Introduction
The HT644 is a commercial-grade VHF marine portable radio with an IP68 submersible rating. It supports International, USA, and Canadian channels, as well as weather and private channels. Your dealer may have customized the radio to meet your specific requirements and will provide a separate guide for these features.

Optional Accessories
Attaching and removing accessories
To attach an accessory: Align the accessory with the socket and screw in the locking screw clockwise until finger tight. Ensure the accessory cover's rubber ring is between the antenna and the top of the radio. Do not overtighten.
To remove an accessory: Unscrew the locking screw anti-clockwise by hand. Refit the accessory socket cover to maintain submersible rating.
Battery Information
Battery charging
- Connect the AC adapter to the charger pod and plug in.
- Turn the radio off.
- Insert the battery pack into the charger pod, with or without the radio attached. The charger LED will turn red, indicating charging has begun.
- When charging is complete, the LED will change from red to green. A full charge takes approximately 6 hours.
- For standby or emergency operation, charge the battery once a week.
- If the battery is used infrequently, charge it at least once a month.
Battery Pack Precautions
- Do not recharge a fully charged battery pack, as this may reduce its lifespan.
- Remove the battery from the charger once charging is complete.
- Ensure the radio is turned off before placing it in the charger. Never switch the radio on while it is in the charger.
- Only use Entel branded battery packs and chargers.
- Do not short the battery terminals or dispose of the battery in fire.
- Do not charge the radio or battery pack if they are wet.
DANGER: DO NOT DISASSEMBLE OR MODIFY THE BATTERY IN ANY WAY! The Entel battery pack contains a safety circuit. Tampering with this circuit or damaging the battery cells can lead to extreme heat, smoke, rupture, and flames.
Controls & Indicators
1. On/off knob: Rotate to turn the radio on/off. Rotate clockwise to increase volume.
2. Buttons:
- MEM Button: Memorizes a channel for scanning.
- SCAN Button: Starts/stops scanning memorized channels.
- WX Button: Recalls weather channels.
- A/B Button: Provides instant access to preassigned channels (if programmed).
3. Channel control: Selects the desired channel.
4. Push To Talk (PTT) button: Press to transmit; release to listen.
5. 16/9 Button: Short press selects channel 16; long press selects channel 9.
6. High/Low Power Toggle: Switches between high and low transmitter power.
7. Backlight/Lock Toggle: Short press toggles LCD and keypad backlight on/off. Long press toggles keypad lock on/off.
8. Monitor button: Momentarily activates the receiver to check for signals (defeats squelch).
9. LED Indicator:
- Red steady: Transmitting.
- Red flashing slowly: Battery needs recharging.
- Green steady: Receiving.
10. Microphone: Speak into the microphone for transmission.
Preparing Your Radio for Use
Attaching / removing the antenna
To attach: Align the antenna with the socket and screw clockwise until firmly seated. Ensure the rubber ring is between the antenna and the radio top. Do not cross the thread.
To remove: Unscrew the antenna anti-clockwise.
Attaching / removing the battery pack
To attach: Align the battery pegs with the radio slots and press the top of the battery against the radio. Secure by tightening the screw clockwise by hand. Do not overtighten.
To remove: Unscrew the locking screw anti-clockwise and pull the battery away from the radio.
Switching On, Reception and Switching Off
- To switch on, rotate the on/off/volume control clockwise.
- The radio enters standby mode, indicated by the LED flashing amber once every 5 seconds.
- Adjust the volume control to the desired level.
- Use the channel buttons to select the desired channel.
- When a valid signal is received, the LED will illuminate steady green, and audio will be emitted from the speaker or audio accessory.
- To switch off, rotate the on/off/volume control until it clicks.
Transmitting
- Ensure the radio is switched on and the desired channel is selected.
- Monitor the channel to ensure it is clear before transmitting.
- Wait for the signal to stop before transmitting if you are receiving. The radio cannot transmit and receive simultaneously.
- Press and hold the PTT button (4) to transmit. The LED will illuminate red.
- For best transmission quality, speak directly into the microphone (10) at approximately 4cm distance. Avoid speaking into the top of the radio or too far from the microphone.
- Release the PTT button when transmission is finished.
