utilities.
- Money cards: Place in your bank pile to pay other players.
Important! How to Pay Other Players
- Cards can never go back into a player's hand.
- Pay only with cards from your bank or properties, or a combination. Never from your hand.
- Change is not given. If you pay $3M with a $5M card, you do not get $2M back.
- If paying with property cards, they go into the other player's property collection.
- If you have no cards to pay with, you do not pay.
6 or More Players
To play with 6 or more players, shuffle two packs together and play as normal. One pack contains 110 playing cards: 4 rules cards, 28 Property cards, 11 Property Wildcards, 34 Action Cards, 13 Rent cards, and 20 Money Cards.
