Pigeon Nursing Bottle for Cleft Lip/Palate Baby
This guide provides instructions for using the Pigeon nursing bottle, specifically designed for babies with cleft lip and palate. Please read carefully before use and follow the guidance of a medical professional or nurse.
About the Pigeon Specialty Bottle
Pigeon has developed a specialized nipple and bottle for babies with cleft lip and palate. It can be used with formula or expressed breast milk. Once your baby can suckle proficiently, try switching to the standard Pigeon nursing bottle.
Nipple Features
Standard and Wide-Neck Nipples
The standard nipple (marked with 'R') has a larger nipple head compared to standard nipples. This design helps prevent air or milk from leaking through the cleft in babies with cleft lip and palate. Additionally, for babies with weaker sucking strength, the slightly larger nipple opening allows more milk to flow compared to a standard flow nipple, facilitating smooth milk delivery.
The small-neck nipple head is smaller than the standard nipple head, and the milk flow is also less.
If the nipple used is not suitable for your baby, it may lead to them receiving an inadequate amount of milk (too much or too little), or even cause choking or difficulty in sucking. Therefore, please choose between the two nipple sizes based on your baby's condition and progress.
Part Names and Functions
Nipple Opening
The standard nipple opening is a slightly larger Y-cut hole, allowing milk to flow smoothly even with weak sucking. The small-neck nipple opening is a Y-cut hole, slightly smaller than the standard nipple opening. If the milk flow from the standard nipple is too much, switch to the small-neck nipple.
Nipple
You can choose from two sizes of silicone nipples to suit your baby's condition.
The markings on the bottle are for preparing formula. For more precise measurements, use a measuring cup or spoon.
Assembly Instructions
- Clean your fingers with a sterile cotton pad.
- Insert the nipple into the cap.
- Align the flatter side of the anti-backflow valve (the side with the Pigeon logo) with the nipple opening and insert it into the nipple.
If the anti-backflow valve is difficult to install, wetting it with water will help.
Nipple Opening Shape
Standard Neck: Y-cut (Standard)
Small Neck: Y-cut (Small)
Bottle Capacity: 240ml (Maximum scale capacity)
Use the Small-Neck Nipple in these situations:
- For babies with cleft lip and palate who are lighter in weight.
- When the oral cavity becomes smaller due to the use of a Hink-type lid.
- As a transition period after cleft lip surgery, before using a normal nipple.
Air Vent
Prevents the nipple from collapsing during sucking, allowing for smooth milk flow.
Anti-Backflow Valve
Installed inside the nipple, it prevents milk from flowing back into the bottle during sucking. Milk flows when the baby's tongue presses the nipple. Even babies with weak sucking strength can smoothly draw milk.
Bottle Body
The bottle body is soft and easy to squeeze. Simply press the bottle body lightly to allow milk to flow out. When the baby's sucking strength is weak or their tongue does not have enough strength to press the nipple, you can assist the baby by squeezing the bottle body to let the milk flow out.
Preparation Flow
Formula Preparation
- Carefully review the instructions on the formula packaging for preparing the formula.
- Use water that has been boiled and cooled to above 70°C for preparing the formula. Do not use water that has been standing for more than 30 minutes after boiling or has cooled below 70°C.
- In cold weather, the bottle will become cold. If you add water below 70°C to prepare the formula, the temperature of the hot water will drop further. Before preparing the formula, warm the bottle with warm water, discard the water, and then add water at 70°C.
- The preparation instructions may vary depending on the formula manufacturer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for preparing the formula.
Assembling and Feeding
- Attach the nipple to the bottle. To prevent burns, hold the bottle with a clean cotton towel or oven mitt and shake the bottle to mix the contents thoroughly.
- If you shake the bottle up and down, the contents may splash out suddenly and cause burns.
- If you shake the bottle up and down after attaching the nipple, the hot water can increase the pressure inside the bottle, potentially causing the contents to leak or splash out suddenly.
- After preparing the formula, attach the nipple and place the bottle in a bowl filled with water or under running tap water to cool the contents to a suitable feeding temperature.
- Place the bottom of the bottle under the faucet to ensure the nipple does not come into contact with tap water.
- If you shake the bottle up and down after attaching the bottle cap, the hot water can increase the pressure inside the bottle, potentially causing the contents to leak or splash out suddenly.
- The nipple opening is a Y-cut, so milk will not leak even if the bottle is tipped over. Cool thoroughly and check the surface temperature of the bottle.
- Do not use a microwave oven to heat water for formula or to heat the prepared formula.
- Do not prepare the formula near your baby, as it can be dangerous.
When to Replace the Nipple
If your baby becomes accustomed to a specific nipple, they may resist a new one. Try alternating between two or more nipples. To prevent accidents caused by nipple aging, replace the nipple as soon as you notice any defects, such as stretching, regardless of the number of uses.
If the nipple surface becomes sticky or the nipple head starts to protrude, it indicates that the rubber quality has deteriorated. Do not continue to use the nipple.
Nipple Replacement Schedule:
- Total boiling sterilization time: 24 hours.
- Total steam sterilization time: 20 hours.
Discard the nipple immediately if you notice any signs of damage (including cracks, tears, deterioration, or if it has been more than two months since the first use), regardless of the total sterilization time or number of uses.
Accumulated time does not include heating or cooling time.

Nipple with Air Vent - Gentle Squeeze
The bottle body is soft and easy to squeeze. By gently squeezing the bottle body, you can control the milk flow. This is especially helpful for babies with weak sucking strength or when the baby's tongue does not press the nipple sufficiently. The thicker side of the nipple, which has the air vent, is designed to align with the baby's palate, facilitating easier milk intake.
Important Notes
- After use, thoroughly wash the bottle and nipple with a sponge and sterilize them.
- Do not expose the nipple to direct sunlight or high heat. Do not exceed the recommended sterilization time, as it may weaken the nipple.
- Use a sponge to clean; using a hard brush may cause damage.
- This bottle and nipple cannot be used with other products.
Bottle Body
- This bottle and nipple cannot be used with other products.
- The upper part of the bottle body is soft and easy to squeeze, allowing you to easily adjust the squeezing pressure.
- If you squeeze the bottle body too hard, a large amount of milk may flow out of the nipple, potentially causing the baby to choke. Therefore, control your squeezing pressure to prevent choking accidents.
- Before feeding, cool the milk to body temperature.
- Hold the baby in your arms while feeding.
- During feeding, ensure the air vent is not covered.
- Feed the baby as soon as the formula is prepared. Discard any unfinished formula within 2 hours.
