Introduction
Thank you for purchasing Sonance Visual Performance Series Extreme Speakers. This guide covers the following speaker models: VPXT6 (6" Rectangular), VPXT6R (6" Round), VPXT6R SST (6" Round, Single-Stereo Technology®) and VPXT8R (8" Round).
Before Installation: Retro-fit
- Determine the location for the speaker.
- Perform an obstruction survey to ensure no studs, conduit, pipes, heating ducts, pocket doors, or air returns in the wall cavity will interfere with the speaker.
- Position the included cutout template where the speaker is to be located and pencil an outline on the wall or ceiling. If unsure about obstructions, drill a small hole in the center of the outline and insert a coat hanger wire to feel for obstructions.
- Cut the mounting hole using appropriate tools for the construction, and run speaker wires from the mounting hole to the amplifier location.
NOTE: CONSULT LOCAL BUILDING CODES BEFORE RUNNING SPEAKER WIRES THROUGH WALLS.
Installation
Sonance Visual Performance Series Extreme speakers feature an integral RotoLock® mounting system for quick mounting directly into existing walls and ceilings.
- Strip 1/4" – 1/2" (6mm – 13mm) of insulation from each speaker lead. Twist the strands or tin the exposed wire with solder to ensure no stray strands.
- The speaker's connector posts are spring-loaded. Push the top of each connector post down to open the connector and insert the exposed wires into the holes. The speaker's positive post is labeled with a red dot; the negative post is labeled with a black dot. The VPXT6R SST features two sets of connection terminals on opposite sides of the crossover board.
- Double-check that amplifier "+" is connected to speaker "+" and amplifier "-" is connected to speaker "-".
- Ensure all Roto-Lock toggle feet are retracted so they are tucked within the mounting hole's border.
- Insert the speaker into the mounting hole and tighten the four screws on the front of the speaker baffle.
- The Roto-Lock clamps will automatically rotate into position and begin clamping the speaker.
- IMPORTANT: ALWAYS USE LOW-TORQUE SETTINGS WHEN USING A SCREW GUN; NEVER OVER TIGHTEN.
- NOTE: ADJUSTING THE TENSION OF THE ROTO-LOCK CLAMPS SO THE SPEAKER FRAME IS FLAT WILL HELP ENSURE THE GRILLE CONTACTS THE WALL PROPERLY.
- The grille is held in place by small magnets located on the grille posts and inside the speaker baffle's post holes. Place the grille against the speaker, aligning the posts and holes. The magnets will pull the grille posts into place and hold the grille firmly. The grille trim should make contact with the mounting surface all around the speaker.
Roto-Lock System Details:
The Roto-Lock system accommodates wall material thickness up to 1 1/4" (32mm). With the toggle foot cap removed, it can accommodate up to 1 3/4" (44mm). To remove clamp feet, use a small screwdriver to gently release the locking levers, then remove the feet from the clamps.
Painting the Grilles
Sonance Visual Performance Series speaker grilles cover the exposed speaker frame, so only the grilles require painting.
- Prime the grille with a metal primer/bonder spray can, following the manufacturer's directions.
- Sonance recommends water-based latex paint. Thin the paint 1:1 with a proper thinning agent and strain it through a standard mesh strainer to remove lumps.
- IMPORTANT: FOR OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS, CONSIDER OIL-BASED PAINT DUE TO INCREASED DURABILITY.
- Use a small touch-up gun or cap-spray gun with a #3 tip. Set the nozzle to a medium to wide fan and pressure regulator to 60psi. Lightly spray the front of the grille in 3 quick strokes from approximately 10 inches away.
- Let the paint set for a minute, turn the grille 90°, and repeat the spraying process until all four sides are evenly painted.
- While the paint is wet, inspect the grille for excess paint buildup or clogged perforations. Use compressed air to blow out any paint from the perforations.
- IMPORTANT: IF GRILLE PERFORATIONS ARE PLUGGED AFTER PAINTING HAS DRIED, USE A STRAIGHT PIN OR SEWING NEEDLE TO CAREFULLY REMOVE THE PAINT.
- Once the paint is thoroughly dried, mount the grille on the speaker.
