Straume Tekniske

Founded in 2012, Straume Tekniske delivers bespoke ventilation, heat pump, and building automation systems tailored to each client's needs. Their holistic approach reviews a building's technical systems in full-covering design, implementation, testing, plumbing, and electrical work—to ensure seamless, energy-efficient operation. Led by seasoned experts in automation and ventilation, the team provides ongoing training, service, and maintenance for optimal performance. Straume Tekniske's goal is to be a trusted partner, driving reduced energy consumption, enhanced indoor comfort, and a sustainable future.

Challenges

Ravneberghaugen—Norway's first convalescent home, founded in 1899—has grown into a year-round interdisciplinary rehabilitation center under Helse Vest. With 40 patient rooms, multiple common areas, a dining hall, kitchen, gym, treatment, and activity rooms, its management needed precise control over the radiator heating to ensure a comfortable environment, control precise temperature, and cut energy costs. A full rewiring or renovation was impossible without disrupting patient care, so they sought a retrofit solution that would be non-invasive, preserve occupant comfort, and significantly boost efficiency by giving individual control of the existing radiators.

Solution

To reduce energy costs while maintaining a pleasant indoor climate for patients, Straume Tekniske implemented a complete smart building solution. They installed 70 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats on all radiators, together with a Siemens Connect Box Gateway that allowed the devices to be integrated into the Siemens Desigo Control Point BMS over BACnet. Data from the Vicki TRVs, including temperature, humidity, and valve position (On/OFF), was used to optimize room conditions by limiting temperature to ±3 °C from the average set. A functionality was added through the BMS to remotely override manual adjustments and restore devices to their programmed setpoints, ensuring consistent performance and leading to substantial energy cost reduction. During the same period, the rehabilitation center also upgraded its HVAC systems by installing seawater heat pumps and replacing electric heating and cooling batteries with waterborne ones. These, combined with MClimate's smart thermostats, Siemens gateway, and BMS, reduced the energy costs by 30% in the first three months post-installation compared to the previous year.
