Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G Interchangeable Lens
Model: SEL40F25G
Mount: E-mount
Introduction
This manual explains how to use the lens. For common precautions and notes on use, refer to the separate document titled "Precautions before using." Ensure both documents are read before using the lens.
This lens is designed exclusively for Sony α camera system E-mount cameras and is not compatible with A-mount cameras. The FE 40mm F2.5 G is compatible with the range of a 35mm format image sensor. Cameras equipped with a 35mm format image sensor can be set to shoot in APS-C size; consult your camera's instruction manual for details on setting this up. For compatibility information, visit the Sony website for your region or consult a Sony dealer or authorized service facility.
Notes on Use
- Do not point the lens at the sun or a bright light source. This can cause internal malfunction of the camera body and lens, smoke, or fire due to light focusing. If the lens must be exposed to sunlight, attach the lens caps.
- When shooting against the sun, keep the sun completely out of the angle of view. Solar rays can concentrate inside the camera, causing smoke or fire. Even keeping the sun slightly out of view can pose this risk.
- When carrying a camera with the lens attached, always hold both the camera and the lens firmly.
- This lens is designed with dust-proofness and splash-proofness in mind but is not waterproof. Avoid exposing it to water, especially in rain.
- A rattling sound when shaking the lens alone or the camera with the lens attached (while the camera is off) is normal and does not indicate a malfunction. Movement of internal lens groups during transport also does not affect performance.
Precautions on Using a Flash
- When using a flash, always remove the lens hood and shoot from at least 1 meter (3.3 feet) away from the subject.
- With certain lens and flash combinations, the lens may partially block the flash light, creating a shadow at the bottom of the picture. Adjust the shooting distance in such cases.
Vignetting
When the lens is used, the corners of the screen may appear darker than the center. This phenomenon, known as vignetting, can be reduced by closing the aperture by 1 to 2 stops.
Identifying the Parts
The lens has the following parts:
- Lens hood index
- Focusing ring
- Aperture ring
- Aperture scale
- Aperture index
- Mounting index
- Focus mode switch
- Focus hold button
- Lens hood
- Aperture click switch
- Lens contacts* (Do not touch)
- Lens mount rubber ring
Attaching and Detaching the Lens
To attach the lens:
- Remove the rear lens cap and the camera body cap.
- Align the white index on the lens barrel with the white index on the camera (mounting index). Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it locks. (Note: Do not press the camera's lens release button when mounting. Do not mount the lens at an angle.)
- Remove the front lens cap. (The front lens cap can be attached/detached in two ways, indicated as (1) and (2) in diagrams.)
To detach the lens:
- Attach the front lens cap.
- While holding down the camera's lens release button, rotate the lens counterclockwise until it stops, then detach the lens.
Attaching the Lens Hood
Using a lens hood is recommended to reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality.
Align the red line on the lens hood with the red line on the lens (lens hood index). Insert the lens hood into the lens mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place, ensuring the red dot on the hood aligns with the red line on the lens.
- Rotate the lens hood until it clicks to secure it and prevent disengagement.
- When using the camera's built-in or an external flash (sold separately), remove the lens hood to avoid blocking the flash light.
- When the lens hood is attached, the front lens cap should be placed over the lens hood.
- Filters can be attached over the lens hood. Depending on the filter type, it may also be possible to attach the hood after mounting a filter directly onto the lens.
Focusing
The focus mode switch on this lens may not function with certain camera models. Consult the Sony website or a dealer for compatibility information.
To switch between AF (Auto Focus) and MF (Manual Focus):
The focus mode can be switched on the lens itself. For AF photography, both the camera and lens should be set to AF. For MF photography, either or both the camera and lens should be set to MF.
To set the focus mode on the lens:
Slide the focus mode switch to the desired mode, AF or MF (illustrated as (1)). Refer to your camera's manual for camera-specific focus mode settings.
In MF mode, turn the focusing ring to adjust focus (illustrated as (2)) while viewing through the viewfinder.
Using a camera equipped with an AF/MF control button:
- Pressing the AF/MF control button during AF operation temporarily switches to MF.
- Pressing the AF/MF control button during MF operation temporarily switches to AF, provided the lens is set to AF and the camera to MF.
Using the Focus Hold Buttons
The focus hold button on this lens may not function with certain camera models. Consult the Sony website or a dealer for compatibility information.
Pressing the focus hold button during AF operation cancels AF, fixing the focus. The shutter can then be released with the focus held. Releasing the focus hold button while pressing the shutter button halfway restarts AF.
Adjusting the Exposure
When the "A" setting on the aperture scale is aligned with the aperture index, the camera controls the exposure. The amount of light can be manually adjusted between f/2.5 and f/22 by rotating the aperture ring.
Manual adjustment of light amount:
Rotate the aperture ring to the desired exposure (f-stop) when the camera is set to M (Manual) or A (Aperture Priority) mode.
Notes:
- When shooting movies, set the aperture click switch to "OFF" (as shown in illustration -a).
- Setting the aperture click switch to "OFF" reduces the sound of the aperture ring, which is beneficial for movie recording.
- If the aperture is changed while recording a movie with the aperture click switch set to "ON," the sound of the aperture ring will be recorded.
