Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM Interchangeable Lens Operating Instructions
Introduction
This document provides operating instructions for the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM interchangeable lens. It explains how to use the lens, including attachment, detachment, zoom, focusing, and lens hood usage. For common precautions and notes on use, please refer to the separate document titled "Precautions before using".
This lens is designed exclusively for E-mount cameras and cannot be used with A-mount cameras. It is compatible with the range of a 35mm format image sensor, and can also be set to shoot at APS-C size on compatible cameras. For camera setting details, consult your camera's operating instructions. For compatibility information, visit the Sony support website or consult your dealer.
Notes on Use
- When carrying a camera with the lens attached, always firmly hold both the camera and the lens.
- Do not hold by the part of the lens that protrudes when zooming.
- This lens is designed with dust-proofness and splash-proofness in mind, but it is not waterproof. Avoid water drops when using in the rain.
Precautions on Using a Flash
When using a flash, remove the lens hood and shoot at least 1 meter (3.3 feet) away from your subject. Certain lens and flash combinations may cause the lens to block the flash light, resulting in a shadow at the bottom of the picture.
Vignetting
When the lens is used, the corners of the screen may become darker than the center. To reduce this phenomenon (vignetting), close the aperture by 1 to 2 stops.

Attaching and Detaching the Lens
To attach the lens:
- Remove the front and rear lens caps and the camera body cap. The front lens cap can be attached/detached in two ways: (1) and (2). Method (2) is convenient for attaching/detaching the lens cap with the lens hood attached.
- Align the white index on the lens barrel with the white index on the camera (mounting index). Insert the lens into the camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it locks. Do not press the camera's lens release button when mounting. Do not mount the lens at an angle.
To remove the lens:
- While holding down the lens release button on the camera, rotate the lens counterclockwise until it stops, then detach the lens.
Attaching the Lens Hood
Using a lens hood is recommended to reduce flare and ensure maximum image quality.
- Align the red line on the lens hood with the red line on the lens (lens hood index). Insert the lens hood into the lens mount and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place and the red dot on the lens hood aligns with the red line on the lens.
Note: If the lens hood is not rotated until it clicks, its shadow may appear in recorded images. When using a built-in or external flash, remove the lens hood to avoid blocking the flash light. For storage, fit the lens hood onto the lens backwards.
To remove the lens hood:
- While holding down the hood release button on the lens hood, rotate the lens hood counterclockwise.
Zooming
Rotate the zooming ring to the desired focal length.
Zoom Lock Switch
This switch prevents the lens barrel from extending due to the weight of the lens during transport. Before setting the switch, fully return the lens to the W (wide) position. Slide the switch in the direction to lock the zoom. Slide it back to unlock.
Focusing
Switching between AF (Auto Focus) and MF (Manual Focus):
The focus mode can be switched between AF and MF on the lens. For AF photography, both the camera and lens should be set to AF. For MF photography, either or both should be set to MF.
- To set the focus mode on the lens: Slide the focus mode switch to AF or MF. Refer to your camera's manual for camera settings.
- In MF: Turn the focusing ring while looking through the viewfinder to adjust focus.
Using a camera with an AF/MF Control Button:
- Pressing the AF/MF control button during AF operation temporarily switches to MF.
- Pressing the AF/MF control button during MF operation temporarily switches to AF if the lens is set to AF and the camera to MF.
Using the Focus Hold Buttons:
Pressing the focus hold button during AF operation stops the AF drive, fixing the focus. You can then release the shutter with the focus held. Releasing the focus hold button while pressing the shutter button halfway restarts AF.
Note: The focus hold button may not function with some camera models. Consult the Sony support website for compatibility information.
