Installation and Wiring
Connecting Valves and Transformer:
Use multi-strand, direct-burial irrigation wire with at least 0.8-1 mm diameter. Connect the common wire of all solenoids to the common wire terminal (typically green/yellow). Connect the other wire of each solenoid to a dedicated zone terminal (1, 2, 3, etc.). Use waterproof connectors for all wire splices.
Transformer Connection:
- Indoor Model: Connect the transformer's wires to the AC terminals on the controller. The transformer typically plugs into a wall outlet.
- Outdoor Model: The transformer is housed within the controller. Connect the 230V AC mains supply to the designated terminals, ensuring proper strain relief and moisture protection (e.g., using a cable gland).
Master Valve/Pump Relay Connection:
Connect the master valve or pump relay solenoid wires to the 'P/MV' terminal and the 'Common' terminal. Ensure the relay or valve does not exceed the controller's current rating (0.28 Amps for the solenoid).
Rain Sensor Connection:
Connect the rain sensor wires to the 'SEN' terminals. The controller can bypass the rain sensor using the 'RAIN SENSOR' switch on the dial. If no sensor is connected and the switch is enabled, watering will be blocked.
Remote Control Connection (ROAM/ICR):
Requires a SmartPort® accessory. Connect the SmartPort® to the controller's REM terminal and the appropriate wires (red, white, blue) to AC1, AC2, and REM terminals respectively. Follow the SmartPort® manual for detailed instructions.
Controller Setup and Operation
The Pro-C controller allows for flexible programming using three independent programs (A, B, C), each with up to four start times per day.
Basic Setup Principles:
- Start Times: Set when watering should begin. One start time can run multiple zones sequentially.
- Run Times: Set how long each zone waters (1 minute to 6 hours).
- Watering Days: Select specific days, interval watering (e.g., every 3 days), or odd/even day watering.
Programming Steps:
- Set Time and Date: Turn the dial to 'SET TIME & DATE'. Use the +/- and Enter buttons to set the year, month, day, hour, and minute. Select AM/PM or 24-hour format.
- Set Start Times: Turn the dial to 'START TIMES'. Select program A, B, or C using the PRG button. Set the desired start time(s) using +/- and Enter. Multiple start times per program allow for different watering schedules within the same program (e.g., morning and evening).
- Set Run Times: Turn the dial to 'RUN TIMES'. Select the program (A, B, C) and zone. Use +/- buttons to set the watering duration for each zone. 'OFF' can be used to skip a zone for that program.
- Set Watering Days: Turn the dial to 'WATERING DAYS'. Select program A, B, or C. Choose between:
- Specific Days: Use +/- buttons to select days of the week (Mon-Sun).
- Interval Watering: Set the number of days between watering cycles.
- Odd/Even Days: Select watering on odd or even-numbered days of the month.
- Seasonal Adjust (Water Budget): Turn the dial to 'WATER BUDGET'. Use +/- buttons to adjust the watering duration for all zones simultaneously by a percentage (5% to 300%). This is useful for adapting to seasonal weather changes without reprogramming individual run times.
- Pump/Master Valve: Turn the dial to 'PUMP/MASTER VALVE'. Enable or disable the pump/master valve for each zone individually.
- Rain Sensor Bypass: The 'RAIN SENSOR' switch on the dial allows bypassing the rain sensor if needed.
- Manual Operation: Use the 'MANUAL START' button to run a specific zone or the entire program manually.
- Test Program: Access via the PRG button while turning the dial to 'START TIMES'. Allows testing of zones and their run times.
- Resetting the Controller: Hold PRG, press and release the reset button on the back of the unit, wait for '12:00 AM' on the display, then release PRG. This erases all programming.
Advanced Features
- Multiple Programs: Use programs A, B, and C independently for different watering needs (e.g., lawn, flower beds, shrubs).
- Sensor Override Programming: Program specific zones to ignore the rain sensor if they are in sheltered areas and still require watering after rain.
- Zone Delay: Program a delay between zone activations, useful for systems with slow-closing valves or low water pressure.
- Save/Load Programs: Save current settings to memory and load them later.
- Quick Check™ System: Built-in diagnostic tool to check wiring and solenoids for shorts or faults.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues and Solutions:
Symptom | Possible Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
No display | No power to controller. | Check power supply connections and transformer output. |
ERR on display | Electrical interference or fault. | Check SmartPort wiring, consider shielded wire if extended. Check transformer output voltage. |
P ERR on display | Fault in pump relay or master valve wiring. | Check pump relay/master valve wiring integrity. |
Zone number ERR (e.g., 2 ERR) | Faulty solenoid or wiring short for that zone. | Check wiring for shorts, replace faulty solenoid. |
NO AC on display | No mains voltage to controller. | Check transformer connection and operation. |
Sensor OFF on display | Rain sensor has stopped watering, or no sensor connected with bypass jumper removed. | Switch rain sensor to BYPASS or install jumper. Check sensor functionality and wiring. |
Watering starts repeatedly | Too many start times programmed for a program. | Review start time settings; one start time is sufficient for a program cycle. |
Zone waters continuously | Faulty valve or solenoid, or debris in valve. | Turn off controller, then main water supply. Check valve for debris or loose solenoid. |
Watering does not start at programmed time | Incorrect AM/PM setting, watering days not set, or start time assigned to wrong program. | Correct time/date settings, set watering days, ensure start time is in the correct program. |
