Introduction
Congratulations on the purchase of your Skytec SPL Amplifier. Please read these instructions thoroughly before using the unit to ensure proper and safe operation.
Safety Instructions
WARNING: Failure to follow these instructions may void your warranty. Always take safety precautions to prevent fire and/or electric shock. It is advisable to leave repairs and modifications to qualified personnel.
Hearing Protection
- Loudspeakers can generate very high sound pressure levels (SPL), potentially causing permanent hearing damage to performers, crew, and audience members. Ensure sound levels do not exceed 85 dB.
General Safety Precautions
- Always ensure the amplifier is switched OFF when connecting or disconnecting speakers.
- Do not overload the amplifier or speakers to avoid component damage.
- Never plug or unplug the unit with wet hands.
- If the plug or mains lead is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified technician.
- Connect the unit to an earthed mains outlet (220-240Vac/50Hz) protected by a 10-16A fuse.
- During thunderstorms or if the unit will not be used for extended periods, unplug it from the mains. The rule is: Unplug when not in use.
- If the unit has been stored for a long time, condensation may occur. Allow the unit to reach room temperature before switching it on. Never use the unit in humid rooms or outdoors.
- The housing becomes very hot during operation. Do not touch it during or immediately after use.
- Do not use cleaning sprays on controls; residues can cause dust and grease buildup. Seek professional advice for malfunctions.
- Do not force controls.
- Do not place open flames (e.g., candles) on or near the unit – FIRE HAZARD.
- Ensure the amplifier is placed on a stable, solid surface.
- Do not place liquids on the amplifier and protect it from humidity, which can significantly shorten its lifespan.
- If the unit is damaged to the extent that internal parts are visible, DO NOT connect it to mains power or switch it on. Contact your dealer.
- Never attempt to repair the unit yourself; it contains no user-serviceable parts. All repairs must be performed by a qualified technician.
- Set the amplifier volume to minimum before switching it on.
- Keep the unit out of reach of children.
- Switch off the unit before unplugging it from the mains or other equipment. Disconnect all leads and cables before moving the unit.
- Ensure the mains lead cannot be damaged by people walking on it. Check the mains lead for damage before each use.
Environmental Protection
- Recycle packaging materials whenever possible.
- Do not dispose of faulty units with normal household waste. Take them to a designated collection point for recycling.
Connections
Before connecting, check the amplifier's specifications to ensure compatibility with your speakers, paying attention to power rating and impedance. Ensure the amplifier is switched OFF before connecting speakers.
ATTENTION! Observe polarity (+/-). Connect wires of the same color to the same terminal on both sides (e.g., amplifier's '+' to speaker's '+'). Incorrect connections will degrade sound quality. Use only high-quality speaker cables suitable for the power and distance involved.
Front Panel Layout
The front panel of the SPL 400 features a black metal chassis with controls and indicators. From left to right: a power switch, a power indicator LED, two rotary volume controls labeled "Channel A & B", two signal indicator LEDs labeled "Signal", and two clip indicator LEDs labeled "Clip". Below these controls are the channel labels "CHANNEL A" and "CHANNEL B".
Front Panel Controls:
- Power Switch
- Power On/Off Indicator
- Channel A & B Volume Controls
- Signal LED Channel A & B
- Clip Indicator
Rear Panel Layout
The rear panel features input and output connectors, and the power connection. From left to right: A power input socket with a fuse holder, followed by two RCA input sockets labeled "INPUTS A" and "INPUTS B", and two speaker output terminals labeled "SPEAKER OUTPUTS" with corresponding positive (+) and negative (-) markings. Warning symbols (risk of electric shock, do not open) are also present.
Rear Panel Connections:
- Inputs Channel A & B (RCA phono sockets)
- Channel A & B Outputs (Speaker terminal board)
- Mains Input Power & Fuse Holder
Basic Connections Diagram Description
This diagram illustrates a typical setup. A mixer is shown connected via RCA cables to the input of the SPL 400 amplifier. The amplifier's speaker outputs are connected via speaker cables to two passive loudspeakers.
Operation
- Connect your loudspeaker system (minimum load 4 Ohms) with sufficient handling capacity to the amplifier's output terminals.
- Connect the output from a mixer or other suitable signal source to the appropriate input sockets of the power amplifier.
- Connect the power cord to the mains.
- Turn the gain controls to minimum, then switch on the amplifier.
- Adjust the volume controls to the desired level. NOTE: If the audio input signal is too high, distortion will occur, and the CLIP indicator will light. If the CLIP LED is constantly lit or flashing, reduce the input level.
For reliable and trouble-free operation, observe the following:
- Ensure all input/output connections are correct and secure.
- The handling capacity of the loudspeakers must be adequate for the amplifier's output.
- Always site the amplifier in a well-ventilated location.
- Protect the unit from severe shocks.
- Do not plug or unplug speakers during amplifier operation, as this can seriously damage the amplifier.
